What kind of time are you getting on your miles now? I have been averaging 10:30 while running 2.5 - 4 miles and my best to date was 9:59 average over 5K. I too am trying to get down to an 8 minute mile. I did some speedwork on my sunday run for the last mile and it blows my mind that guys can keep such a grueling pace (in my mind) for an entire marathon. Mind you at my fastes I was probably averaging a 7 minute mile, but I really don't know as it is mainly guesswork when I am out there. I do all outside running.

It's funny but I started running on the treadmill and only started running outside because the weather was so nice and quickly
fell in love with it. I started looking at alot of the running websites and stuff to help out. I'm pretty much where you are at a little over 10 minute miles and I never ran track when I was younger so I've never really ran distances before so this is all new. It does blow my mind also thinking of guys doing 6 minute miles for 25 fu
cking miles!
I'm still a little unsure of what exact training I'm going to do when I start back later in the week. I was pretty much just running 3 miles a day and an occasional longer run. I think I am going to do some speed work, a decent run at a good pace, and then a day with just a relaxing run and see how it goes.
I was also thinking of LFH talking to his dad and it reminded me of something I read. People actually peak as runners when we are 27 years old and then it starts tailing off. The good news is that later in life we actually have a second time that we peak. You're probably wondering, 40? 45? 50? Nope, 64! I couldn't believe it until I started looking at results of all the local runs and the peoples times. It's amazing how many older people kick ass, lol.
So anyone, loveforhockey tell your dad he's got 5 years to train, plenty of time before he peaks! hahaha

Yoga is a great all around workout. The times that I have gone have been great and it really works out your core. I wish that I could dedicate more time to it, but oh well.
Ran 4 miles last night averaging 10:37/mile. Lungs are feeling great, however my legs wanted to stop into the second mile. Powered through it, but wanted to ask if there are any other specific workouts that I can do in order to get more endurance from my legs. Or if I just have to keep running and eventually my legs will feel better.

I am re-joining my wife up at 24hour fitness on Saturday. We will have a better chance of getting there if we all go together with the kids. My buddy is the Sales manager so he is adding her on for only $24 bucks a month.
Another buddy of mine, who is in great shape, but has slacked it going to try and be my workout buddy at least two days a week.

working out with someone is a good way to get back into it but from my own experience, you have to be able to go yourself. Can't depend on other people in the long run. plus sometimes its hard to coordinate schedules.

So I went to Vegas for a week, ate reallly really bad and drank a lot, pretty sure I gained like 5 pounds. I still played hockey yesterday (poorly), and got back to the gym today for a leg workout. I did the best warmup I've done to date (2 miles on the crosstrainer in 15 minutes), then increased my weights on every machine even with a week off (2 weeks since I did legs). I also didn't feel like throwing up after which is a nice bonus.

It always sucks to start again after a while off but I always know that'll I'll feel more guilty for not working out than amything. Right now it's cold and nasty out and easy
to come up with an excuse not to go run especially but I feel worse if I don't do it so I just slog on ahead and make by but get in gear.
Speaking of which, ran 3 miles this morning in my Treks which I am really digging. It's almost like running barefoot and the coolest feeling when you get the hang of it. It's
like running when you were a little kid or something. Those barefoot Kenyan runners actually knew what they were doing, lol.

I have no idea how you running folks do it in the winter, I could never do that. I was thinking it's almost good enough motivation to get to the gym when it's freezing cold out, knowing that I'll work up a big sweat and be warm for an hour.

It's been a battle just figuring out the clothing, lol. After you get going it feels like it's 20 degrees warmer than it actually is.
I'll look at the tempature and almost always overdress and regret it about a mile away from my house. I'm finding that I
actually like running more when it's cold vs when it's hot though. The air seems fresher and you don't get as sweaty, lol.

benching 240 now, can only squat 185 (weakass but i try to go down as far as i can plus i havent done them for months, same with deadlifts), deadlifting 225. deadlifts just kill me, so exhausting to do them. i have to try to squat at least as much as i can bench. my new goal for next year.

