When dealt a hand like 3456J I have been tossing the 6(along with the J of course) on the first draw. Is this the correct play?

That's a hard one to play, if it's not raised yes, if raised think of folding.

of course if you're in the BB and get raised it's worth a shot though (drawing the J and 6 most likely)

I really hate playing hands without both a 2 or a 7 in it. If you are in the blinds, you should probalby draw 2.

Maybe but I'm apt to toss it.

if you decide to play a hand like 3456, you MUST play it aggressively so it looks like a good one card draw. if any semi-competent player sees you go passive and then draw one, s/he will know that you're drawing thin to a bad 8 and make you pay for it.
for the record, i often open raise this hand from the button or CO and toss it everywhere else. if an aggressive but good player raises me and i have 3456, i 3bet and draw one, hoping to push them off on later draws.
