I really thought this was going to be about Vesa Toskala vs. San Jose.
I'd say in a lot of cases, the goalie in question has been traded away from the old team, and feel they have something to prove to that team, and want to show them that they made a mistake.

I think this is more complex question than it seems.... depends entirely on the goalie. If the keeper in question is the type of goalie that is calm and reflective before a game, then I would say don't start him. If he's the type that needs to get pumped up to play, then start him. Goalies who play better calm and get charged up often overplay like crazy. Marc Andre Fleury comes to mind...
The one other factor is the possibility of going to a shootout. I think there's an advantage for the shooters against a goalie they are familiar with. For a goalie to anticipate a particular action from a shooter, ESPECIALLY a shot, can be death for the goalie....
