Add the blinds and anties for 1 round, and divide into your stack.

M is how many rounds of poker you can last in a tourney, ante's included. Let's say a brief example would be you are 8-handed and blinds are 200/400 with a 50 chip ante. You have a 8k stack. You have a m of 8 because each round of play will cost you 1000 chips.

"M" is a code letter and name for the head of the British Secret Intelligence Service.
... oh and it is also what litlebullet said

Once you finishing reading HOH 1&2, reread them.

Harrington initially destroyed my game. I played tight until I got fairly short, then shoved any two cards from any position.
It took me a while to come back around.

The concept was actually coined by Paul Magriel, the guy with the weird nose who goes "quack quack" all the time. That is why it is "M".
Wikipedia entry on M-ratio is informative.

M is an extremely valuable tournament concept that gives you a broad idea of how you should be playing your stack relative to the blinds. It has improved my tournament game immensely.

So, I typed "poker M" into google and got a wikipedia page as the #4 hit.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M-ratio Everything you need to know about M is in there. It took me less time to find and read that page than it would to log in here and post the question. I don't mind people asking obvious questions...I'm just wondering why people don't spend 10 seconds trying to figure something out for themselves before they start a new thread that's been started a dozen times already.

I do get your point, but I don't have a real issue with the OP. It is a Poker Forum and (unlike so many posts) this is a valid Poker question - however basic it may be for some of us. Yeah, "search is your friend", but at least the guy is polite and just looking to start a discussion.

Yeah, mostly I'm just being grumpy. His post at least gave me some fodder for my mid-week work avoidance. Just seems like laziness that instead of typing it into google, he posts the question and I type it into google for him. M is a ratio of stack to blinds, OP is lazy, I'm a grumpy curmudgeon, and Potodds is the voice of reason. That about sum it up?

I was on FCP in different forums, and realized that I kept seeing "m" and had no idea what it was. So i came here and posted, and continued trolling. If you're at safeway and need a soda, do you go to the gas station to buy one? Give me a break.
