In New York City, you're basically ****ed. That right has been taken away from you. Hope you feel "safe" because of it.
But hey, look on the bright side. Even though that option isn't open to you, at least you don't have anything to be "paranoid" about.

thats a really neat way to get yourself either shot or into a whole lot of trouble.

im all for people having guns and whatnot, but stuff like this is just crazy. have you considered the consequences for shooting someone? you do realize you can kill them right? you are going to take somebody's life becouse they rob you for $50 and some pizza? no i'm going to take somebody's life because they would most likely take my life for that $50
now this kind of scares me. not becouse you hear that somebody got pulled over and ran from the cops in your neighborhood and get scared and run for your gun. no, that kind of paranoia is just sad. it's not paranoia, it's heightened awareness what scares me is that you seem geniunly excited about the prospect of getting to use your gun to shoot somebody. no, we're satisfied with being able to balance the scales and refusing to be victims
exactly. you really think you need to own a gun to feel safe? no, but it sure helps i've lived in new york city for 24 years and i've had a gun pulled on me once, and you know what? i was probably asking for it. way to go douchebag, if you deserve it i'll pull my gun on you too with your "slight heroin problem if I think your a junkie coming after me. if you want to decrease your likelihood of dying stop smoking and eating like a pig and maybe go for a walk once in a while. and if you want to keep your kids safe, you can try making them do this too. want to decrease your likelihood of dying? stop trying to confront legal gun owners
again, don't get me wrong. i think that people should be able to own guns. i think its 100% necessary that people be allowed to own guns. but sheesh, you sure are an awfully paranoid lot. it's not paranoia when people are really out to get you or see above

--------

sorry to hijack your thread hank. ill try to contribute something a little more on topic.

so i've never shot a gun in my life and would like to. where would i go for this sort of thing? would i look up a shooting range in the phone book and give them a call? is that like a normal thing they do, have classes about this sort of thing?

well, if you really are interested in learning to shoot, it's most likely going to be difficult in NYC. First, find a class or something to learn how to safely handle firearms. Every pro gun person in this thread will tell you they're not toys and we don't view them as such. As much as we talk about how good a gun looks or how good it feels in the hand, we all understand the incredible responsibility that comes with owning a gun. So if you really want to devote some time, effort, and money into learning how to shoot safely and responsibly, well good for you and welcome to the fold. Now go do the work.
I would highly suggest that whether you start out with a rifle or pistol you start with a .22. They're cheap to shoot and easy to handle. With a .22 you can quickly gain a grasp of the fundamentals of good shooting and it will translate to higher caliber weapons. The basics for all firearms are the same.

Good luck, and I hope you give it a fair chance.

I think that not having a gun in NYC really doesn't hinder how protected you are. I understand the logic of wanting a gun if you live in a rural area miles away from anything else. In this city, at least, I think you'd do fine without a gun.

I've only fired a gun once in my life. It was at a police station firing range with whatever standard gun the cops there used. It was pretty fun, I guess. I'd do it again. I used to be really into guns, especially the history of them. For some reason I was fascinated by the developmental history of weapons and firearms.

I don't own any and I don't foresee myself ever owning any. In the city, I think a deadbolt gives me a million more times the protection of a handgun. But, maybe some day I'll wonder over to a range and have some fun.

I've got a 12 gauge Sears & Roebuck that my great uncle gave to me and then a Remington .22 long rifle that he also gave to me. For now those are the only guns I own, but I'm only 20. When I get older I hope to expand this collection into a few high powered rifles and some sort of pistol. My friend had a 9 mm pistol that he would bring out to my farm to shoot and he let me shoot it obv. It's so much fun to shoot pistols.

I know my shotgun is pretty old and not the greatest brand but it's got sentimental value. I pretty much just use it for pheasant hunting and trap shooting.

There's nothing wrong with hanging on to a "less than great" gun. As long as it does what it's supposed to do, fine. Throw in sentimental value on top and it's worth more than it is on paper by far.

I applaud his choice to defend himself if it proves necessary, but he could do a lot better on the choice of carry weapon IMO. A .38 snubbie is a terrible defense weapon. It's 50x as terrible in the hands of someone who doesn't practice with it very often, if ever, you'd be lucky to hit a tree from 10 feet away.

good point. i wasn't applauding the choice of weapon. i was applauding the choice and the method. the only way i'd carry a snub .38 is as a drop piece (which i'd never do because that would be unethical).

Qucik response Hank then no more debate. We live in a unicncorporated area we have 2 sherrifs on duty on the weekend and one during the week. We are alone on an island (almost literally) I have been out here almost 7 years now and never seen the ghetto bird, they are not going to use the resources to bring that out unless a serious crime had been commited. I was also have a 2 year old at home and a pregnant wife, so yes when my back yard is getting spotlit like I was living back in a city, it is concerning.

