Membership at my school gym opened April 30th but I was out of town for a couple days. Then my goal was to go sign up today and get a work out in. I have a few things I've been putting off today to finish up and then I 'm free to go. So I guess later tonight I will have officially joined a gym smile.gif

I think I'll bike there too, it'll be my warm up.

I said I wanted to lose 15 more Lbs.. I didn't say 150 smile.gif So yes for all intents and purposes I am "normal" but I am definately heavier than my comfort zone.

I was 255 Lbs 5 years ago.. just sayin

Ran 4.0 miles last night. I won't be doing much for the next few days due to being out of town. Most likely back in the gym on Sunday.

week one of P90x was done the other day first time on the boards since then and it was torture yet fulfilling droped 9.5 lbs...yay me
Smacciemac
Last week after joining the gym I went 4 times. I did 2 miles on the treadmill in fat burning mode and then did a full body work out on the Life fitness machines with doing 2 extra sets on my Abs, Glutes and triceps. I was feeling a bit sore, however probably not as sore as I expected and probably not as sore as I should have been.

The personal trainer finally called me and left me a voicemail to set up my appointment. I am sure I am on the right track, but it probably needs to be adjusted etc.. So I should hopefully have a good routine in place after my session with him. I lost another pound which is good smile.gif

I'll be back at the gym tonight. I intended to go last night after I got back in town but, well, I'm lazy. Also, our softball season starts tonight. Not that it's much of a workout, but it'll be nice to get outside and do something at least moderately active.

Go ahead and FMP, dolfan...

Back on the soccer field tonite and Wednesday. I've taken to doing the laps with the team, trying to stay active.

So I failed at my last attempt but started up again last Monday. Main issue is that the weather has been killing my sinus' and there is nothing worse to me than working out with a bordering on a migraine headache.

I tried running but it didn't go well two weeks ago. When I run on the treadmill I am never that sore the next day but I ran about half my distance around my subdivision and I could barely walk for three days. I guess I can't take the pavement. So I am back on the treadmill and/or bike.

Right now I am doing 30 minutes either on the bike at 15mph average set at 125 watts or doing the cross country setting on the treadmill (0-9 incline for 30 minutes) at 3.5.

Then just doing my rounds on the machines. Once I buy a workout bench and some weights I will start on the workout I was sent.

I stopped working out around the holidays and I was 174. I started up I think again in March and I still only weighed 174 but I stopped after two weeks and started up last monday at the gym and I weighed 179. Also took measurements of my waist/gut, bicepts, thighs, pecs. I only plan to measure once a month. Curious to see what happens. Don't have the figures at work but my gut, measured at the bellybutton to get full circumference was 40". I want to get down to 34", which is my waist size.

I was barely able to finish my normal cardio, and had trouble finishing my normal reps all week. On Thursday I went to the doctor when my throat got very swollen and it turned out I had strep throat. I am going back to the gym today after taking the rest of last week off. I was on the 4th week (of part 1) of that 4 part, 4 month plan that was going around. I think I will start the 4th week over and then go from there.

I hope everyone else is sticking to it.

I have a random, quick question. When does everyone time their meals? I usually just eat when I want to, but I know that is obviously not the best idea. Obviously eating some carbs 30 minutes before a workout is a good plan, but does anyone have any more advice? Is eating meat (or anything high in protein) 30-60 minutes after a workout a good idea? I am trying to burn a bit more fat, then just develop some muscle, if that changes anything.

I just read something in Men's Health (thanks Fryer) that you shouldn't eat carbs before a workout, because then the body just burns that. If you want to burn fat, you should go higher protein, lower carb.

Great mag, eh?

One of these days, I'll join the gym. Not sure if I posted this in here or not, but a buddy of mine and I were planning to go join together (they have a deal going if 2+ join together), but he had an accident at work a few weeks ago and cut the tip ("just the tip, just for a second, just to see how it feels") of his middle finger off. Well, he said next week he'll be back doing physical activity, so next week is the goal.

I am pretty sure that you want to have your protein intake after a workout. Like if you drink protein shakes or whatever you should do it afterwards and not before.

I've been playing a lot of basketball lately - doing some weights and running, but mostly basketball.

I went with my personal trainer last night. He was very nice. It turned out that this session was basically an evaluation. We learned the I have basically 0 flexibility and am only 2 points over the “unhealthy” classification of body fat percentage.. At least I wasn’t IN unhealthy..

We didn’t do an actual workout. He had me do some different tests and work on some machines to evaluate just where I am in fitness level.

I will be meeting with him for my 2nd free session next Tuesday. He will have a workout put together for me and we will do the actual 45min to 1 hour workout in full.

