Back in 1972 Bobby Clarke had no problem with taking out Russia's best player, Valeri Kharlamov, with a wicked slash. His opinion should come as no surprise.

Heh, I was going to make this exact same point but you beat me to it. You forgot to mention that Serge's hero John Ferguson Sr. is the one that ordered the slash, he was Team Canada's assistant coach in the Summit Series.

I definitely think comparing the Downie hit to Scott Stevens' big hits was absurd though, you never saw Stevens leaving his feet to go after someone's head they way Downie did against McAmmond. You never saw Scott Stevens crosscheck anyone in the head WAY behind the play the way Boulerice did to Ryan Kesler either. The Flyers players deserved their suspensions, there's no place in the game anymore for the dirty play and intent to injure, and the only way that point will be made is to punish the offenders appropriately.

The big hit is my favorite part of the sport of hockey, and I don't ever want to see guys stop delivering crushing shots to the body a la Brian Campbell, Scott Stevens, Dion Phaneuf, etc. I also don't want to see the finesse guys having to end their careers before they start because other guys can't make the roster without playing dirty, so it's a fine line Colin Campbell has to walk, and he walks it well from my POV. I can't even recall the last time I had a problem with one of his decisions.

May he rest in peace, however a lifetime HAB is never my hero...

All players associated with that club have no place for me...

Clarke may have a point if Downie challenged Blake to a fair fight. IMO, it is still a ludicrous reason to challenge someone, but hockey fights have started for less. The reason Clarke's point is idiotic is Downie sucker punched Blake. It makes sense that Clarke would condone it. By all accounts, he was the king of the chicken shit cheap shots.

Just watched the punch on Youtube, it's pretty weak sauce. Downie needs to get himself under control or he's going to spend the rest of his career in the ECHL or Europe. He's too skilled to be such a little punk, and throwing little pussy shots like that one when the other guy (who isn't a scrapper anyway) can't fight back or defend himself isn't going to win him any respect with anyone.

If you want to be an agitator, be an agitator, but don't be a little bitch. There is a difference.

Bobby Clarke was a great hockey who was a super rat in his prime and a hell of a hockey player. Would he have been as effective in the new NHL? Probably not.

Bobby Clarke off the ice is an idiot plain and simple. The best thing the Flyers organization could do is distance themselves as far away as possible from this imbecile. He ruined the Flyers when he was the GM by bringing in big slow old players when the NHL was converting to the new faster style with no clutching and grabbing. I think the only reason he is still there is because the owner loves him.
