Anybody see Chris Simon's stomp on Ruutu on Saturday? It's easily found on youtube if not. He got a match penalty for it and surely a huge suspension is coming.

What do you guys think he gets this time? 50 games?
Fenxis
Nope we haven't heard about it, we haven't had people link youtube videos nor discussed it dry.gif

oops - I couldn't believe there wasn't a thread on it. I don't look in the team threads much

I'm pretty sure Simon will get suspended for the balance of this season, and must re-apply for reinstatement next season, at which point the NHL will rule on whether or not to allow him back into the league...

a ruling like this would be very satisfying. If the Islanders decided to release him I would be surprised to see another team pick him up.

The Flyers would grab him.

Having him would actually raise the class and respectability of that team icon_confused.gif

Sigh. I just saw this today. If what Gruven predicts actually happens, I'll be very satisfied.

Since I haven't seen anything on it, I'm assuming Ruutu wasn't hurt, right?

I don't think he ever left the bench, not that it matters. CC is getting better about punishing the act and the intent, not the injury.

Hard to argue with your record but I was thinking like 20 games.

I have no inside info, but I think I have a read on how Colin Campbell and the NHL think..... and I think the big worry here is, if you don't slam him HARD..... and a month from now he steps on someones neck and kills them.... the optics would be absolutely horrid for the NHL...

I agree but this is the first time Simon has stepped on someone. He has done a lot of other sh*t in the past which I think is going to hurt him more than the thought of stepping on someone again.
They are probably not too worried about stepping on someone but that he will definitely do something else next time.

Yeah, that was my point. Not the specific worry of him stepping on someone...that was just an example... but more in the line of thought that Simon obviously has a switch in his head that goes 'click' and he is no longer in control. I've spoken to him, nice guy... but he could easily go off and pound a guy's head into the ice, or give someone a two handed chop to the head... it's a matter of him not being able to control himself. And I think some time off might get him some help....

I don't think he'll ever play in the NHL again, to be honest.

not enough IMO.

What are this guy's past "issues" i hear analysts refer to about him. Apparently Nolan helped him through them in the past? Was he already gettting psychyatrict help?
Petoria
He should get a full season off and reinstated only under the conditions that he gets severe anger management help, speaks to a psychiatrist, etc..

He's going to end a career if he doesn't get under control. Also, if he does anything remotely this attrocious again, he needs to be gone for good.

The big story of from Wednesday was, obviously, the record-setting 30-game suspension handed down to Chris Simon for getting all stompy. The suspension prompted all sorts of reactions and emotions from interested parties all around the league.

The NHLPA is 'baffled' at how long Simon was suspended for, thinking their boy would get 15 games, at most. If Chris Simon does appeal, the NHLPA would lend their full support. It would also show that Simon really doesn't have any remorse for his actions nor understand the punishment he received.

Speaking of remorse, commenter 'jw300' made a great point about how Simon doesn't seem to care about how his actions affect the people he's intending to injure.

Simon HAS made a statement and it goes like this: "I want to start off by making it clear that there is no excuse for my actions on Saturday night and I apologize to everyone involved." The Islanders and I agree that the right thing to do is for me to take some time away from the team."

Again, he doesn't specifically apologize to the victim. Instead he makes a generalized, blanket apology. I agree that psychologically, that says a lot. This guy has some short circuited wires in his brain and he needs serious help and a lifetime ban from the NHL.

Really, if somebody needs to be constantly monitored, it makes you question why they are even allowed in the league in the first place. Rough and tough play is one thing, but thuggery and violence is another. Of course, the NHLPA doesn't seem interested, as usual, in protecting the SAFETY of it's members, but rather their cushy jobs and paychecks.

While I believe Simon should have been suspended for the entire season PLUS playoffs, it appears that most media commentators believe the suspension is just right, like Goldilocks's porridge. It just remains to be seen if Gary Bettman will allow Simon back into the league once his suspension is up, and if the Islanders will welcome back Simon with open arms.

Have to argue with this point. He didn't hurt the guy at all. A general apology to fans, teamates, sounds fine to me. I like the length of the suspension as well.

On another note:
Pornger has been suspended on 6 different occasions but if he does this does he get the year? I don't think so. I realize this is Simon's 7th or 8th suspension but you can't just give him life because he's not a superstar.

Arguably Pronger's suspensions have been shorter but then again, perhaps the reason they are shorter was because of his status...

Hockey play vs non-hockey play. Apples and oranges. Although I agree that Pronger has gotten off lightly in the past, mostly due to his status as an All-Star. I also believe that shield is now gone for elite players...

As per an interview with Roy McGregor he's thinking of appealing the suspension...

Hey, anyone remember in like 2000 when Simon scored like 50 points out of nowhere, 10 years into his career as a thug, so the Caps started marketing him as a goal-scorer? Remember that? That was weird, huh?
