A Couch Dilemma

Recommended Posts

Here's the situation.I'm living with my parents over summer between college semesters. I am currently helping then re-finish their basement (it was already finished before, but it was shitty). I already own a lay-z-boy recliner which I bought when I was 16, and am planning on buying a matching couch and loveseat, as well as a large LCD tv. This stuff will all reside in my parent's basement (whether I live there or not) for a year or so until I get my own place. Here's the dilemma.Currently at the Brick in the area, there's a tent sale happening with some pretty good deals. I have narrowed it down to two options.1. buy this sofa and matching loveseat:each for $500, and then buy a TV seperately for approx. 1500-2000.2. Buy this sofa, loveseat, and chair:(it comes in black)which would cost around $3200 and then I'd get a free Hitachi 50" projection LCD.Known factors in the decision- The #1 couch and loveseat is noticeably of a lower quality than the one in #2.- The couch in #1 seems to be a little bit shallow, holding it back from providing a perfect sit.- The #2 couch is slightly less comfortable to lie down on.- The TV included in option #2 is a projection LCD, not flat panel. They say it's valued at $3300, but it's actually closer to $1500. Is Hitachi a good television manufacturer?- I have to buy a chair which will not be primarily used with the other purchases if I go with option 2.- I will can money with option 1, depending on the type of TV I decide to get.Thoughts? Opinions? Suggestions?

Go to the thrift store, buy a $100 couch and loveseat combo, keep your old TV and put that $3200 into something that will yeild you income in the future.LOL at the retail markups on jewelry, mattresses and new furniture and the people who readily pay them.

I wouldn't buy any of it, but you have to apply your own values.First, HDTVs are getting better and cheaper very quickly. You're going to get a better deal next year, so it makes sense to wait until you actually plan to watch the TV to buy it. Second, this is fairly big stuff and I am lazy, so I wouldn't want to move it down into a basement and then to my new place and then probably again.Your parents want to have some furniture in this basement, right? How you decide on the money depends on your relative financial situations and your relationship, but I would be inclined to put furniture in their basement that can stay. You know the physical dimensions and colors of the room and that may affect your decisions on these objects.

Additionally, he's a young guy who (I'm assuming) will have a woman in the picture at some relatively near point in his future. Once that happens, you can forget about any of your furniture ever seeing the light of a new shared apartment or house, trust all of us married or soon to be married guys on that one. No point (in my opinion) in dropping the cash on a lot of expensive furniture at this stage of your life, just spend the money on electronics and garbage pick or Craigslist a sofa like the rest of us...lol

I prefer the 2nd couch, as long as it's not that color. But I think you might be better off finding your own tv rather than just hoping they give you something decent.