So took a few weeks off for christmas and new years ... BAD IDEA! However, I did get "Born To Run" as a gift from my wife and the book is absolutely incredible and a great motivation tool to make you want to be able to run 50+ miles. I never really wanted to be able to run for 50+ miles until I read this book. Also, I am going to look into getting some of those shoes like Randy posted a few months ago. The whole barefoot phenomenon sounds like it is more than just a crackpot idea.
So when I finally decided to try to run again 3 weeks and 4 days after not running, I went and jogged / walked 3.7 miles of trails. The next day I was hurting a little so I took it easy. Then yesterday I ran an AWFUL 2 miles in 25 minutes. I am feeling better today, but it is going to take me awhile to be able to run like I want to. My goal has now transformed into wanting to do a 100 mile endurance race before I turn 40 ... I am 33 now. Should be interesting. For now I just want to get as much mileage as I can.

How old are you? Also, if it is March 15th and you are at 205 would you go on any kind of starvation type diet just to win the bet ... or is this just to get you motivated? I might be interested if it was some sort of you have to eat healthy and workout to get the weight loss. Of course if you are still in your early 20's I will probably not want to take this bet as your metabolism alone will get you down to this weight if you get on a regular workout program.
One other question: If you weigh in at 192.1 who wins? Do you get all the way to 192.9?

I'm 6'0 and 25 years old. I weighted in at 222.4, so 192.3 or under I would win.
I would never go on a starvation diet. I'm not a wrestler or anything so I would be scared to do something like that. I'd be nervous of passing out or something.
Advantages for me is that I used to be an athlete, I can handle the workouts I think. I'm a very lazy person so doing this every day has been the challenge for me. I used to be a swimmer and had to workout every single day, and once I quit it has been hard getting back into it. I like to eat and drink, so the diet is definitely going to be tough also.
I was 175 and an athlete 3 years ago. Probably 6 months after quitting I have never been under 220, max 240.
For working out I plan to run on a treadmill and swim for cardio. I will be trying to swim as much as possible, running every other day since I get shin splints. For other stuff situps, squats, and weights (mainly low weight lots of reps with a bench press).
For eating, I will have a hard time because I love food. I don't know how much I'm going to change what I eat, but just eat a lot less in proportions. I'm also going to limit myself to drinking once a week.
I'll be tracking my weight probably once a week, if I'm not showing enough progress I might seek help in trying different exercise routines or eating different kinds of foods. But again I'm not capable of starving myself.
That's all the info I can think of.

hey u all, it's been a long time since i've posted in this thread. been lurking tho
still working out. gained some weight over the holidays, at around 206 now but also have been eating more protein and trying to bulk.
i can bench about five to six reps at 245 now, so the chest is getting stronger. trying to run less now, so that i don't lose the muscle gains, keeping the heartrate at about 115 when doing cardio. basically just a brisk walk at about 3.5 miles/hr on the treadmill.
still suck at squats. can only squat 175. however, i do go all the way down till i can no further and then back up. Full range of motion.
deadlifts are hard on my lower back so i dont' do them much. i go to a chiropractor every 2 weeks for my lower back so i kind have an excuse here. maybe i should just do a light weight and higher reps for this exercise.
Still not shredded and can't see the abs too much....... but looking ok...
anyways, glad to see some of you are still working out. later boys.

I was just talking about it with a customer. The local gym has it and i'd love to try it but for now I really don't have the time and it's not worth joining just for that. There is a local park that has it that I plan to go to this spring though.

good cross train for jiu jitsu i find
Umm, weird but the older I get the more I get a fear of heights. Not sure I could do that anymore but who knows. It doesn't look appealing, lol.

start indoor, i didn't even think about heights indoor, it gets a lot more real once you get outside, but inside its pretty mellow
plus most places you can just boulder and not even worry too much about the heights and gear if you just want to get a good workout

Good idea. This spring I'll try the outdoor park which isn't real high and go from there. I'm pretty obsessive about things so that will probably translate into eventually climbing the Himalyas, haha.

its a good habit to have, you get a great strength/weight ratio and something about your body knowing you are pulling its own weight up a rock seems to lean you up i find
i've been climbing in the himilayas, trust me, if you have height issues you will not be going there
