Just saw this movie last night and I was pretty impressed. I mean, it had a good bit of the typical horror movie tricks and cliches, but I'm a little cynical when it comes to horror movies too, so its probably even better than I thought. It actually did have a few "jump" moments and did kinda make you think a little, which is what a good thriller has to do. Also, it has Samuel L. Jackson in it and he was good, and there were actually a few laughs which was really surprising to me (not big laughs per se, but you know).
I recommend it. Anybody else seen it? Am I an idiot?

I thought it was a great movie, and I want to see it again. Best part of the movie was actually not in the movie itself. Some "thuggish" guy next to me jumped about 10 feet out of his seat at the 1st "scare scene".

You guys are fcking idiots. This movie was not good.
Ok, that was harsh. You guys just have no taste. But the movie kinda sucked. I had high hopes, don't get me wrong. I love me some Cusack but the story was weak, some of the graphics weren't good, the trickeration with the ending was silly, the manufactured relationship with the daughter was bad. They tried to get you to feel for his pain with the daughter out of the blue. Nothing was established before hand.
One or three good "scary, make me jump" moments, but then again, I'm easy.

I didn't really think it was that great, it was a decent way to waste an afternoon...however the part when SMJ got pissed about Cusack taking the liquor bottle and not relenting on going in was awesome.

at least I can spell f
ucking. lazy ba
stard.
what do you mean nothing was established about the daughter beforehand? there were at least like 3 specific scenes about her getting sick and what they were going through and whatnot. were you in the bathroom during those? (no, I will not resort to a mcdonalds joke about you leaving to get chicken nuggets. wait, maybe I just did. sorry.) And as far as the story goes, I mean, its a horror movie. There ain't but so much strength you can put into a horror movie plot. I just liked the fact that it was a ghost story but it was mainly all psychological (ie, all in his head). that was what was scary, the fact that none of it was really happening (or was it? creepy end of movie john cusack stare). I don't know, if you didn't like it, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
now go get your fu

Nope
one or two good "jump" scenes, Cusack being a wise guy, and that was about it. I give it a C at best.
Now dance Spida, ya little fuck

Love it or hate it film... I had zero expectations going to see this movie, last minute decision to go out tonight. I'm glad I did as I infact loved the movie.
Ron, there was a ton of scenes leading up to the scene with his daughter, four that I can recall after seeing it tonight. I had goosebumps throughout myself and I thought Cusack did an incredible job acting. Everyone coming out of the theater seemed shocked and I heard a lot of "Damn that was good" response.
Overall a good movie, I'd give it an B+
Would've got an A but I do agree the visuals for the ghosts/objects disappearing before hitting the ground could've been done better. I know it was intentional but I think in todays standards they should've put more $ in to it.

I know they showed a couple of scenes with the daughter, but trying to get us to relate to him losing his daughter and being tearful seemed like a stretch, to me. Not saying I'm right. I'm just a little more cynical and I would've liked to have seen a deeper bond between the two before I'm asked to weep for her. I just don't like when they put scenes in a movie that are designed to get a reaction from emotional women.

Rented this movie tonight and I really like it. I'm much more into suspense or psychological horror than "boogotcha" type horror. It takes so much more craftsmanship in storytelling to make a good horror movie where the scare comes from inside your head than from a cat jumping out of the trash can etc.
I thought the daughter bit was handled well. They expose too much too early and it's like a Wayne's World "that'll be important later" shtick. We learn gradually why he didn't believe in anything and why the room chose to expose that flaw in his psyche and why it should break him.

I like the Blockbuster online. If you watch a lot of movies it works out to a little over a buck per movie each month and follow a plan.
The plan I have is 2 mailed rentals at a time. The online movies are old ones that I haven't seen for a long time and I'm trying to decide if I want to add a copy of them to my dvd collection. Then each Tuesday I return the mailed movies and previous week's rentals to the store and exchange the mailed movies for new releases. Tuesday is the day the new releases hit the shelves and if you don't go on that day you'll end up waiting a month or more to get a copy. Also you get one coupon per month for a free rental.
2 mail movies
+
2 new releases for dropoff
X
4 weeks = 16
+ 1 coupon rental = 17.
So all told I'm getting 17 movies a month for about 20 bucks or about $1.18 per movie.

BBO can suck my ass. I had it. It was crap. Pure crap. They never had any of the movies at the warehouse and I would get movies 15th, 16th, and 18th in my 80+ queue for months even though everything ahead of it said "available". Trouble was it was never available at my warehouse and according to BBO it would NEVER be available so essentially I would never get to see the movies I wanted too. The ability to drop off the movies at the store was great expect none of the top 50 movies I had in the queue were not available at any of the 5 stores around me, thus I was stuck getting stupid mainstream crap. So I ditched it and got Netflix. Signed up, put the top three movies on my BBO queue into my Netflix queue and in 2 days had all three movies. I got two movies this week in 2 days even though the queue said short wait. And once, a movie I had in the queue was not available at my warehouse they sent me an email asking if they could send it from another and I would have to wait 1-2 more days for it or take the next one in the queue. That right there makes them miles ahead of the game. BBO is great if you stick to your basic everyday video rental, for the most part. But if you want off the beaten path movies, Netflix is better. Some of the rentals i could never get from BBO or from BB...Scrubs seasons 3 and 4, few horror movies, some older classics.
Anyway, don't know how exclusive 1408 is to BB but I got it from Netflix yesterday and it was enjoyable. The only issue is that it seemed they had a hard time trying to end it as it started to drag and get a little stupid, but entertaining nonetheless.

this movie really didn't do it for me. Seems like there is way to much hype around this movie in this thread.
