Sometimes I just call down here.

Other times I will 3 bet, esp since we have the gutshot to back it up.

why wouldn't utg cap the turn if he beats us there? If he doesn't, does that mean we should 3-bet the river?

I think villains line shows quite a bit of strength and 3-betting the river would be a spew. I think OP played the hand good.

I play it the exact same way.

Calling down with trips out of fear of a 2-card straight heads up seems way too weak.
I 3bet this turn every time.
Even without our Gut Shot.

Villain may be calling the turn raise with the nuts so he can pop the river again.
Or he may be waiting to see a non-coordinated river card before thinking his lesser trips (JT, etc) are good.

I consider 3betting the river as well.
But calling down is likely more prudent.

I feel 3betting the river would be a bit on the spewey side. He flat calls my turn 3bet and repops me on the river: basically on the turn I told him I have a J or better, and on the river he's telling me "ok, but I got wayyyyyyyyy better than just a J."