Then of course he is going to hit me up for more sessions that I would have to pay for tongue.gif

PS: Another pound lost as of this morning too smile.gif

How did it go?

I went in and He had a plan to work on my trouble spots that I told him I wanted to work on during my evaluation. I told him I needed help on my legs, butt, arms and Abs.. (Ok yea so my whole body!)

So he said that last night we would work my butt, legs and arms. I have NO muscle.. let me just start out by saying that. Especially ever since I had the gastric bypass and went into starvation from being so sick, my body basically ate up every muscle I had and I have never been the same since.

So he had me doing 3 sets of 12 reps on each of the 4 leg machines and squat machine. I was really struggling to complete the 3rd sets. I thought I was going to die but got through them with no complaint and he said I did very well..

Once we were done with legs and butt, he stuck me on the eliptical machine for 5 minutes to loosen my leg muscles so that the didn't cramp up on me as we were working arms.

We got to the kenesis arm machine where I did my 3 sets.. then we moved onto another machine.. by this time I was so horribly nauscious that halfway through the set I thought I was going to toss my cookies all over the gym so I had to stop. He had me sit down and be finished for the day. We were going hardcore for a good 45 minutes straight by this time.

I actually did buy 4 more sessions with him so that we can continue my upper body and move to abs. In the meantime he said the cardio and the circuit that I have been doing on my own is perfect except that I need to add more weight to the circuit so that it makes me struggle more during my 2nd set. He said I should only train heavily like I did yesterday 2x's a week and do what I have been doing in between.

All in all I am not in pain today but I can feel it coming on slowly now.. however my legs are so tight they feel like rubber still and keep shaking on me still since yesterday. I can't squat down because I feel like they are going to collapse.. Is this what it is supposed to feel like after a major work out? I mean honestly I feel like I have parkinson's in my legs and that I would really benefit from a cane right about now.

My butt muscles are sore.. but I am so happy that they are.. that means the squatting machine worked exactly where it should have. smile.gif

Nice work, keep up with it.

Even though you're with a trainer I would make sure you avoid overdoing your early workouts. It was probably a good idea that he stopped you. I think a lot of people have that problem of when they first start out they're so fired up about getting in shape that they burn themselves out right away. I like to ease into it before I really do anything intense. Look at it as a long term thing. With your muscles, you'll really have to give them a chance to get used to the stress again.

As for your pain, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that if you keep it up, it shouldn't be as bad as it is right now because your muscles will become more accustomed to the activity. The bad news is that if you really work at changing your workouts up and trying new exercises, etc....there will always be a bit of soreness to deal with.

Yeah.. he said the same thing. He said he likes to see people do the circuit for a good month before starting intense training too to get accustomed to it.

As for the pain.. I'm fine with soreness. I don't mind it and it lets me know that what I did worked. It is the parkinson's I can do without lol

So I came to the conclusion that I am actually hurt.

It has been 2 days now and I am in horrible pain. I can not squat. I can not go to a sitting or standing position without severe pain. I was like an invalid for the past 2 days trying to get to and from my 3rd floor apartment. I am holding on for dear life to the railing and going up and down sideways. Even stepping off and on the curb crossing the street is really painful..

I think the trainer thought I was in better shape than I actually am.

I am honestly not being a baby. I expected soreness.. a lot of it. This is not soreness, I think he had me totally overdo it and hurt myself. This is very bad pain, spasms in my thighs while walking, I am limping etc.. I have no doubt that I am honestly hurt.

I think I am going to put anymore personal training sessions off for a good month or so. I will continue to do my cardio, work the circuit, work the machines he showed me but not to the point he made me do it and then maybe give training another shot. I went from TOTAL couch potato to gym membership only in the past 2 weeks. My body was not ready for this. It was way too much too soon..

I think the horrible nausea was my body screaming for me to stop because I overdid it. If I am home and in pain for several days and not able to bend my legs, I can’t go to the gym. Not going to the gym means not burning calories. Not burning calories means no weight loss.. so it totally defeats my purpose.

I went out for a walk yesterday to try to loosen up the muscles. I walked about a mile. It really didn’t help and it was the longest mile ever..

I am glad I didn’t finish the workout due to nausa.. I’d be an invalid in my upper body as well..

I’d be an invalid in my upper body as well..

if it's in the muscles, super sore and super tight, it's likely not an injury, but severe overdoing it. Take a couple days more and you should start to loosen up. Don't necessarily give up the personal trainer completely. Be sure, however, to explain to the trainer just how severe the cramping/pain was.
