ok, so I'm late to the "I have guns" thread, but I have guns and would like to know what they (1 in particular) might be worth...

first, 9mm S&W with a Sig Sauer action...don't have it right with me now to give you any numbers, but I guarantee, it is what I just said..got it from grandpa about 6 years ago...

second, also from gramps.. Mannlicher Shoenauer 8mm bolt action rifle. thought it took 223 rounds, but they were too long in the cartridge, got Old Western Scrounger to custom make me some rounds, and it friggin kicks my ass when I shoot it.. fun times..

don't carry, but keep thinking I'd like to get a permit..especially after 9/11. Just felt like shit like that gives the hoodlums a reason to turn to lawlessness...

anyway, thoughts on the rifle would be appreciated. if you want more info, it'll take a week or so to get it, since that piece is somewhere else right now.

I just asked beans in the sick thread but I thought I might as well try here too. a nigga gotta branch out every now and then ya heard?
I'm looking into buying some sort of combat/tactical shotgun. anybody know some good ones/good places to start?

Are you looking at a regular stock or a snake charmer (pisto grip)?
I don't know much about shotguns but my gramps has a mossberg that he's owned for close to 30 years and it still fires like a champ. Mossberg, afik, has a really solid rep etc.

Dad says he's heard good things about the Winchester Defender.

Gun valuation is a tricky thing. A lot of it comes down to condition. Probably easiest to look up a gun smith in the yellow pages and let him look at it. Or, maybe take it to a gun show if you have one in the area and get some more expert opinion.

The 9MM's range would be 200-500 depending on condition, very similar to the one I have.

The Rifle I do not know. I have never shot an 8mm, but I have shot some similar guns/sniper rifles and they can be as expensive as 2k.

I'll add a caveat there, if the 8mm is an original parts etc it might be worth that much. However, there are a lot of 8mm bolt action knock offs out there. That's why I said valuation is complex. It depends on stamps, manufacturing, condition etc etc.

So my dad has been thinking about getting another Ruger Vaquero. Today, while he was searching on the web he found a local shop here that had a good price on one so he decided to go order it. I rode along because I needed to pick up some ammo for my pistols. While we were there I was looking around at all the guns, feeling like a kid in a candy store when I started talking to one of the guys working there about how I've wanted an M4 for years now. He suggested I hurry up and get it if I really wanted one because there's new legislation being drafted and the prices are gonna rise etc etc. Dad paid for his order, I picked up a couple boxes of bullets and we left.

About 15 minutes after we got home the store calls and tells him they put his order on the wrong card (we assumed he meant mine, turns out it was the manager's card) so he has to head back down to clear things up. As he's walking out the door he says to me "If I can skip birthday and Christmas gifts for the next couple years, I'll buy you that M4 today."

After the shock wore off (about 5 seconds) I said "Sold!"

So we went down and ordered this for me today:

Details:
Mfg Bushmaster

I'm walking around grinning like an idiot right now.
It's gonna be a looooong 5-10 days.

thats awesome. you will absolutely have a blast shooting it. I swear mine was one of the best investments I've ever made. I absolutely love it.

on a related note, I have been thinking about buying a new "assault style" gun since they'll all probably be illegal soon, but I can't think of what I would want. the only guns I actually currently want are a combat shotgun of some sort, or an M14, which really isn't considered an assault rifle I don't think. anybody have any ideas?

I've often thought about getting an M14 myself. I've heard nothing but good things about them (unless you try and fire it on fully auto) but if they were to put the ban back in place I don't think they would be part of it. If I was going the M14 route though I would look more to the scoped/sniper rifle type of modifications which can get pricey in a hurry with that rifle.

If you've got the scratch I absolutely looooved firing the MP5 but I don't know how accessible they are to the average guy.
You could always go the SKS/AK-47 route, but I didn't particularly care for the one I shot.
Have you thought about an Uzi? I fired one a long time ago and it was a fun one, of course the one I shot was fully auto so I'm sure that played a big role in the fun.
I held a shotgun today that was more of tactical shotgun, sorry I can't remember the specs but I'll try and remember to look again when I go pick up my M4. But if you want a "lifelong" type of tactical shotgun I really think Mossberg is a good place to start looking.

yeah thats the thing about the m14, its a really nice gun, but it probably isn't going anywhere, so its not a rush one to buy.

and hmm, the MP5. now thats an idea. I wonder how much a semi auto would go for? they have them new you think? I know the class three ones are reeeeeeediculously expensive.

edit: well after a quick google it doesn't look like there are any "civilian" versions of the MP5 out there, not even semi auto, because of the barrel length. the same thing would be true for the uzi. i forgot about that. they have the ones with the long barrel, but they're kinda silly looking. I guess I'll have to stick to a long rifle of some sort. and I agree with you on the AK. I mean, they're ok, but definitely not my first choice. I think the thing is, the popularity of the M4 base has made it pretty much the only base version of an "assault" rifle out there now. I can't even really think of any other kind other than variations on the original.

the search continues.

Yeah I wouldn't get too excited about the prospect of an MP5 unless you're willing to get federal licenses and pay upwards of a few grand from the quick searches I just did. Sorry to cocktease.

Shakey, Shakey, Shakey....

