  1. THAT is the absolute truth. I've played as small as .10/.25 online and as big as $150/$300 live and I swear, it SEEMS there are times when the dime/quarter game plays better than the big one. But, the key word here is "seems". No matter what limit you're playing, mistakes are made and people are jerks and others are great people who can be trusted with anything. But it takes awhile to get into a groove against the other key players, so while at first glance it seems insane that a guy just called down with K hi and caught a card at the river in a 300/600 game, but one never knows the histor
  2. that may have been it, it was a while ago, I just know it was him. The icon had the Tenessee logo. I had no idea, of course, until after it was all over and stars had his info up on the bio. But it was a little surreal.
  3. This is interesting and very helpful, good luck.I tried a similar thing on stars two years ago with the intent of buying into the WSOP witha stake of $1. The plan being, run the $1 up to $6, play a single table, cash, etc.... after several attempts at smaller satellites I was finally forced to take my remaining $700 and jump in a $660 wsop satellite. I made it to the final table, but got bounced on the short stack when 99 ran into QQ. The punchline to that story is that it was the winner had a screen name of "Money777". Seriously. So, it can definitely be done. But, if you make it try tak
  4. making the slow play here with AA is only going to work if you can play the hand absolutely accurately after the flop. But, either way, it just seems like too much of a price to pay in a tournament. A guy flops a pair gets nailed to it and then runs down his 5 outs and now you're out of the tournament. If this happens in a cash game, not only can you rebuy but you also get the added value of the impression that you could literally be limping in with any two cards. This can get you some free looks and your raises will be taken with some confusion. Either way, I don't limp in with AA in a
  5. no kidding... he's bled off about 4k in 20 minutes.
  6. are you talking about live or online? Live I've played in a relatively small, like $1000 buy-in 10/10 pot limit hold 'em game in LA with Amir Vahedi and David Levi from time to time. Usually though, at least in LA, most of them aren't playing much lower than $50/100 or so. There's an ongoing 300/600 or 400/800 game that rotates between the Bicycle, Commerce and sometimes the Hustler which is a mix game, usually H.O.R.S.E. Daniel, Brunson, Lyle Berman, Ted Forrest and those guys play a huge mixed game in Vegas with a $100,000 cap per card.Online, I really don't know anyones names other tha
  7. I don't know about software driven auto rating, but something I do right after sitting down is starting to put players into basic categories: "seat one: ABC, seat two: new and timid, seat three: vet, seat four: maniac" etc... then I basically keep myself sensitive to changes in their moods and adjust as they do. If you put those notes into players notes, like " 3 maniacs, 3 abc, 2 new kids, 3 vets over the course of the session" you can see the kinds of games you do better in. You might be surprised. For a long time I thought I didn't handle maniacs well, but over the long haul they made
  8. I started working with Pokercharts.com last night, and it's great. I can give you the one I have if you need it, but try that. I'm going to that now that the new year is here and I'm starting over
  9. next time you go email Lou Krieger at Card Player. He plays out there.
  10. a pair with a flush draw is basically stone even money against just a big pair. You add the straight draw there and I think you're actually a big favorite. In a cash game I make this call every time, Tourney wise, it's a gut call.
  11. I have a very basic excel spreadsheet that I just reset for most of the year. I'll post it up or email it to you if you want. You have to enter amt won or lost and the hours you play. It calculates your earnings, hours and hourly rate for each month and for the year.I have no idea how to post something up here though, so I may need to email it to you.
  12. I believe that in order for the health of tv tournament poker, WSOP has to stay at 10k. The more people, the bigger the odds of an amateur winning and the better the story. There are other tours for huge buy in events to happen, and the WSOP itself is weeks and weeks long - plenty of time for the top players to pick up a bracelet here and there. But the key marketing tool for the WSOP is "Anyone Can Win". Invitationals, sponsored events and all that stuff is made for the pros, but the event itself needs to be accessible to the masses. Kind of like what the US Open is to the PGA.
  13. The knowledge isn't about card theory and odds - that's the stuff that makes solid players. The knowledge is about having played so many hundreds of thousands of hands under such a variety of circumstances that the pro starts to recognize definable patterns in everyone's behavior - his/her own included, that they're able to rely on their insticts because they know they've fed them enough over the years to be dependable. A great quote applies to this in a discussion about whether or not Michael Jordan was the greatest "athlete" of our time. The guy, and it might have been Bob Costas, said he
  14. I was taught card games, mostly gin and cribbage but some poker and bridge, to count, add, subtract etc... from as long as I can remember. I started playing poker a lot more seriously when I moved to LA in the late 80's, but got side tracked for about 10 or 12 years doing other things. I came back to it in 2000 or so and have been at it seriously again ever since. As a kid I'd literally draw up bracket sheets and leagues for literally anything and would make up sports to teach the neighbor kids. It was all kind of an extension of learning to play games before I knew how to read. I played
