If 2nd place was the one getting paid, then to "win" the tournament you would have to get to heads up, and then purposely lose. Poker is defined by winning money...if 1st place doesn't get any money, then that's not a "win". You just gotta djust to the payouts and play accordingly...even if that means losing on purpose...becasue believe me, that takes skill too
