These will help your back.

yeah, I had a trainer and had a similar problem. your problem is likely due to a weak "core". too many people work out their abs but ignore their back muscles.

make sure you do exercises for your back and things like squatting really help your core muscles.

using a ball to lie on your back really eases the strain of crunches. be sure to do the crunches properly so that you can feel the burn. just using the bounce from the ball to fire your body back up does nothing.

Re-check the correct technique - there's loads of vids/pics/forums online to help. Try doing them in front of a mirror to see whether you can see anything obvious you're doing wrong... or even better, get someone to watch as you do them.

Back exercises as already suggested are good for strengthening. You must 're-balance' your core, with back exercises.

Also, if the pain remains, I think it's extremely worthwhile booking a session with a good physio. If something is wrong with your back, it's so important to get it seen to before it's too late. I had a slight problem with my back actually, about 2 months ago, after pushing too hard on a simple back exercise with dumbbells.

I went to see a physio who suggested acupuncture... I had one session only (I'd never had it before and if I'm honest I was very sceptical), but it was totally cured from the next day and I've had no probs at all since. If I'd left it longer I'm sure it wouldn't have been so easy to cure. Only $75... and worth it. They may not suggest acupuncture with you of course, but they'll be able to tell you if there is something wrong and what to do about it.

Hope it gets better soon.

physio is bs...I had 3 years of therapy and the benefits were minimal. I had acupuncture and have been gold since. good advice.

Wait, why sort of sit ups are you doing? The one with your hands behind your head, or your arms across your chest? The former is the wrong way, so I've heard.

You want to work your core.. it will strengthen your back and well as your abs..

And I just have one word for you if you want to do that.

Using the video option on digital camera might be of better use, since he can then concentrate on doing the exercises instead of contorting his head to watch in the mirror.
