Finally got 90% of the hurricane shutters down. Was justifying leaving them up because it looked like we might get more there for a bit, but then I just procrastinated. Just have one window left that I'll need a ladder to get. Think the job qualified as a decent workout.

The math tutoring center was decently involved this week. I got in a bit of trouble for not getting my availability in again in a timely manner. The issue is that that the owner used to have us get them in by Saturday. The new center director wants them in by Tuesday in order to put out the next week's schedule on Thursday (which then has to be intialed by Friday). Anyway, the first time around I got mine updated on a Thursday...did two weeks...then forgot about it until another Thursday. The director said she'd told me multiple times in e-mail. The problem is that 95% of e-mails that I get are garbage, and I generally only check it once per week or when I'm specifically expecting something. That's been the case for years...so I guess I have to break that habit.

Looking forward to some pokering the next few days.

Why didn't they just buy it on an exchange? (maybe a dumb question, I don't understand "things in general")
As thera said, a lot of the exchanges have limits for various levels of verification and can sometimes take a little while even then. I have a $15k/week limit on Coinbase for instance, and I've submitted a good bit of documentation...I put in an order to buy BTC from them on Monday, but I won't get it until Saturday. As time was of the essence in their case and they needed it over a weekend, they opted to pay a premium.

My understanding is that some ransomwares don't have any intention or ability to give you your data back. Paying them off seems kinda silly unless you legitimately were totally unprepared and have no backups. In which case, I guess it's your best bet.
That was my concern when hearing the story, but they apparently got their data back. They had screwed up on back-ups.

Story's here:

What the **** are you doing with that much bitcoin though.
Also as thera said, I got into Bitcoin years ago because it seemed like another reasonable avenue for playing poker online, and it has been. Got fortunate with the timing. I actually only had around 3btc, which is another reason I initially declined, but I had positions in about a dozen others that all added up to the remainder...took quite a few hours to put them all back into BTC.

Colby gambles with it in place of dollars. It just gets converted when you play USD tournies. And BTC only shot up relatively recently. Shit, I think I ran up like 7 coins just in their casino, but I cashed it out for like 3k. Woops!

We had a municipality around here get in a similar situation a couple years ago, and they paid. You gotta realize how small-time most local government is.
I plays on Seals too...which is Bitcoin only. And yeah, at one brief point back when it was like $20, I had 90. =/

So it was an interesting crypto weekend. A friend called me Friday and asked if I had 9btc available to sell to a friend of his. His friend worked for a county government revenue office that got hit by ransomware. They needed 9btc by Monday morning. As of that time, it was about $3750/btc and thus worth around $34k - not an easy amount to obtain on short notice. Anyway, told him I wasn't really looking to sell...that I could do $1.2k. On Saturday, they offered to pay me $5k/btc. That offer was too sweet to turn down, so I liquidated 90% of my entire crypto portfolio over the next day and found the full amount. Have spent the past few days trying to then buy back in...which I've almost completed. BTC went up a smidge in the meantime but fairly inconsequential. Sadly my second heaviest crypto decided to randomly jump 25%, so that's irritating. Anyway, was still a decent pickup for a weekend.

Since we're talking TV a little in here, I highly recommend I'm Sorry on TruTV. Really funny.
