If you had the choice to pick a team of 20 year olds, or a team of 30 plus in the NHL this year, who would you take?

The criteria is that there will be a seven game series played this year.....Salaries and future contracts have nothing to do with it...

Under 30 vs over 30....Who would you pick?

Here is my starting lineup for the greybeards

Forwards Jerome Iginla
Mats Sundin
Jaromir Jagr

Defence Chris Pronger
Niklas Lidstrom

Goalie Marty Brodeur

Ill take that 6 against any team of young pups you can think of...The interesting part would be when you go deeper to fill the roster..

Ill take my boys
runthemover
Brad, Sidney, Alex

Dion, Brian C.

WRONG...the under 30s have no shot actually in my scenario..ITs a seven game playoff type series...

I am pitching the idea to Bettman , not holding my breath though

lol, it's an opinion.

fair enough...Since after all you are under 30...

8 of the top 17 scorers in the NHL over 30

8 of the top 10 dman in the NHL over 30(one is very close )

9 of the top 14 goalies in the NHL over 30

My 2 teams would be

<30s

Luongo

Phaneuf Campbell

Kovalchuk Crosby Ovechkin

vs

Kovalev Sakic Alfredsson

Neidermeyer Lidstrom

Brodeur

>30s

I'd take the <30s to win. Just.
Zach6668
So if we're doing a 7 game series, you need depth.

There may be some amazing 30+ players, there are way more under 30, imho.

My under 30 team, off the top of my head:

Ovechkin - Crosby - Spezza
Zetterberg - Malkin - Getzlaf
Kovalchuk - Datsyuk - Kopitar
Heatley - Lecavalier - Thornton

Extras: M. Richards, E. Staal, Ribeiro

Phaneuf - A. Markov
Campbell - Keith
Letang - Komisarek

Extra: M. Green

Lundqvist - Luongo - Miller

I probably missed some players. I also tried to set the lines with guys who'll play well off of each other, like a playmaker with a sniper, and maybe a bit of a physical presence as well.

I'd like to see your counter with 30+ players. I agree the 30+ defense core is probably stronger, but I don't think they'd win a 7-game series against this offense.

I just think its interesting..and the experience factor , and especially the goaltending and defence might be the difference..

Its fun though do match up

I don't see how you can leave a conn smythe trophy winner off the active roster let alone not even on the roster at all!

Brad Richards?

You're probably right. I don't know much about him, but he should probably be a starter.

over kopitar definitely

Yeah, I didn't put too much effort into it, I just looked at the leading scorers, and went with what I saw, just to demonstrate the depth of the team. Forgetting Brad Richards just goes to show how deep a <30 team would be.

lol @ zach putting letang in the under 30 d core over guys like Weber, Johnson, Martin, Burns, Enstrom, Roszival. Man crush if ever i saw one!!

lol yup biggrin.gif

he's up there with matt damon.

Again though, I just kinda tried to match an offensive d-man with a defensive d-man, and without much thought, just pulled from the stats list, and my own bias. smile.gif

I don't know much about the young defense, especially in the west, and especially if they're not tearing it up offensively.

Fwiw, I think Letang will be very good, but obviously it's premature, as he's just in his first year, and he started in the minors. Imo, if he's good enough to be the captain of team canada in the WJC, than he's good enough for me.

I will post a 25 man roster later...If someone has an xbox game with NHL and would like to simulate it , it would be fun

I would LOVE to see a team like this play together. I'd throw out Ribeiro however and throw in Jonathon Toews. He might be young but he's proven that he can make ANY veteran look foolish. Quick and just so talented as well. Other than that I LOVE it.

Oh God... Toews didn't even cross my mind... The depth of the <30s is too much for the >30s, imho.

Mine too. Stupid red ring of death. My NHL08 is sitting there collecting dust. I'll do the roster simulation when I get my xbox back though. Ahhhh feels good to be a recent graduate with ALL the time in the world.

Exactly. The under 30 team could have 2 competitive teams. There's just SO many young players that are so good.

Most of the scoring leaders are in the under 30's category.

Gaborik
Iggy icon_dance.gif
Sedin Twins
Hemsky
Hossa
Parise
Kane

The list honestly goes on. So many young solid players. Too many to choose from.

And no one has mentioned the now alone in 11th overall in scoring Marc Savard for their team.

I forgot but I wanted to mention an assist Savard had a few games ago. He raced down the ice and wiped out an icing and took a hit to make the play. Respect for that one!

It becomes so hard to vote for no-touch icing when you see hard working plays like that.

I know, I want him on the over 30's.
Especially in a 7 game series, I'd like someone who's in their earlier 30s over someone in their late 30s

well considering only serge listed an over 30 team, it's not like everyone has overlooked him
