Full Version: What Car Should I Buy?
FCP Poker Forum > Off Topic Forums > General
GabeTheKid
Hey, i know i had a thread about getting a car but i decided to wait for another year and save up more $ before doing that.

Now, I still think about it a lot and am researching into cars right now to figure out which one i should get...

The one that's winning the race right now is the RX8... http://www.motordesktop.com/wallpaper/spor...%201024x768.jpg

suggestions on what and why i should or shouldn't get a car are welcome...my price range is 25-35k and probably get it used or something...

Gabe

PS...i want to get my license plate to be something with 'GabeTheKid' ... any suggestions on shortening it a lil cuz i believe 8 letters is the most i can put on a license plate...

so far...i think GABDAKID is winning the race... Maybe.... GABETKID, perhaps GABEDAKD, ideas?
GabeTheKid
GABTHEKD? i like that one

Get a nice street bike and take whatever you have left and buy a truck for the winter. Probably not what you want but that's what I would do. GL and post pics when you get a ride!

I just bought a 2008 Ford Escape. I hate cars but they are a necessary evil. It's ok, comfortable, roomy and decent gas mileage. Too bad the Canyonero doesn't exist.

I had a Mazda that rarely gave me any trouble. When it did, the service was solid. Maybe that's not the norm, but in my life I've never heard anyone equate Mazda to Ford in terms of overall quality.

I think I was the one that recommended the RX-8 in the last thread, and I still think it's a good call. I hate personalized license plates like the ones you're considering, but that's neither here nor there.

I just need it to be able to make the monthly trip to A/C and the occasional trip to the grocery store/mall, etc...I can walk to work so hopefully I won't need their service much.

Mazda is Ford, partly. The B series trucks are Ford Rangers. I'm not sure what other models are comparable.

i test drove an RX8 today and am probably buying one tomorrow. At first i wasn't too impressed because of the jerkiness that occured every time i switched gears. But, I was told that i wasn't getting the RPM high enough...lol...i was getting it to 4-5 as i'm used to with my ford taurus...

Now, the specific car i'm considering is a red RX8 with a mileage of 48k km.

It's a 2005 model and they're asking for 25k...Now i'm not planning to finance it. I'm planning to pay for it all in cash and am wondering what i should offer. I was thinking 20k? and then work from there and only get it everything plus tax is under 25k as that is what i am willing to pay.

any tips for driving it or maintaining it will be greatly appreciated...How should i negotiate with the salesman? what should i say? tips please.

Also, what insurance should i expect to pay on it in london ontario? 4k? 5k? 6k?

thanks.

I would not get the RX8 if you plan on keeping it for more than a year or two, first they do not have a very good resale and the engines (being that they are rotary engines) do not last very long. My brother was going to buy one of these, he got a dodge dont know why I typed dodge Ford lighting instead, and talked to a bunch of mecahnics and the consensus was the engines are toast at about 75K miles and they are extremely expensive to repair. Just my 2Cents

By the way...with all the modern doohickies and such why the fuk is it still such a pain in the ass to buy a car? It still takes hours out of my day without having to do financials and credit checks? WTF? And you still get some greasy salesman named Chuck...I hate cars and their purveyors.

I have heard nothing but good about the rx8 and would love to own one myself but it just isn't practicle for me.
As far as the rotary engines, they had a bad reputation from the old rx7 days but the fact is that it's a totally different motor,
rotary engines have very few moving parts to go wrong in teh first place and technology is much better now than in the 70's and 80's when the rx-7 was out.

Keep the oil changed, be adament about the maintenence schedule and I'm sure you'll love the car for years to come.

I know someone who owns an RX8. He and the car are both hot. What else matters?

OK that was stupid. sorry. sorry. jeez I said sorry.

You should just get a Corolla: cheaper; better gas mileage; lower insurance; longer lasting; true breath freshness; less maintainence.

ewww..corrola or RX8? hmm...i'll go with the RX8

cheaper does not mean better
i can afford to provide my thirsty ride with gas
i can afford the insurance
in 3 years i'll be a millionaire anyways lol
true breath freshness? i got nothing here
i'll be ok with the maintenance

Tiltinagain is right about the new rotary engines...they're far superior to the RX-7 and shouldn't be a problem for you as long as you treat it right. $25k is way overpriced...wait, is that in pounds or euros or yen or loonies or toonies or whatever the **** you use for currency in Canada? I'm pretty sure that a 2005 with 48k miles shouldn't be worth any more than $20k.

You really need to do more research...oh crap, those miles are in kilometers. Ok, 48k is fine. Anything under 50k km should be ok for you...but I'm sure there are plenty more in your area. Look online, call dealerships, etc. You'll be able to find out what you should be paying, and if you still want the one you saw today you can go to them with real negotiating power. Saying there are other similar models you can buy for much cheaper is a better negotiating tool than just saying "I'd rather pay this" and ending up splitting the difference. This is a huge purchase that you'll be using every day for many years, don't buy the first one you see without looking around.
FCP Bob
Make sure to take the car to a mechanic that you trust to check it out for any problems before you make any offer. This is a must when you're buying any used car.

Also make sure to see the Used Vehicle Information Package, in Ontario the dealer must show it to you. If the car has had a lot of owners or comes from out of Province those are warning signs and you should walk away.

Remember that any offer you make in writing is binding if they accept it so if there are any conditions on your offer make sure that they are also written down.

http://www.carhelpcanada.com/ is a service that you might find helpful in your search for a used car.

Have you considered a 350Z? I have no idea what the cost of living in London, Ontario is, but you could probably get a 2k5 with around 40-50k(m) for about 22-25k.

I love the Z. Your insurance will be a bit higher, but just look at this (2006)......

....I'd have secksual relationships with this car.

Well if he is looking for a new car than the Evo is out since the last model in America was the 06. If he is looking for used I would hesitate on getting an Evo unless I had that thing looked at with a fine tooth comb because many people would drive the crap out of that thing. I know I would.

The base model no frills 07 RX8 invoices at over $24K. So my guess, and it is just a guess, you aren't looking for the base model/no options and thus are shoving a ridiculous number at them that they surely would never except. If this is true, then that something that happens and you don't get it has to do with you and nobody esle. Just saying. If they put in an offer of 24K on a base/no options then you are looking good. That is still $2400 under MSRP and 400 under invoice.

So Gabe, did you go to one dealer?

Wife just picked up her new Civic last week. We went in, told them what we wanted, how much we wanted to pay. They gave us a number. We thanked them and told them we would contact them the next day after we thought about it. Then we called another Honda dealership and gave them all the info. They came back with a number that was lower. It worked out to be about $33 lower a month. Trouble was that we didn't want to use that dealership since it was about 70 miles away but we heard they had good deals. She called the first place, told them the skinny on the other quote, and they came back to us with a number that pretty much took $30/mo off their initial quote. They also stated that they though the place we checked after had not factored in the tax. We called and they were right, they gave us figures without tax. So the 1st place still hooked us up with a better deal.

You just can't walk into one place and be done with it. It's a game. One you better be ready to spend time on. When I got my GTI that night I was getting phone calls from Subaru and Acura giving me new deals for the WRX and RSX while I was sitting in the VW dealership getting counter offers from them. AS much as I am displeased with the service department at VW and their recent customer service issues, I got one hell of a deal by pitting them up against 2 other dealers.

They HATE HATE HATE HATE it, but they will compete if you MAKE MAKE MAKE them.
