Hello is anyone home? Hows my are you Euros doing?

I'm at work right now, so I can't play any poker sad.gif

My year has been kind to me at PLO so far... I hope variance forgets to give me my inevitable SUPER DOWNSWNG.

This place is pretty dead.

bdc is on holiday in Florida. I heard he prefers bingo to poker nowadays.

Simo has quitted PLO. He is playing tournies and NLHE cash games. I heard he prefers anything to PLO nowadays.

Iggy is busto again. I think we have a couple of months before he somehow starts playing again , builds a decent roll , swears to stick to BR management and eventually goes busto again. And a couple of months after that he somehow starts playing again , builds a decent roll...

I am still playing PLO. Will try to be at 100PLO by the end of the month.

How ya doin'

I'm doing good. I'm very busy in my non-poker life right now, so I won't be around too much for the next 3 weeks (or so). After that time my workload will be reduced from 'insanely busy' to 'still quite busy'. I will post an update on where I've been etc. later (after my life slows down). I am thinking of starting a blog, but that *definitely* won't happen until later this month or possibly in March.

The 5 minute bottom line is that after a *severe* downswing last summer (I went from posting a +$5,000 net profit to a +$100 net profit in the span of two days), I decided to withdraw my remaining money from pokerstars and take a break from online poker (although I still played live poker).

This year, I decided to rebuild a bankroll on pokerstars following some strict rules.

Rules:
1) I will not redeposit (at all).
2) I will follow strict bankroll guidlines: I will maintain a minimum of 40 buyins for my current level at all times.
-----i) I will step up whenever I have 50 buyins for the next level
-----ii) I will step down whenever I have <40 buyins for the current level *or* had an unbroken 10 buyin downswing
3) In order to step up to the next level, I must have (aside from the minimum buy-in requirements listed in rule #2)
-----i) A minimum of 10,000 hands at my current level (I expect to need a *vast* amount of hands more than this to meet my strict bankroll requirements)
-----ii) A PokerEV graph with a positive slope for my SB and total winnings lines (obviously, I have to be sure I am beating my current level and it is not attributed to luck)
-----iii) I have a positive ROI on my PT stats for my current level (this one is obvious and goes hand in hand with the PokerEV rule)

I know that my bankroll guidelines are strict, but the downswing that caused me to swear off online poker for half a year was a 10 buy-in downswing that I should have been able to fade if I had been playing within my roll (instead of playing at 2/4 and 3/6 PLO). My above rules give me the following bankroll ranges per level:

Level / Bankroll range:

1c/2c ....... $0 -- $250
2c/5c ....... $200 -- $500
5c/10c ..... $400 -- $1,250
10c/25c ... $1,000 -- $2,500
25c/50c ... $2,000 -- $5,000
50c/$1 ..... $4,000 -- $10,000
$1/$2 ....... $8,000 -- $20,000
$2/$4 ....... $16,000 -- $30,000
$3/$6 ....... $24,000 -- $40,000

The overlap between each level is due to the fact that I won't step up a level until I have 50 buyins for the next level, and won't step back down until I'm back down to <40 buy-ins, giving me a 10 BI shot at each level.

Following these rules, I should have been playing 50c/$1 PLO when my downswing hit last summer (instead or $2/$4) and it would have only been a -$1,000 to -$1,200 loss (after which time I would have stepped back down to 25c/50c and would have still had ~80 buy-ins for that level!) instead of the -$5,000 loss I ended up experiencing.

So what's my progress so far?

I started this year with $0.00 in my account, but had thousands of FPPs (even after using some to buy a *sweet* IPod Touch 16GB). I used these to play the 70 FPP Sunday Hundred Grand sit and gos, where I booked ~6 wins before I finally grew bored of them. I then played $3 sit and gos (PLO H/L, PLO, and even some HORSE and NLHE) where I had a roughly 1:1 ROI (I'm no sit and go guy, so this was more than enough for my needs). That gave me around $50 (I forgot to withdraw from one of the Sunday Hundred Grands, which wasted 11 $T) to start my climb out of the *BUSTED* abyss.

I switched over to 1c/2c PLO, where I have so far played ~5,000 hands and posted ~30 ptBB/100 hand ROI (these games are *soft* tongue.gif). I am currently sitting with ~$130 on stars.

Wow... this "short" post took longer than I thought. Oh well, now you guys know my online absence, and my current poker plan.

Cheers,
Merby

Good luck Merby.

50 buyins to move up seems a bit too many tho , doesn't it?

I mean if you are willing to move down , move up when you have 40 buyins , take a 10 buyin shot and even if you lose that 10 buyin you will still have 60 buyins for the lower level.

Thanks, Bud.

I agree that this will keep me "comfortably over-rolled", but that will just translate into moving up in limits at a slower pace, which is fine.

