Back in 1972 Bobby Clarke had no problem with taking out Russia's best player, Valeri Kharlamov, with a wicked slash. His opinion should come as no surprise.
Heh, I was going to make this exact same point but you beat me to it. You forgot to mention that Serge's hero John Ferguson Sr. is the one that ordered the slash, he was Team Canada's assistant coach in the Summit Series.
I definitely think comparing the Downie hit to Scott Stevens' big hits was absurd though, you never saw Stevens leaving his feet to go after someone's head they way Downie did against McAmmond. You never saw Scott Stevens crosscheck anyone in the head WAY behind the play the way Boulerice did to Ryan Kesler either. The Flyers players deserved their suspensions, there's no place in the game anymore for the dirty play and intent to injure, and the only way that point will be made is to punish the offenders appropriately.
The big hit is my favorite part of the sport of hockey, and I don't ever want to see guys stop delivering crushing shots to the body a la Brian Campbell, Scott Stevens, Dion Phaneuf, etc. I also don't want to see the finesse guys having to end their careers before they start because other guys can't make the roster without playing dirty, so it's a fine line Colin Campbell has to walk, and he walks it well from my POV. I can't even recall the last time I had a problem with one of his decisions.
