yeah but they only sell chicken here.

as far as proteins go, I think what dratj is getting at is not actually the isolate which is basically the quality of the protein, but how "instatized", as they call it, it is. I've got some optimum nutrition nitro core, and it's got whey isolate, whey concentrate, milk isolate, milk concentrate, and even casein in it and it mixes like a charm and tastes great. I think this is probably one of the best all around proteins out there actually, since it has fast digesting (whey isolates) and slow digesting (casein) proteins in it at the same time. best of both worlds.

and grinder, I think the reason randy was saying to use low glycemic index carbs was because most people in here are fatty fatty fat fats and don't need the extra boost in insulin. since you're a skinny girly man, you do need the boost to get as much protein absorption as possible (which is what the high glycemic carbs do).

did you get this "creatine" from the really shady guy that's always hanging out in the gym locker room?

Ya, you're probably right, but even when I was reading a book that was mostly for fat people trying to lose weight, it recommended getting a serving of complex carbs post workout, even if you're rarely/never eating them the rest of the day.

In all seriousness though, it was Maximuscle creatine. Maybe it's just a personal thing with me and won't happen to others, but just giving a heads up.

yeah, I took it for a couple months myself but I didn't notice any real personality changes myself. good possibility might have been that it actually worked too good for you or something, boosting your testosterone enough to the point of personality changes. I say do it again and get FREAKING HUGE BRO.

yeah, that's probably not a bad idea really since it'll just be going to building muscle then more than likely anyways. I just know for me, with my main goal being to lose fat, that I get so scared of eating bad stuff at any time, especially after a workout for some reason, that I'd rather not get the full effects of muscle building in exchange for a little more fat loss. hell, maybe I need to read up on it more though; I could be doing it completely wrong.

I almost tried to run on the road, but hell, just getting into my car my knees were hurting. I'd hate to get a mile away from my house and realize I couldn't walk anymore. really sucks cause I want to run. maybe I'll go join the local gym and battle the other 80 people packed into a 20 square foot room at 6 oclock for a treadmill. balls.

If I knew that answer, I'd be rich. And I'd be drinking 6-12 beers every day.

Sal's coke answer is pretty good, though.

I've been pretty lucky with this situation recently, but last night was a bit of a pain in the ass.

As much as I've run in the past three months, I have to say I'm surprised at the lack of weight-loss in my midsection. I'm not a big guy, but I definitely have a respectable beer belly going on and it seems like it's the only place on my body that stores any fat. I realize that I'm awful at doing abs/midsection exercises and could probably see some progress if I were better at keeping with them, but I figured all the running would help a little. I think I've dropped near 10 pounds since the beginning of the year (which was never really a goal) but I guess I just had more blubber built up than I thought.

3.65 miles in 30 minutes on the treadmill at an incline of 4. Adding the incline to my run kicked my ass. I definitely felt tired at the end of the run.

yeah you'd be surprised how much fat you have all around your body. I've had the same thing happen to me too. confusing as hell. and I swear to everything that is holy, that last little bit of fat that you need to lose to have an actually flat stomach is the hardest god damn thing in the world. that stuff LOVES being there.

That's really the best way to track progress, as far as I'm concerned. Who cares about body fat % or scale weight, when you can just look at yourself? It's what I do too... as long as you don't turn into one of the over obsessive freaks at bodybuilding.com, it's all good.

I was at the gym on MOnday and I walked into the locker room and there is this one guy that is stripped down to his underwear fully flexing while his friend was telling him how great his glutes looked! Oh man I almost started laughing so bad because he was really taking it seriously. I think he was a bodybuilder of some sort because I overheard him saying that he had to lose 5 lbs by next thursday or something like that.

I've read multiple sources and have had people that work at those supplementt places tell me that taking protein within 15 to 30 min post workout is essential to muscle growth and repair if you are working out a lot. i lift weights almost everyday so it's essential that I get it in. I also take protein in the morning or during the day if I have the time or remember but the post workout protein I always take. I usually workout at night, so when I'm sleeping the muscles are getting their protein in to get repaired while I'm resting.
Have you tried the isolates? they are the best.

Try a casin protein shake before bed. I heard it digests much slower and stays with you longer which would be perfect for sleep. I'd definitely keep taking your post workout whey shake but I'd suggest this.

