You're so wrong.

You're going to hell.

Bob Stoops, God to the rest of you heathens, will make sure of it.

I don't get either cheer which is kind of why I made the poll.

While were at it could fans of the respective teams post the origins of these proud school traditions.
showstopper24
OH IO. That cheer kicks butt. It is pretty much the only thing that connects Ohioans with each other.
fitzinabox
i haven't even heard the Boomer Soooner one but then again i rarely watch Sooner football. Why are there only 2 choices? That annoying gator chomp thing deserves to be up there, that is way worse than OH-IO imo.

The Song

The Chant

The history (from SoonerSports.com):

One of the most recognizable college fight songs in the country, 'Boomer Sooner' immediately evokes enthusiasm from OU fans and sends chills down the spines of those who dare to oppose them.

In 1905, Arthur M. Alden, a student in history and physiology whose father was a Norman jeweler, wrote the lyrics to the fight song, borrowing the tune from Yale University's 'Boola Boola' but improvising the words. A year later, an addition was made to it from North Carolina's 'I'm a Tarheel Born' and the two combined to form the university's fight song today. Though the tune was first made known by Yale, the everlasting success of Sooner squads has taken the melody of 'Boomer Sooner' to national popularity.

Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner
Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner
Boomer Sooner, Boomer Sooner
Boomer Sooner, OK U!
Oklahoma, Oklahoma
Oklahoma, Oklahoma
Oklahoma, Oklahoma
Oklahoma, OK U!
I'm a Sooner born and Sooner bred
and when I die, I'll be Sooner dead
Rah Oklahoma, Rah Oklahoma
Rah Oklahoma, OK U!

And if you are an OU fan and don't know what a Boomer or a Sooner are, then you better have these or it's gonna be a long life:

Just because they are both "OSU", and I find their chants equally bad. The gator chomp at least makes since, because you know cause the mascot is an alligator.

OU is different from OSU which is better than the buckin' fuckeyes.

And the OU chant makes sense because the team is the Sooners, duh.

I realize you're probably behind on the rich white guy hobbies, you know being black and all, but you should look it up sometime. tongue.gif

Sooners was a derogatory (at first) term for those who illegally staked a claim in the land rush of the Oklahoma Territory before the official opening.

Boomers are people who migrate to a town or area that is growing from a sudden increase in prosperity (ie, a boom) like the land rush or the oil boom of Oklahoma.

I believe that's the state that the University of Ohio State is located in, though I have nothing to back that up on.

Also, Boomer Sooner is way worse. Probably because most tards who like Oklahoma and their cocksucker of a coach(who should've been Iowa's coach instead of Ferentz) think that Boomer and Sooner actually rhyme.

Yea I get that, I'm wondering whats up with the way it's said and why they do it. I was guessing maybe some bisexual OSU frat boys came up with it when listening to the village people.

Sidenote: I don't recall him being a candidate for the Iowa job.

OH-IO is just retarded.

Boomer Sooner is bad but not nearly as bad as OH-IO.

The fact that I'm a Michigan fan has nothing to do with this.

Are you not aware that Ohio State is in Ohio? Seems like you have a logic gap.

Asking the origins of OH-IO is almost as smart as asking the origins of GO Blue. How dense are you?

How bad is your reading comprehension?

I'm asking why it is said they way it is, with the gap in the middle. OH-(dramatic pause for stupid effect)-IO... wow, brilliant just BRILLIANT! You don't see people in Iowa going IO-(dramatic pause for stupid effect)-WA because it's stupid.

The best that people at OSU could come up with was spelling out the letters of the state, with a random pause in the middle for no reason? I fail to see how that even represents the school. Any college in the state could use the same cheer. Hey look, we pay 20k a year to spell out Ohio... hooray!

"Go Blue" is at least referencing something specific about the team (it's colors), but this discussion isn't about Michigan. I realize you want to divert it because you are now sitting there going... yep, spelling out our OH-IO is pretty dumb, why do we do that and you can't figure it out. Was it that hard to come up with something related to a Buckeye?

Look at Renae's post about Boomer Sooner, at least Sooner is the team name which I have now decided makes it the better cheer.

I think it probably references the state they play in. So the color of a team is a good cheer, but the state they play in isn't? So maybe we should change it to Scarlett-Gray?

Besides you don't say the whole thing, one person yells out OH and someone else responds IO. It's also pretty cool when each quarter of the stands says a letter and it goes around the stadium.

Sidenote- At Bucs games the same thing happens, one side says Tampa and the other says Bay. So it's not like OSU is the only team that does this.

So what you are saying is that it's the whole taste great/less filling thing?

And yes, referencing a teams specific color is better than bringing up the state they are in, because any team from the state can use it and it makes no difference. No one at Florida State is making the gator chomp, however the Ohio Center for Dysfunctional Crack Heads could use OH-IO. It just doesn't seem to be specific to OSU.

I guess it is hard to create a cheer around Buckeye though, since it is "The tree species Aesculus glabra is commonly known as Ohio buckeye, American buckeye, fetid buckeye, or stinking buck-eye. It derives its unflattering common names from the disagreeable odor generated when the leaves are crushed."

You guys are named after a smelly tree. It's starting to make sense now... Oklahoma wins AINEC.

Actually it wasn't the intent at all.

I posted it after seeing Renae post the Boomer Sooner pic in the other thread, and talking about being the real OSU. I never really understood the point of either cheer, both of them are well known and both of the schools are highly successful programs. I should have made an alt account and posted it though, and the Michigan stuff would have stayed out of the thread because that's not what it was about.

There are some OSU fans I like to mess with on here (you know the ones who like to threaten physical violence), but there are two or three of you I like enough not to make trolling posts for arguments sake. And if I was going too I wouldn't need to disguise it under a Oklahoma post, I'll come out and say I can't stand OSU.

None of you OSU fans have still answered my question about how the tradition of OH-IO started. It took one Oklahoma fan to do in ten seconds what Buckeye fans have failed to in over a day, instead of answering a simple question all I get is "tressel owns you" and "go blue is gay" crap. This thread had nothing to do with Michigan until a OSU fanboy got his panties in a bunch because his precious tradition that he apparently doesn't know the history of was questioned.

It's just a chant, I don't think there is a whole lot behind it. It might be kinda stupid but so is the whiny Florida State tomahawk chant. So is yelling pig sooey on a kickoff, or go dawgs sik em.

If I were making a list of cool OSU traditions OH-IO wouldn't be anywhere near the top. I think it's just something to get people into the game inside the stadium, if you hear it outside it's probably some drunk guy that just wants to be loud.

I'm honestly curious, what are the other OSU traditions you would rank ahead of it?

I've actually seen a lot of sober OSU fans do it while not at football games. I remember reading a post on here not long ago about some OSU fan golfing, seeing another guy wearing OSU gear and yelling OH at him to see if he would respond with IO. When that is happening, I think it's crossed over into new territory.
