OK, this is crazy slow for the hockey forum, so time to start the new Senators thread....

Last news in Hockey Country is that Corey Clouston is the new B-Sens head coach.

Also, a few days ago, the Sens signed Luke Richardson. This is what Mirtle says, funny guy...

QUOTE
UPDATE Day 41, 29 teams are furious that Luke Richardson has signed in Ottawa.

The Richardson signing makes it interesting to see where he'll play this year. I think I really prefer having Nycholat as the 7th D in Ottawa and Richardson in Binghamton to be a leader for the yound d-men on the farm. It's still important to have a contingency plan when your d-men go down to injury, so we'll be good if any of the top 6 go down :

Redden - Schubert
Phillips - Volchenkov
Corvo - Meszaros
Nycholat
Richardson

With the off-season pretty much done now, we've got some cap space to work with this year, Murray has done well...

Oh yeah, and yesterday we signed Ilya Zubov.

Check out the TSN 2007 Cup run recap, some good vids there... (edit...guys let me know if you can link to the TSN vids cause I can't get to them ...)

Last, a shout out to 7s7c who has had a great sig up all summer...

GO SENS GO !!!

That rumour was repeated this morning on Team 1200 (seems like a huge long-shot to me though). The team would have clear some cap to make it happen though.

I think we knew Redden would have to take a cut to stay.. the question is whether or not they look to lowball him to "regain" past overpayment. I guess it would also depend on whether or not they think they can keep Corvo and/or how good Lee will be.

As a core player I'd probably put Fisher behind Spezz, Heatley and Alfie if not for health reasons. He had all of the keys to be a superstar power forward... except for hands of stone, perhaps if he learns not to bury the puck in the goaltender's chest. How much will make next year? Really depends on what happens to the salary cap imho but probably ~$3-4? mill. Given his community involvement might even give a discount but hopefully the Sens don't piss him off by pushing that too far.

Sens are siiiiickkk, id realy love to know where serge comes off talking shit? "they will struggle to make the playoffs" oh you mean kinda like the toronto maple leafs who have not been in the playoffs for over 3+ years now? great one serge! the sens are once again gonna be making serious noise in the Eastt. Send my good neighbour richardson ( beauty pad right on the waterhere in 0-town) down to Bingo to show the young lads what it takes to play in the show. Maybe give him a few games with the big guys too b.c. he deserves it for what hes done in the league. Forsberg would be a great pick up (Obviously) but that rumors been around for at least a month or two now. Rayzr and Gerber are getting geared up for what looks to be a good battle for top spot in the net. With emerys performance last year he can start slow and gerber can come out red hot and I still think emery will have the benefit of the doubt, (at least until halfway point in season)

Oh. yeah. Foppa in a Sens jersey would be awesome. There have only been 2 times when he was available, as an UFA to Philly after the lockout and then traded to Nashville last year. Each time, I was hoping we'd pick him up, but both times we had no cap space and couldn't really make a serious pitch. I'm sure Muckler tried to make it work though, he just didn't leak the rumor to the press like Murray did this time icon_biggrin.gif

Now this year, I think Forsberg will probably return to the league sometime just after Christmas, which would be pretty much at the midway point of the season, so the cap hit would probably work. He can come back to win a last Cup with his friend Alfie !

This is only if he does not absolutely want the most $$$, in that case he would come back for the last week of training camp and earn an entire season's worth of salary. There's no doubt he's worth 6M$, but the only teams that have that kind of cap space left aren't really top contenders.

I can't wait for the first marquee veteran free agent to choose Ottawa as an UFA. Forsberg would be great.

Fisher is the key guy. If there's one player this team needs, it's Fisher...

The whole thing is how much does Redden value 6M$ vs. the chance of winning the Cup with the Sens. That's the difference between 4.5M$ for 3 years (which we can afford), or 6.5M$ for 3 years that he'd get on the open market IF he had a good season this year. I can only think of one guy who accepted the same kind of paycut as an UFA-to-be, and that's Brind'Amour. But he's quite a bit older than Redden...

Yes, Fisher is a key piece. He plays some huge shutdown minutes, he allows Spezza's line and the 2nd line to match up a lot better. His chemistry with Neil (last year) and Schaefer (NOT last year) was very good, I'm looking forward to seeing who will play on their wing this year...McAmmond ? He's also very quick to lead the rush and is relentless on the backpressure - he would already have won a Selke had he had a single season 100% healthy. Yeah guys, I agree now that Getzlaf > Fisher, but I'm still adamant that Mike Fishers are not a dime a dozen in the league.

Yes simple math...Ottawa's lineup from last year is actually worse and the Leafs lineup from last year is a LOT better...what part of that is flawed?

They will have the inevitable let down from last years finals loss...Ottawa last year had 14 more pts than the Leafs....The Leafs are much better in goal...The Leafs are WAY better on d...Overall top 9 forwards the Leafs are better...The only category the Sens are better this year is top 3 forwards..Leafs are deeper at forward ..

These are basic principles and it will play out on the ice...

OK here's why your logic is flawed. Let's say we grade each team from last year's performance.

The Sens plowed through Pittsburgh, New Jersey and Buffalo in 15 games last spring. Eastern Conference Champions. Their record from Christmas to the end of the season was the best in the league, they lost only like 13 games including the playoffs. They have the 2 best forwards in the division and arguably the best line in the league. They have good speed, size and skill on the blue line, the shutdown pairing is rock solid. Goaltending is not an issue, Emery is a gamer. So they get a 92% grade for last season.

The Leafs did not make the playoffs. I won't get into the specifics as to why they are a second tier team because I know Serge you will glorify all your players later today in a über-post. I'll keep my ranting for later. But, since they did not make the playoffs, they do not get a passing grade, so let's say 59%.

