I would check the turn, as you did, with the intention of snapping off a bluff on teh river...if you think he would fold like the 7 of spades, then a turn bet is appropriate, but if he's calling with ANY SPADE< you need to check the turn and call the river...if he checks twice, I would still probably check as other than three queens there is very little he can call you with that doesn't beat you...
