What do you guys think of Kevin Smith. I think he is a very talented script writer but I think he doesn't take enough risks. He is constantly doing movies with the same general feel and the same tired actors. While I respect his loyalty to his friends by giving them parts in his movies, I think he is short changing himself by doing it. I'd love to see him do something big budget and main stream just to see how it would turn out. I know he has had hands in writing stuff that is fairly main stream, but to this point, he hasn't directed anything remotely main stream. Does anyone else wish he would do something sweet like a video game or super hero adaption without casting his friends. I know he has said he isn't much of a visual director, but why not give it a try?

Also, I think his openness and accessibility both on his blog and in his Q&A sessions is somewhat over done. He uses extremely foul language yet manages to come off as being very smart. I don't know, I guess I just want to see something really awesome out of him, instead of the B-movies he makes due to his stubborness and or hate of big-time hollywood.

What do you guys think?

I guess I'll be the first to ask. Was it really necessary to put "(clerks Director)" in the subject line?

There's a cool movie called This Movie is Not Yet Rated that has interviews with him about the rating system

An evening with Kevin Smith is hilarious

I think that after the sort of flop with Jersey girl that he feels that he knows his abilities and limitations

His fans love him for his personal voice and he'd even admit his limitations as a director so directing someone elses script seems unlikely to happen

Maybe he should be an intern for Robert Rodriguez for a while or go to film school

I think he'd love to direct transformers 2 - that just isn't going to get financed

Hollywood has typecast him as a low budget director - a low brow woody allen if you will

To be honest, I kinda' liked Jersey Girl. I don't know why I did, but I didn't think it was near as bad as most KS fans like to think it was. Maybe I'm just a fag.

I'm not saying its bad just that it was his mainstream attempt and it flopped - it may have been take down by Bennifer Gigli backlash

Guy really bugs me. He comes across to me as a pompous and condescending ass hole. Reminds me a little of the Comic Book Store Owner from The Simpsons

Yeah because the traffic is so high in ETMM that starting threads about controversial directors is such a waste of space.

What has he done lately that's so controversial. Played a poker tournament as his comic shop.... OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really hate Kevin Smith. When I was in Vegas, he was playing at the Bellagio, and my friend -- who hates him more than ANYONE -- sat at his table, berated him, and just fucking abused him in pot after pot. Thought that was fun. He wasn't very good.

Controversial in terms of film content and whether he actually has any talent or not.

It's not like he is putting out something like brokeback mountain, he has his talents and limitations which he freely admits too (see Evening with Kevin Smith 1 & 2 or his blog).

I think you have something against this guy that goes beyond his foul language and over-accessibility, although I have yet to decipher exactly what it is. I also think you just made this topic to find a bunch of "yes men" who think just like you.

I was thinking both of these quotes.
I love Kevin Smith's movies. Jay and Silent Bob and Clerks 2 are my favorites. It would be cool to see him doing some 'main stream' stuff, but I don't think he would like doing that.

He was pretty good in Catch and Release, playing the sardonic fat friend, but he was made for that. He knows who he is,big budget isn't it,and the backlash from his hardcore fans wouldn't be worth it. An Evening with Kevin Smith was one of the best things I ever watched on Cinemax at 3 in the morning with no expectations- the story about directing Princes movie is classic.

You couldn't be further from the truth. I actually love him as a director and writer, but I just wish he would push his boundaries that he has set up for himself is all. And no, I absolutely was not hoping to find yes men who think like me. Thanks for trying though, its not every day someone makes such an innacurate assumption about me, usually I'm much easier to read than that.

I don't know why, but I really, really fucking hate you. I just fucking HATE you. I'm not even sure if it's rational. It's just that everything you write makes me want to tell you how much I fucking hate you.

Kevin Smith owns, because he seems like just a regular guy. With all the doucheclowns in hollywood, he's refreshing.

I liked "Clerks" best, but have yet to see "Mallrats". Also really loved "Dogma", being a former catholic, the movie really appealed to me.

As for doing big budget things, he is signed on to direct the first episode of the "Heroes" spinoff in the future, not sure when that's supposed to air. He was also signed on briefly to do a "Superman" remake a while back. Also there's a really funny clip of him talking about the experience on "Youtube", that's well worth watching.

This made me want to get "An Evening with Kevin Smith" 1 and 2. The dude can tell a story like none other.

He was a guest on Dinner for Five a couple of times and I think a guest host once. He was okay. I was kind of bored in the guest host episode with Stan Lee.