So far, the benefits have vastly out-weighed the slower pace. I have noticed tilt to be nonexistent -- I need only look at my SB graph to remind myself that it will all work out in the long run and that with this many buy-ins, the probability of busting out is negligable (assuming positive SB graph). I will post my PokerEV graph for the year later today (I am at work right now... procrastinating).

Cheers,

Here's my year so far. So far, it has been smooth sailing
(although I'm looking forward to being on the positive side of variance some time this year...)

bdc's back from bingo in the sunshine...lol
Had to drop to $25 for several reasons, but I'm feeling good, and playing good and I'm gonna keep it going and hopefully be back to $50 by the end of the month.

The tables were good tonight. Here's a hand that played itself. Just in case you're concerned that I may lose the villain by the non-stop potting, my notes on him were to the point:

DO NOT BLUFF

In other words, he calls down extremely light and plays his hands passively.

I think your turn bet should be bigger, so your river bet can be bigger.

As played, I think your river bet should definitely be bigger.

I don't hate your flat call on the river, although I do think there is value in shoving.

Tried to represent a scared flush on turn and river. I was trying to get raised so i could call turn/Cr river or call turn/bet river or push or play with them however i want. Then i got raised and just called "knowing" i am beat.

Well, I have been sticking to my plan and am moving up to 2c/5c PLO. Here's the post outlining my plan.

It took just over 13,000 hands to increase my online bankroll from ~$60 to $250.
I pulled in a 33 BB/100 hand average win rate during this level.

Next step: 5 and 6-table 2c/5c to grow my bankroll to $500.

simo_8ball
I thought NLHE was supposed to be lower variance than PLO?

Prima stats for $50nl:

Hands Played: 700
Lost: 11 buyins.
Most won in a hand: $17

Sighaments. I'd just started playing $100nl on FT too. Now I'm going to need to drop to $50nl again.

Might try some of the PLO games on Prima. I expect they will be pretty aggro.

Wow, that's nuts. Running bad, playing bad, or both?

I haven't played much the past few days. (job getting in the way)

Party Poker sent $125 bonus for some reason so I'm gonna see if I can work that in to something. They have plo there, but full ring, which is hard to get used to again after playing 6max for so long. A lot of limping and nut peddling going on at full ring....lol

A lot of the marginal ones were fairly justified with prior reads and stats (imo). Any thoughts? Consider that in these games you get bluffraised a fair amount, and players are generally just really weird postflop.

I really think I'm playing generally pretty well, and I think I've just been running as bad as is possible. Just kinda sucks that PokerEV doesn't work for prima.

I've lost >$10 on 26 hands, and won >$10 on 6.
I've lost >$15 on 18 hands, and won >$15 on 4.
I've lost >$20 on 11 hands, and won >$20 on 1 (and that was a massive $22 win).

I like this thread. I feel like I'm allowed to rant about NL here because I started it. smile.gif

In the main hand, can/should I give him credit for a straight there given he checked the flop? I have two blockers for a straight, and I do have an overpair+flush draw to back up the bluff. I think he folds a naked 2 pair to a shove, and I'm beating a draw or a bluff anyway.

If shoving is bad (ok it probably is), just how bad is it?

*sigh* It was one of "those" days:

I admit that I started tilting... but come on! There is a ~600 ptbb discrepancy between my equity and my outcome over 1500 hands (that's 12 buy-ins ENTIRELY due to variance). I posted the graph in BB because it underscores the size of the variance I experienced. Thankfully, this is only 2c/5c, so this is only an actual loss of $88.

Here's one sample hand:

When the SB check-raised me, I started to think I might be free-rolled... I'm glad I was wrong (I can't understand how he checkraises w/o the nuts or a super draw, but I'm glad he does). It would have been nice to dodge a diamond, but I can't complain...

It was another one of those ... "negative variance" days.

It would cost less if I tilted less (I'm still working on that).

It's only $60, but this is all at 2c/5c, so that is 6 double buy-ins of variance

What a day...dropped 4 buyins -- just glad it was at 25 instead of 50. wee for proper br-aments

It's hands like this that Pokerstars should have a Bad Beat Jackpot but I doubt they ever will.

Normally for omaha, you need straight flush over straight flush to qualify for a BBJ, although I haven't played in a omaha game that had a BBJ in a *long* time, so I could be remembering the minimum qualifying requirements incorrectly.
Shark527
That would be difficult but would probably build a pretty big jackpot in between hits. I thought it would just be quads over quads minimum qualifying.

Honestly, I don't remember... I know it varies from place to place, but you may be right on average.

Well at least there are some fish at the next level, good to know. I mean TTT9, 2778, and JJ26 (calling 3-bet!?!?). ohmy.gif icon_eek.gif

Edit: Just realized the JJ26 hand was double suited, so that makes it...
