The sad thing is, with that kind of dexterity and right/left hand coordination, he could probably play a real guitar very well, but I'd bet a dimebag that he can't.

QFT.

After I saw my friend playing this game I realized if he had spent the same amount of time he did playing the game
on actually learning guitar, he'd be able to play by now. The game is a lot of fun, but not as much fun
as playing guitar.

yeah, that's what I never really got about the who guitar hero game. I mean, you guys know there are real guitars, right? Never made any sense to me. But then again, when I played guitar I made a concerned effort not to learn how to play like old zepplin songs or stuff like that... so like, learning how to play Reign of blood to begin with never did anything for me, but learning how to play reign of blood on a video game is really beyond me. His performance ( as it were) was still quite impressive, from a videogame standpoint, however.

Who says they don't know how to play guitar. It's just a video game. I have been playing guitar for 19 years. I have all 4 Guitar Hero games as well. There is a big difference between the both. I know friends who play guitar better than I could ever dream of and they have a terrible time playing this game. I don't get into the game like these kids but it is fun to play when friends are over.

You can pick up the game and be playing and beating the first levels in ten minutes, no one in the world has done that with a real guitar. It's a game, it's nothing like playing a real instrument.
El Guapo
I did not realize this was a game you could beat, I thought it was glorified Kareoke for guitars. Sounds gay.

I don't know anyone who plays this game who has only played it for ten minutes. I do know several people who have spent a considerable amount of time on it.

Everyone thinks it is gay till they play it, then 90% of those people bogart the controls so no one else can play. I have seen it countless times.

It's the ability to pick it up and learn to play it in less than 10 minutes. No one picks up a real guitar and learns to play in ten minutes.

That makes no sense. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to pick this game up and play it. This video shows someone doing something that I would venture a guess that not even 1% of GH players can even come close to doing. But comparing this game and the skill it takes to play it compared to learning how to play a guitar is laughable.

You can do some basic things in 10 minutes on Guitar Hero, but you can't master it that fast. At least I couldn't. And I'm sure it took that guy in the video a lot more than ten minutes to reach that level of proficiency.

With a real guitar I could have you strumming a chord in about ten minutes.

Regardless, my point wasn't to compare the relative difficulty of learning these things; it was just to say that if you took the amount of time spent playing the game and instead put it into learning the guitar, you would have some ability on the guitar that you would find rewarding.

Way, way, way less that 1 percent of GH players can do that, for the record.

They (GH and a real guitar) are certainly "different", but anyone who could do that with a Guitar Hero "guitar" is a pretty damn good candidate for eventually becoming a damn good real guitarist.

His digital speed and dexterity not to mention his L/R coordination is probably in the top 1% of the population at large, be he playing a video game or playing a real guitar. It's sad to see people like that waste their talents becoming proficient playing Guitar Hero when, I believe, using those talents to play a real instrument is something much more valuable and profound.
Of course, he may be a beast of a real guitarist and just applied his gifts to GH, but I'd lay odds against that.

Or more likely, playing a real guitar isn't as fun as sitting around with a bunch of your college buddies drinking and goofing off on a video game.

Actually, sitting around with a bunch of your buddies playing real guitars, drinking and goofing off is substantially more fun than sitting around with same and playing a video game.

It's a 5 year old doing it, and compared to just standing still twiddling your fingers it's pretty impressive. Without DDR, there is no GH.

Agreed, but you need to be sure to have enough buddies who can play guitar. Listen, I choose my actual guitar over GH anyday, but none of my friends play guitar but they will play this so it's all cool.

If you figure out a system for actually wagering on this and then placing a bet, I'd definitely do it. Just looking at him, and watching his hands /fingers move, I'm willing to bet he's a pretty good guitarist. Not as good as he is at Guitar Hero, relatively speaking, but still "good" nonetheless.
BigDMcGee
Also, when I saw the original link to this, and clicked on it, I was shocked to see that it was a frat-guy white dude, and not an asian. Asia's starting to slip w/r/t youtube video game greatness.
Don Giovanni
i also noticed he seemed to be making a lot of real guitar movements in his left hand, might suggest he does play guitar. but it could also just be something developed from playing this game a lot.
mk
there's no doubt in my mind that this dude actually plays guitar or at the very least is musically gifted in some capacity. simply getting the rhythm correct on this tune requires more than video game chops.
Suited_Up
He didn't hit all the notes though. So it wasn't perfect.

See if you can find someone who does that with 100% accuracy.

Yeah, you beat me to this post.

OF COURSE he's a nasty guitarist on the real thing. I'm all for the argument that people waste their time on this game when they should be doing the real thing, but this kid is obviously talented.

Jews know nothing about the mechanics of actual talent.
They only know how to recognize it and attempt to exploit it for their own gain, but they certainly couldn't tell you if Eric Johnson is technically "better" than Shawn Lane (they could most definitely tell you which one would sell more records, though)
mk
and lol at all this talk of people 'wasting' their time on this game instead of the actual instrument. anyone can play guitar. it's probably the easiest of any instrument to learn.

It's "easy" to learn how to strum a few chords.
It's just as difficult to master or attain a high degree of proficiency with the guitar as it is with anything else.

instruments way harder than guitar:

harp
organ
piano
xylophone

I can come close to beating the exact same song he played, there's no guarantee that this kid plays Guitar. FWIW, I've never played a guitar in my life although I did play piano for like 10 years. I'd agree with whoever said that he's probably musically inclined, as I'm pretty sure people who are good at music will be better at Guitar Hero.

How is playing the game wasting time compared to learning to play a real guitar. The are both hobbies for the vast majority of the people who do it.
SuperJon
I've been playing real guitar for almost 10 years. I'd say I'm a pretty good player. When it comes to GH, I can't play worth a damn.

I hate that game.

Yeah, Li Jie is your typical Asian "musician".
Technically perfect at whatever they play, but totally unable to create anything on their own.
(Which is a larger testimony to the overall achievement spectrum of the Oriental races- The germ of creation is entirely absent in those 'people'. Superb technical analysts and miniaturizers, though. )
