I thought it was ok.

Surprisingly the best character wasn't played by Bale or Crowe. It was Crowe's second in command (Charlie?)

I guess it's worth seeing in the theatres. But, it's not a great movie by any means. It's solid though.

I'll put some thoughts in spoils below so if you read em before you see it well you're dumb.

I thought it was funny that of all the main characters only Crowe and the Railroad man were left alive. Yes the kids and the wife survived too but no one cares about them. All these people die to get Crowe to this train and they finally don't succeed, but at the last minute crowe shoots all his crew and decides to pay for his crimes by getting hanged. All of this for nothing essentially. (see balloon's post and my response as to why crossed out) this part after still applies somewhat. Yes. crowe did a solid for bale by making sure his family lives on, but I mean this bond between them at the end is just funny to me.

Also it seemed stupid that this great outlaw would allow himself to get caught like that. I mean I know pussy is pussy. And he got some fine pussy at that but still pretty stupid way to get caught after successfully planning 22 robberies.

The Luke Wilson cameo was dumb. A random would've been better suited there. Having him there just seems like it'll only make people say, "wtf is Luke Wilson doing in this cowboy movie or wth is he in this role"

The way they killed Fonda with Crowe just tossing him off that cliff was awesome. That was probably the coolest part of the movie. At least that's what I think at this moment.

that's all I got. decent flick

I haven't seen the movie yet and didn't read the spoilers, but it doesn't surprise me that Ben Foster stole the show again in this movie. He's an outstanding actor, I'd be shocked if he doesn't win an Oscar in the next 10 years.

Saw it tonight. My wife dragged me, but I enjoyed it. Different twist than most westerns.

Remember when Crowe whistled for his horse as the train rode off, then smiled, and he said earlier that he's escaped that jail 2 times already? He was planning on escaping, but if he didn't get on the train, then Bale's family doesn't get paid.

Ben Foster is awesome never knew he was in this before now. I also heard that Luke Wilson is in it and hes not terrible which would be a first. I wish he was the one that tried to kill himself sw.

Luke Wilson is not in it long enought to be either good or bad.

I thought this was an awesome movie. Crowe in badass form. I highly recommend it. The scenery was also great like all classic westerns. I wouldn't be suprised if this get oscar attention. And agreed Foster is great.

I thought I saw Luke Wilson in one of the trailers for this movie but he isn't on its IMDB page. I'm not a big fan of Westerns, but I want to see this.

This movies story line was dumbish and full of holes (no pun intended) but overall, this is a great western. So many great scenes, I call this a must see.

One of the best of the year. Put your brain on hold a bit and enjoy this ride.

Good stuff!

Excellent acting. A surprise role for Bale, not a role he's normally been in before: The passive, underdog. I don’t want to give anything away though. I recommend it. But then I really like Westerns. I think its like this whole other world where the rationale that we've grown up on doesn’t apply and isnt known.

Whoever said that Charlie Prince was the best acted character, its tough to disagree, that guy was amazing, but so was his character a badass which lends to feeling like it was a better job than it was.

On a side note, I heard the argument, again recently, that the white media awarded Denzel and Halle Oscars on two such ignominious roles, when they couldve been given to black actors for more respectable character roles. Not that I lend much weight to the idea in the first place but I wonder what the %age is for 'good' characters vs. 'bad' characters for winning awards. Bad/evil people are just more compelling, I think.

I totally agree with your last sentence. I guess with his character it was especially compelling because his side of the story was such a tragedy. He put all his will into saving his friend for who he would risk his life and would perhaps die for him, but it was a total waste of time because his friend kills him after all his effort.

edit: ugh at my sentence structure

My favorite cowboy movie is Tombstone.

Where does this rate? (I haven't seen it yet)

I actually think Denzel and Halle definitely deserved those oscars, Training Day is one of my favorite movies, and Halle's performance in Monster's Ball was also pretty powerful. But you can make a case for anybody who is nominated for winning an oscar its hard to say that someone did the best.

Its hard to compare with Tombstone. Even though I liked Tombstone, I liked 3:10 a little better.

Saw this movie last night. I am not a fan of westerns, and I wasn't intending to see this movie (other one was sold out), but I really enjoyed. Definitely recommended. The two characters were more multidimensional than your typical western villain and hero, and right and wrong were nicely blurred, made it very interesting.

actually I knew it when I saw the movie, but forgot when I was posting about it 12 hours later

as for why people aren't talking about it. it's a good movie, but not as great as you think it is. at least that's what other people's opinions are!

Maybe you haven't seen a lot of westerns? Watch "Unforgiven", "Shane", "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", "The Treasure of Sierra Madre", and "The Wild Bunch" (that's off the top of my head)

ive seen a lot of the westerns people consider classics (though im still trying to see Unforgiven at some point) but the reasons i think this movie is so great is:

1. how the real villain in the movie is the second in command guy, who has this crazy memorable voice, and is just crazy period.

2. the acting all around

3. the changes the wade guy goes through

4. the ending with the horse, you dont get whats happening and why wade is getting on the train but then youre like oh shit hes gonna escape on the horse, oh course!

5. when wade pwns his entire crew after they kill the rancher dude