Now, the Sens did not add anybody and they did lose Priessing, Comrie and Schaefer. These three will be replaced by Schubert, Hennessy and Donovan. Slight downgrade. So they slip from 92% to say 89%.

Now the Leafs have added Blake, Toskala and Bell. OK, sure, the depth chart does look a bit better as guys fall into roles much more suited to their skill level, but Antropov - Ponikarovski - Stajan - Steen - Battaglia - Tucker - Devereaux would not have as much ice time with 90% of the teams in the league. But, yes, they are improved, let's say a full 20% for arguments sake (yes, Toskala > Raycroft). That puts them at 79%.

So...you say...the Leafs have improved and the Sens have not therefore the Leafs are now better than the Sens.

Now, since :

Ott = 92% - 3% = 89% > Tor = 59% + 20% = 79%

------> Ott > Tor

Your logic is flawed...CQFD

Ok, enough of this posting more in the Leafs thread than in mine here...

Well, the Sens are tied 3-3 with the Caps tonight...looking forward to the highlights later...

Gerber is back !!! 52-save shutout to start the pre-season on Tuesday...nice ! I really like Emery's game, don't get me wrong, but I've always been one to defend Gerber all the way through last year. I will never forget the 2-0 shutout against team Canada in Turin. You do not lose those kind of skillz overnight.

Can't wait to watch my first Sens game...October 3rd baby ! I can't believe I've already watched 2 Habs games though icon_confused.gif

I'm watching the game tonight. Whoever is announcing the game is a cure for insomnia.

LOL...the Leafs can't ever beat the Sens anymore...

Senators 4, Maple Leafs 3, OT

TORONTO (AP) -Patrick Eaves scored 53 seconds into overtime to help the Ottawa Senators beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 on Monday night.

Christoph Schubert added two goals for Ottawa, which is 4-0 in the preseason. Dany Heatley scored the other goal for the Senators.

Mats Sundin, John Pohl and Alexei Ponikarovsky scored for the Leafs (2-1-2).

With the game tied 3-3 in overtime, Jason Spezza stickhandled around Pavel Kubina on the left wing and slid a cross-crease pass to Eaves, who shovelled it past Andrew Raycroft.

Sundin opened the scoring at 1:21. Jason Blake passed from behind the net and Sundin, positioned between the circles, beat goaltender Martin Gerber on the glove side.

Ottawa jumped ahead with two goals in 29 seconds. Schubert ripped a slap shot from the circle to the right of Raycroft that went over the kneeling goalie's left shoulder at 10:49, and Heatley emerged from behind the net to the left of Raycroft to stickhandle around Bryan McCabe and sweep a shot into the far side of the net at 11:18.

Schubert made it 3-1 at 10:35 of the second period when he whipped a wrist shot from the circle to the left of Raycroft into the far side of the net.

Toronto answered with goals by Pohl and Ponikarovsky to tie the game.

Oh, I don't know, just about 24 less than the Leafs have dropped to the Sens the last 2 years...
SilverSeven
All right, can't wait for this to get underway...GO SENS GO !!!

Please boys, let's win this one so I don't have to hear Serge harping about how the Leafs are (already ?!?) the 2008 Stanley Cup Champs...

ZOMG, Serge is guaranteeing something will happen...wow that's something new...

Whatever happened to the good old "I think..." or "I hope..." ?

Then you wonder why people get annoyed with you...
SilverSeven
This just in...Heatley signs a 6-year contract extension

WOOOOOOOOOOOOT !!!!!!!!!!!

All in all a great hockey game tonight...Heater celebrates his new contract with 2 huge clutch goals.

Redden dropping the mitts twice was awesome...he really looked like a warrior with the blood gushing down his forehead there.

I agree with Zach, that was not the Sens A game tonight...

How about Phillips denying Sundin the Leafs all-time goal scoring record by putting the puck in himself ? lol, he's on a 2-game goal-scoring streak into our net !

Those new jerseys look slick in game action. I like the red numbers a lot more than the old black ones.
Fenxis
In a post signing interview with Murray he all but admits that Redden won't be back next year -- as specifically mentions Spezza, Vermette, Eaves, Kelly and "other" UFAs.
Fenxis
And that's two in a row!!!

(at least Sundin got a goal to help with some of Serge's bets).

I was up in Ottawa today for the New Jersey - Sens game. Nice to be back at the SBP for the first time this season.

Good game, another win, another huge performance from the best line in the league. And Gerber is playing very, very well in net. This team is on a mission...

LOL Serge it must be sooo hard being a Sens-hater...and take that stupid statement out of your sig...
SilverSeven
Got to catch up with the board, I've got some unread threads on page 2...but hey, been busy lately...

Just got back from Ottawa for the Habs-Sens game tonight...good game, Price looks really solid to me - hehe I still enjoyed that softie 31 seconds in...makes it fun to get the thrash talk going with the buddies early...

Obv happy with the win, good thing the Sens scored right after Kovalev tied it...man I was just livid about that penalty call on Donovan there...booing the refs is fun at an NHL game lol...I was genuinely pissed there for like 30 seconds until Spezza put it in...

Vermette out with back spasms after like 3 mins...damn, bad for the yahoo pool...but those 3 games in the next 17 days (?!?) will sure help with those aches and pains...

Well, I'm out for now...cheers all...
Fenxis
Sweet.. I was at the game as well -- unfortunately we were sitting in middle of the Habs area (though I guess in many ways it made the game more fun!)
SilverSeven
The Sens are 9 - 1.

That is all...