You can have an exact copy of an MP5 (except not full auto, $15K plus for those) by buying an SP89 (pistol version), submit a form1 to the ATF and get approval for an AOW (all other weapon), and add a stock to it... or buy a long barreled clone and register it as a SBR (short barreled rifle)

You cannot turn a rifle into a pistol, but you can turn a pistol into a rifle...

Adding a stock to a pistol makes it illegal without the tax stamp

SP89 pistol

SP89 stock adapter $95

Pistol plus $200 tax and stock

Once you have the AOW tax stamp, you can use it in a remotely operated briefcase or

Use a fore-grip

You could also permanently attach a suppressor to the short pistol barrel (by welding) to make the overall length greater than sixteen inches and legally install a stock on the pistol without any additional tax other than for the silencer

Hank congrats buddy!! If your Dad is anything like mine, you will still get some presents. So thats the best of both worlds there.

I am not that familiar with the M4. I do not think I have shot one. I'm also not sure if it is legal in CA. (too lazy to research)

It looks like an AR-15 from the picture, shoots the same 223 rounds. Is it close? My buddy just bought one of those, that I have yet to see, but I have shot a few AR's and they are fun. I agree with the AK or SKS, they are great guns, but I don't really dig on them. My friend has an old SKS with a folding bayonet which is pretty cool. Used to have an AK before he had to get rid of it.

It's in the AR-15 family. It's like a carbine model of the M-16. Telescoping stock for close quarters work. One of the main reasons I've wanted one for so long is it's very customizable (see pic below for some of the gear you can put on one). Down the road I'm sure I'll put optics on it and maybe some other things to trick it out. Maybe I can get another upper receiver for it and talk beans into machining a supressed version for me when I can afford the proper licenses, of course.

Thats why I have never shot one, can't have that in CA.

i generally have nothing against gun ownership, but in all reality some of these guns are military weapons and should be used solely for that reason. on that note, the only guns ive ever shot were a 9mm beretta (my friend is a cop, weeee backwoods) and a M16 at the local army batallion. OMFG.

You ain't shittin bud. I went out and bought the rod (hehe rod), brushes, extra clip etc today and cleaned it tonight.

Started at around 5:30 central and just finished about 10 minutes ago. But, I think now that I'm more familiar with disassmbly/assembly I can shave 15 minutes off that time.

Damn all those little pieces.

I still love it though.

Make sure and buy a chamber brush...

Not sure if you have much experience with the AR's but always clean the bore from the chamber side. Any weapon that allows access to the chamber like bolt actions or break down singles should be cleaned this way too

It keeps the muzzle crown from being damaged by the cleaning rod..

Save yourself a lot of time by blasting the lower and bolt assembly with a can of Gun Scrubber spray. I dont like field stripping them anyway and the spray gets the crud out just as good

Repeated stripping can lead to enlarged fire control holes in the lower. A semi lower isnt too expensive, but a registered auto is north of ten grand now

The last time I ran the sixteen, I stopped by the car wash and blasted the lower and bolt. When I got home I dried it with compressed air and immersed them in WD40 overnight

Never run Wolf ammo in it... its the worst

You should really consider buying a press and reloading your own ammo. Its a relaxing hobby and is much cheaper if you do a lot of shooting

First round fired was 12 o'clock on the X ring of a 12 inch shoot n see target @ 20 yrds.

I really loved shooting it.

Dad brought along his Glock .45 and let me fire a few. He was shooting pretty well with almost all of his shots landing in the 9 or 10 ring as well as a couple in the X ring.

Of course all mine were X, 10, or 9 ring as well with a slightly better grouping, just to keep him from getting cocky.

Not terrible not great. I bought my dad a sig p226 9mm for his carry weapon (he was a cop) so he gave me his old one, which is this gun. I'd rather have a sig. I also have the 15 round clips which is why I will never get rid of it.

You need to post some pics Scott.

I've never been a huge browning fan, but they are pretty good guns.

Its jammed a few times on me. The bullet gets cockeyed in the chamber sometimes.

Yeah I've heard (and seen) Smiths have more of problem with this. Another part of the reason dad dumped his Walther (US Walthers are manufactured by S&W).

In the service we tore em down and blasted away with WD 40.

Nice. That's what the SAS used to carry before they went to Sig.

The Browning Hi power has an excellent rep and really like my .380 Browning.

I know it has a good rep, and I didn't say they were bad, IIRC I really did not like they way the 9mm I shot handled particularly well.

I've never fired or even held a browning hi power. About all I know about 'em is they are sought after by collectors and have a solid rep. Of course, part of the rep may simply be from the SAS days and collectors inflating the market price for them.

I'm kind of weird about my guns, not only do they have to shoot good but they need to look good too. I just don't like the way these look.

I've had these for almost twenty years.

Me? Pictures????

The Browning is sweet. Very accurate, been a while since I've been out shooting though.

The AK I bought from a buddy (collector) who needed cash for $200. He said it was Israeli, but I've since found out it could be Chinese. ? meh...

The pistol stock bolt broke a while back and I have not been able to find a replacement. I may have to eventually buy an after market stock set up. This thing is just a riot to shoot. Really really sweet firing and very accurate as a mutha. Again...these guns are clean but have not been fired in a good while.

A firearms thread meet up? That would be awesome.

Beans would probably have to fly us though, don't think I'd want to deal with the hassle of trying to fly my arsenal commercial.