I know it's "frowned" upon, but that's why I don't use collars when I'm benching without a squatter.

Oh, yeah, I've been doing this whole gym thing the past 2 weeks. Weights MWF, Hight Intensity Interval Cardio Tues/Thurs/Sat?

Usually in the morning, then a whey protein shake afterwards. I try to get in 6 meals a day but it's really hard with my frat having a chef. I hate the idea of not eating food I've already paid for, so I just eat his food in small portions or I eat a salad or something.

I started my warmup today at about 12:15, 12:30 rolls around and no sign of my trainer, so I just kept going. She showed up at 12:45 and apologized for being late, no biggie for me. We decided since she has another appointment at 1:30 and because she wanted to work out my legs today, and I had just done cardio, that we'd cancel today's, and workout tomorrow morning. So I did another 20 cardio on the rowing machine and called it a day.

The benches that I use at the gym I go to (Goodlife fitness) have 2 to 3 tiers of racks that you can put the bar on. The top tier is the normal spot but there's lower rungs where if you fail without a spotter you can just drop it on the lower rung. I've had to use it shamefully once but it beats having to roll it off your stomach. I'm benching 205 to 215 so I'm thinking that weight would be brutal if I had to roll it off my body.

Did you do the obligatory look around to see who was watching you after you stood up? You know you did. And here is the thing, nobody made eye contact, but at least 4 people almost saw you go down. I never help in that situation. When they fail, I'm satisfied, then I turn around and pretend I didn't see a thing.

I realize you put "frowned" in quotations, but I probably would've went with "squatter", because I don't know "why" you're benching in the "squat" rack.

Oh yeah, I almost didn't work out today. I was SOOOOOOO close to just going home, then at the last minute, changed at work, went, did my 45 minutes of cardio, 200 crunches and 12 sets of back. I am going out tonight for a bit, but fully intend to get up tomorrow at 5am to workout before work, so I can start my vacation properly after work tomorrow, not at the gym, but at happy hour. Expect a 7am, post workout post tomorrow morning.

Clearly I meant spotter. Coincidentally at my gym the benches are in the squatting stations. I once tried to take Bret Culbertson's station thinking he was done, he wasn't, and then he helped me remove the 45's on the station next to it. (Bret Culbertson used to be the place kicker for our team that went 2-9 last year)

Edit: I then blew him in the locker room.

I had the pleasure of my first fail rep (since I started working out again 2 weeks ago...thanks Gym thread). My home bench has spotters racks that are set about 1/2 inch below my chest so I can just let the bar rest on the rack and slip out from beneath the bar. Takes the worry out of trying to push one more rep.

Nice work on actually making it when you're really close to skipping it. I skipped last night because I got an unexpected invitation to a work function with free drinks and food. I'm taking off early today to hit the gym and then head out of town.

And now I'm self conscious about being a tubby bitch, so I'll probably do a bunch of crunches. Thanks, Mex.

Missed the last three days. Two days I had prior commitments, but yesterday we had our softball game and of course I misjudge a flyball and jam the hell out of my finger. It is all nice and black and blue this morning. I had planned on getting in some swimming after the game. Oh well. GG swimming for a week while this heals. That just means I will get to be on the treadmill and bike more ... which is more of what I need to work on anyways!

I'll be back in the gym saturday.

I was feeling pretty tired at the gym today, but managed to fight through it, and actually increased my weights AND reps for pretty much everything, so that was pretty sweet. After the workout we printed out my new stats, which show me down to 219 lbs from 223 on the 18th. But I'm really not sure how much to trust that since it says my body fat went from 25.9% to 29.5%. There's no way I've lost weight and gained fat. I know for sure I've gained muscle weight, so I'm pretty confused about that. My BMI was 31.1, and now 30.5 but again I don't really have much faith in this thing.

Is it just a scale that you stand on and it reads your weight and body fat? If so, those things are pretty erratic in their readings. I guess they send an electric pulse or something through your body and depending on how the signal comes back it determines your BF%. So, it will vary widely depending on how hydrated you are and things like that. I have one at home, and it will give completely different readings all the time. From what I've read the only accurate way to measure BF is with calipers.

4 lbs in a week and a half though, that's great, Keep it up.

