how do college kids fund their poker play? i know most college kids lose a lot of money online, and i think a good percentage of online players are college kids, so where do they get their money from? my first instincts is parents, but me being in college, i work around 8-10 hrs a week and i use that money to play, wat about you guys?

Why is this in the strategy section?Oh well, I'll answer the question anyway. I deposited $50 from my bank account and never went broke, so I never needed any more cash to play.

My dad gave me $100 to start playing online. He gets 20% of what I make.

I was kind of like that, nearly going broke a few times, but I went to an online poker forum (not this one though) and learned about bankroll management. I'm a little short of $1000 right now playing pretty low limits. I might have been able to make more, but I've become increasingly interested in limit over the past few months and the money made there is way less than in NL (at least for me). That and...I'm not terribly good at limit and am trying to get better. I don't play very much either because of other obligations in college. That probably helps me because I don't go on long tilting sessions since I don't have time to.My situation is probably a little different from yours though. My parents are kind of against playing for money, so I promised them if I went broke with the $50, I wouldn't deposit again. So far, so good.

The forum was wptfan.com. If you are looking to visit another forum besides this one, I'd recommend it. The veterans of that site are mostly NL specialists though, they aren't as smart as some of the guys are here about limit. Some are pretty good at razz and other games, but as a whole they are a great forum to visit to improve your NL game. This forum is probably better to improve you limit game. Many of them consistently place high in $100-$500 online tourneys and of the like, so I guarentee they know what they are doing. They also like playing at Full Tilt, which you will hear is one of the toughest sites to play at. Andy Block runs the site and Matt Matros (3rd place at the WPT championship in 2004) visits it frequently.

I have a job that I work like about 25 hours a week. But most of my bankroll comes from the money I've made playing in games around campus (especially one at a friend's dorm-- I've made about $450 the past 3 times I've played there...with a 10 dollar buy in I think that's pretty good...)

I built a bankroll off the fish here in small ($10-$20) NLHE games where I'd almost always double up at the end of the day. That netted me about $200 to go online with.

I deposited $20 at my site, played a lot of .05/.10 NL until I built up a few hundred, and never went broke.

I cash out to often to get a roll going.I usually put in 50-100 at a time cash out about 300 and then stop playing till I get another 50 to drop in.I basically need poker money to help support my spending habits. I think I would do quite well playing if I didn't need to get this or that. This past time someone ganked my MP3 player out of my car so I needed to win 300 to get that back. Once I hit the mark, out comes the money.I wonder how much I could make if I left it all in there...

I guess i'm in the minority with the whole college thing, I'd actually venture to guess that percentage wise, more college kids are winning online for the very reason you gave, they have too.

It shouldn't be possible to lose it all in a few days. Conversely it shouldn't be possible to turn 50 into 200-300 in a few days either. You need 200 BB to play limit safely, and you need 15-20 max buyins to play no limit safely. That will do it if you are a winning player. If you are a losing player, this will stem the bleeding a bit. You need thousands of hands in to know if you are a winner or a loser though. Some will tell you you dont need to play within these bankroll guidelines. You already have personal experience to show you why it's important.

I decided to deposit $100. Haven't gone broke and I am up to around $1900 after about 6 weeks. Don't play above your limits.
