waiting for the trip report
OK, the trip report.
First thing on the agenda was to get ready for the Iowa/PSU game. We flew in to Pittsburgh Friday and headed to ... Altoona? Closest hotel we could get and we learned that PSU home game weekend hotel reservations need to be made two years in advance, not two months. So we stayed at a hotel there and went to some generic sports bar and watched baseball and hockey games there, and ate and drank.
Saturday am, we went to tailgate at Beaver Stadium. Drinking, games, grilling, etc. Good times -- PSU fans are a fun group. Definitely recommend it to other visitors. Anyway, went to the game -- stadium is nice and we had tickets 15 rows up on the 30 yard line or so, behind the Hawkeyes. It was hot, but the sun went behind the stands in the first quarter, so that was a relief. Iowa sucks, and that wasn't a relief.
Western Pennsylvania is beautiful, BTW. Take the scenic route (allow a lot of time).
So after watching Penn State pound Iowa for the better part of a day, we left the stadium and embarked on a trip back to Pittsburgh. We stopped at a random Arby's along the way around 10 PM, and learned that good help must be hard to find in the hills. ("3rd Manager's comment to the girl-who-looked-like-she'd-been-shot-in-the-head-but-hadn't-when-she-hadn't-taken-any-of-the-15-people-in-lines'-orders: "If you ain't takin' orders, at least fill some!")
Naturally, none of the 15 of us had a properly-filled order within 30 minutes' time. But we met some more nice people and had a good time with it. We rolled through some really hilly country on a back road, and got into Pittsburgh around midnight, and watched the front-desk manager argue with some random worker there for about 15 minutes about where the roll-away beds were. Again with the bad help. That, too, was an interesting study in worker/manager incompetence.
Anyway, we get up early, I go for a run (they have this shit in Pittsburgh called "hills" that are unfamilar to me here), and head to "Station Square" then hop on the ferry, cross the river, head to "Ugly" and get a snack before the game. We sat in teh north end zone for the game, which you can imagine, was the hottest place in the stadium. Through a mild case of heat stroke, I manage to witness total Steeler domination.
We go back to Station Square via the ferry, then back to the hotel, shower and go out to another sports bar and watch Packers lose. More worker incompetence there, but not worth mentioning at this point. There was a Primanti's two door down from our hotel, but we didn't get to eat there. Which is a shame, because it was on my to-do list.
All in all, Beaver Stadium and Heinz Field are great football venues, the fans are great, and we had a good time.
