once i turn the best two pair i decided to check/call down, especially since its a dry board. it will give him a chance to try to bluff at the pot or value bet a weak Q that he might fold if i lead the turn again

I don't think he has a good enough hand to fold but def. not a good enough hand to win based on his lack of raising, just calling your bet.

my gut says JTs or a set and he slowplayed you. but what do I know, I haven't been playing all that long

don't check the turn... it makes it so you have to guess if he has something or is just betting your lack of betting.

Your flop bet is weak and your turn check is where you lose control of the hand and the information gets very muddy. Bet that turn. I think you have to call the 1/2 pot bet on the river. Puke when he rolls over K8.

if it is a passive opponent I agree with this. A agro donk I guess I play it the same. Betting the turn just makes it soo much easier to see where you stand in the hand.

I would. Put in a good sized bet too. Checking or betting weak gives him plenty of chance to take control of the hand; maybe he's got a set or maybe he has nothing and puts you on an unimproved Ax that tried to take down the flop with a c-bet. If you bet 3/4 pot on the turn and he comes over the top you can lay this down.

As played I'd probably call the river, but I think you definitely needed to be more aggressive before the river.

Agreed.

not to be results oriented but I did want to give the results of the hand
the button had KK. it is hard to tell whether he would have just called on the turn or pushed all in but i feel like if I would have bet the turn it would have given him a chance to make me make a bad fold somewhere in the hand.

did you know you had him beat by the river? if so, why not check-raise there, I think he would've called you with KK.

yeah i think he does too, but KK is one of the many hands he could have, besides a hand like this there aren't many hands that are going to bet the turn and call a c/r that i beat. so i think c/r is the worst of the three turn options (c/c, c/r, or b/f)

you dont want to reopen the betting on this street because you aren't like 90% sure you have him beat, & you're probably going to have to fold to a shove... by villain betting he has set the price for showdown... we have a strong hand, only beaten by trip 8s or better @ this point... we can get to showdown for NO ADDITIONAL COST... if we c/r obv w/e we raise is another "sunk cost" which sets the price higher, not to mention we give villian the chance to then RERAISE our c/r & put us in a must fold situation... at a huge loss to us relative to what we could have just called on the river...

(wait, i'm not looking @ stack sizes, not sure if a c/r would commit us... whatever speaking in generalities)

i'd be saving the c/r for like 3s full of 8s or 8s full of 9s or something...