So when the only reason that I keep a gun in my house and not at my buddys in his safe, and I do not have ammo, it is a lit disconcerting. I felt it relevant to post here since this thread happened to be started the same day. Thats it, I'm not trigger happy or anything like that, I only shoot my guns once or twiced a year at that.

i'm told my grandpa had as old 10 gauge shotgun. it's probably in his attic somewhere.

anyone know anything about these? value, etc.

also, would i have to find a custom cartridge maker for it?

edit: i found some stuff on google about 10 gauges. it looks like they weren't as rare as i thought. i think his is a single shot pump action but really have no clue. looks like i'll have to find it to get any info on it.

They'll kick the soul out of your body if you shoot them with a heavy buck or slug.

I used to shoot pigs with an old 10 gauge Spanish SXS cut down to 18". I'd load brass hulls full of #4 buck. Even @ 18", that ****** was still a bear to tote. Those huge bores use up a lot of steel...

Of all the firearms I've ever owned, if I were to pick one that most closest resembled a "hand of god" sort of result against gods living creatures, it would be that 10 gauge with 4 buck up close on hogs. It absolutely destroyed them, immediately and without exception. I shot a Florida deer (much smaller than other deer) with it one time and damn near turned it for a flip.

Well if you like getting kicked in the shoulder by a mule then get some slugs. As scram said a 10 gauge is a beast of a weapon, one that you are not likely to put more then 8-10 rounds through before you cry "uncle". As far as what it is worth, you would have to find out make, model, age, and what kind of shape it is in.

Some Internet Gun Board theorists don't like them (for whatever reason; web board theorists are usually tards anyway), but the 92FS I had was probably the only 9MM I've ever owned that was as reliable as my G17 or CZ75.

Absolutely. Plus, the ammo is fairly economical which makes for great plinkibility.

But if you're looking at a Beretta I like my 96FS. Not as good penetration from the round but it's got more stopping power which I like on the off chance that'll I have to actually use it. Not a lot of crackheads wear body armor.

thanks, much appreciated.

Love my Sig229 it's my primary carry gun. I also have an old Colt 38 that I keep in the car.

I also have a Mossberg for primary home defense. Nothing like a 12 gauge for that, just the sound of racking a shell will send most criminals running.

I have many other guns for shooting fun. I hate to say it but the SKS is the most fun. Cheep ammo and very accurate with iron sites. I sold my mini14 after I got it.

just got back from shooting my new .30-06 for the first time and I am quite impressed. it was bore sighted in the store and it was pretty damn accurate right out of the box. Man hospitalised after shooting car wheel

A US man is recovering in hospital after an attempt to loosen a stiff wheel nut on his tyre with a hand gun backfired.

The 66-year-old Washington man was repairing his car outside his home when the accident happened, BBC News reports.

Frustrated with the inability to loosen the wheel nut, the man pulled out a 12-gauge shot gun and blasted it at the wheel.

Buckshot and debris sprayed back onto the man, giving him severe — but not life threatening — injuries.

The debris flung back on to his feet and all the way to his abdomen, with some fragments reaching as far up as his chin.

Police said the man was not intoxicated at the time.

He had been working on his Lincoln Continental for a fortnight, police said.

"He's bound and determined to get that lug nut off," said Deputy Scott Wilson, a spokesman from the sheriff's office.

I don't know about the PPS in particular, but my dad bought a walther .380 and absolutely hated shooting it. Constant feed problems and nasty recoil that actually bruised his hand after 50-100 rounds.

If I remember correctly, American model PPS's are actually produced by Smith & Wesson.

I talked to my dad and he said the Walther he had was PPK, which is a scaled down version of the PPS. The PPS carries an extra round etc.
He strongly recommends you reconsider the Walther purchase. He returned his in under 30 days and bought his Beretta.

QFT, stay away from the Walther products. In my experience they are picky about ammo and require a bit of tuning to work well. That kind of thing can be fun to do but it's not for the casual shooter.

Took the .380 to the range the other and got to talking with another guy there that was shooting a Sig P229 in .40 S&W. He let me shoot off a clip with it and I let him try out mine.
All in all a very nice gun. I noticed the recoil a bit more than I did with my Beretta .40, but I'm not sure if that was simply because it was a gun I've never fired before, if it was because I had fired a couple dozen rounds with the .380, or if was because of the actual gun itself. Given that the guy commented on how little recoil there was with the .380 I'm inclined to believe it's the 2nd but I'd like to do a comparison sometime.

Some of the first long guns I ever shot were black powders. I think I hit a dishwasher box once. Those things are beyond frustrating to shoot.

Here's a pic of me with the .380 testing the new camera. The target on the wall is one from the first time I shot the .380. The one lonely shot in the 8 ring and slightly left always reminds me of super troopers. "What that lil guy? I wouldn't worry about that lil guy."
