Full Version: When Do I Take The Big Step Up?
FCP Poker Forum > Poker Strategy Forum > Tournament Play
Doug
Well basically I play $1 sngs but I can literally destroy them. I made a $170 bankroll from $0 which has been on and off for the past year, like I don't play at university but now I'm back for Christmas I feel refreshed and at the top of my game.
On stars they offer something like
$1 sngs - which I currently 6 table
$3.40 sngs - some of which are turbo NLHE some of which are razz, horse, stud - I can also play these games profitably
$5 sngs - When to step up to these? I would prefer something like perhaps a $3 NLHE sng which isnt a turbo but stars doesn't offer this and I can't be bothered to change sites, I want my 500 fpp pokerstars t-shirt!

So basically advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

I think playing recreationally the $3.40s are a good idea, and they will build your knowledge base for the other games as well which can only help your development.

There's no problem to playing some $5 sngs mixed in with the $3 sngs with your bankroll. If you keep it at about a 3:1 ratio of $3 games to $5 games you should be fine.

Once you get to 200$ and you think you have the micro stakes under control i'd advice you to try the 4.40s. They're really really soft and i still love to play them when i have time.

3.40 turbos are really soft and from my experience fun to play in. I reccomend those.

With 170, I'd throw in some 16turbo sngs on stars. The skill level is not much higher then the lower levels, but the payouts are. Once you start doing well in those, you can keep moving up. It seems though that you are nitty, and if that how you remain comfortable playing, then all the power to ya.

I think you summed me up quite well smile.gif Basically whenever i've tried to move up I've started to run bad and that looks like a big loss from what im usually compared to so yeah. I may try the 3.40 turbos, certainly not the 16's yet lol.

The turbos on Party are probably about as easy as the 2.25s on Tilt. Thats how I am building my BR right now. I would suggest playing the 3.40s consistently and throw in the some 5 dollar ones here and there.

Yep, I'll keep you updated with whats going on. So far not good, I've found it easy to play them which is good. Just took a one outer 59xx5 flop, me 99 him 55. Lovely smile.gif I think overshoving is the way to go in turbos. It went something like this, Donk raises to 80 (at level one) I shove him with AKs and he calls with JQ. They're that easy wink.gif

Let your BR size determine when you move up. As others have said, the skill level does not go up exponentially when you move up in stakes. I have seen some people say 20bi for SNG's but I am a little more conservative than that. I do agree that throwing in a higher one (like the 16 on stars) would be good for you. Obv you are profitable at the games you play now, so why not take a shot every now and then? I play mostly the 2.25 and 5.50's on FT, but I will occasionally throw in a $10 18 man. It doesn't take a huge chunk out of my BR, and the winnings will give the BR a nice boost.