As for me, I took 3 days off last week after getting sick. I think my body needed the rest anyway, so it wasn't the worst thing. I've now lost 40lbs since 1/5/09.

I agree, I need the routine to keep me going. Vacation time is for undoing everything I accomplish by going to the gym.

And no, Mr. Mexico, I didn't do any crunches. I think I'm going to have to ease into that part of the routine. I did 120 push ups (4 sets of 30) and usually do push ups after running, so maybe I'll start alternating between those and ab exercises as my post-run activity.

Thanks for asking, though, really. That stuff does actually help.

If you guys ever need to buy supplements us bodybuilding.com. I bought some protein powder on Wednesday and it arrived Friday. Very good service. They gave me a sample of Altered State Nitric Oxide. I don't know anything about taking nitric oxide. Does anyone have any experience with it. The warnings labels worry me a little bit. Three pills, the recommended serving, contain as much caffeine as two cups of coffee. You're not supposed to mix it with anything else containing caffeine. The side effects include flushing of the face, dizziness, and possible irregular heart beats.

Today was one of my best workouts ever. I lifted upper body for an hour and twenty minutes. I increased weights on all of my lifts and was able to finish all of my sets. I've been taking creatine for the past month and I think it is helping me.

YES. I've been praising them forever. I must be closer to one of their warehouses though because I've always gotten everything next day. one time I ordered at 8 oclock at night and got my order the next day, and the next time I ordered on friday and they had it delivered on saturday for ground shipping prices. they're awesome.

How is it powerful? Does it just give you a caffeine buzz? I usually drink 2 or 3 cups of coffee before lifting and I think that helps. Is nitric oxide something I should be looking into. I'm not too concerned with getting huge. I mostly lift as a stress reliever but I do like seeing improvements. So maybe I do like getting huge?

One of my friends is sponsored by cellucor. He is sending me free samples of M5 which is a mass gainer and some no zero which supposedly promotes lean muscle growth. I've always been a skeptic when it comes to supplements. I was fairly nervous to start taking creatine.

I sort of did a push ups/abs combo where I'd do a set of push ups immediately followed by a set of abs, rest 30 seconds, repeat. When I finished my final set I sort of laid on my floor and made strange noises and swore but was pretty satisfied that I'd done it. Again, for me, I enjoy finishing the workout and the benefits, but not the process.

Just finished a lower body and ab workout. I usually hate lifting lower body but today wasn't too bad.
4 sets of squats
8 sets of calf raises
4 sets of the hamstring machine
100 cable crunches
4 sets of obliques
100 crunches on the decline bench
100 leg raises

Walking may be hard tomorrow.

I don't know how much I buy into all that nitric oxide stuff, but when I took it, the main effect was the extra energy. you're probably getting the same effect (for a lot cheaper) from the coffee. I just meant powerful in that it was a powerful stimulant, but 3 damn cups of coffee is pretty powerful too.

I'm kinda the same way in that I really have no interest in getting any bigger than I already am, but since I for some reason like taking supplements and stuff, I keep lifting to try to get bigger. and I feel like if I stop lifting, I'll just get fat since I probably wouldn't fill the void with anything.

3.5 miles in 25 minutes tonight.
Then I did 150 push ups.
THEN I DID 200 CRUNCHES AND VARIOUS OTHER ABDOMINAL EXERCISES!
I didn't particularly enjoy it.

Today was by far the worst (best) workout I've had. A lot of lower body stuff, then core stuff at the end. There were a couple times I felt like throwing up, and I'm pretty glad it's over. My shirt was almost completely soaked with sweat, and at times I had sweat just flying all over the place, it was pretty gross, but what ya gonna do?

Nice!

I'm all about workouts being as sweaty as possible. I'm convinced I'm the stinky guy that nobody wants to be next to on the treadmills.

you are, but I never bitch about sweaty, stinky people at the gym. That's why we're there. Now, the dude that farts and vacates, he's a dick.

Congrats on the crunches.

To all, I don't take any supplements, or quite frankly, anything right now, but if I wanted to drop a bunch of weight, does anyone have any suggestions? general question, I know, but I figured I'd throw it out there. I'm looking to change some stuff up, and I saw a hydroxycut commercial. haha
