i play some micro HU but never in a tourny format. just wondering if i should stick to my guns how i usually play (decent win/loss ratio) or if there's anything else to consider with tourny action.

There is one major difference between tourney play and cash play, regardless of the format: the rising blinds in tourney play adds a whole other element of strategy to your play. You should do some reading about tourney strategy before making the switch.

Position is more important than you probably comprehend at the moment.
Every time your in the BB you should feel vunerable, every time you're on the button you should feel like king of the world, position is THAT important.

Concur on the statement that position is everything HU. I play 95%+ of my HU hands in position
As the blinds get higher relative to your stacks, you should read this article on SAGE from cardplayer which deals with low M situations HU. Especially important if you like playing turbo HU/sngs.

It's my opinion...and I believe I read it somewhere...that heads up poker is the game that gives the skilled players the biggest advantage. The luck factor is put to the minimum because you are required to play almost all your hands
