Accounting Student

Ok, so I'm just about to finish up my first year of college, 1st semester i was in engineering did ok gpa wise but just didn't like it, and am now finishing up my 1st semester of business classes and will in the actual college of business next fall(usually takes 2 years to be accepted but a)i'm in the honors program and b ) I took most of my prereqs in high school at a community college). So after this semester, my cum GPA will be around 3.4-3.5, and this semesters GPA will be at least a 3.6 which will put me on the deans list(3.5+). I don't anticipate my gpa falling in later years as I truly enjoy what I am doing and actually like studying it. Once I leave college I plan on having a Masters in Accounting, a BS in Finance, and passing my CPA exam, and possibly a minor in economics. The problem is that I don't think that my grades are good enough to get a well paying job out of college ($50k) and I'm really worried that I haven't applied myself enough this first year and that it's gonna screw me for the rest of college. I know getting an internship in business is really hard at my college(Iowa State) and I'm worried that I will not be able to obtain one from a respectable firm which will lead me to not getting the type of job I want. I have good people skills, I'm a hard worker, I'm trying to be involved on campus as much as possible but it's tough when I have to work 20+ hours a week plus 15 credit hours of school, and I'm in a fraternity. Can anyone in the industry please confirm or deny this cause this is really really bothering me.

You have a 3.5 and you're concerned that your GPA isn't high enough to get a good job? This is a joke, yes? You are WAY ahead of the curve, buddy.

You're worrying way too much for a freshman. Your might not have a 4.0, but your GPA is damn good and should be enough to get your foot in a number of doors. Work on your interview skills and you can easily beat out competition with better grades.

I got a internship / job with a big 4 firm with a 3.5 overall, 3.7 accounting GPA through undergrad no problem. At my university there was a combined BBA / MAcc program. I could have gotten a similarly paying job with any middle market firm / a consulting firm that recruited me pretty heavily with no problems. You're absolutely fine.

Accounting is the safest degree to get it, is this a joke? my buddy got his degree, hooked up with a recruiter, less than a yeat out of school making 60 + with JP Morgan. Chill out lil man. Keep in mind that recruitor thing though

I have good people skills,
Nope.Just a thought, have you considered getting into faux child porn? You could pretend you are 12, have a man rape you, you make millions, if not billions. Just tossin it out there.Gotta capitalize on your youthful looks while you can.Or, I hear they are remaking 21 Jumpstreet. You could infiltrate the local elementary school as a Johnny Depp type character, see who is dealing.as to your question, I have no idea.

No, I'm dead serious. My classes are pretty easy to me and I think if I had spent enough time over the semester studying more I should have been able to get a 4.0 and I think that other students have been and that now I'm to far behind to catch up.

Dude, my GPA at the end of freshman year was a 2.0. I know many, many people who did as bad or worse than me during their first year as well. I am just now making it back up to a 2.5 and it's looking like it won't be too hard to get into the school of business. You will be fine. Stop being so douchey.

This is the key here. Seriously, trust me, you're fine.

You need to fucking relax. At this point I would recommend you pay for sex.A 3.5 after one year is great. If classes are that easy for you, it'll be easy to raise that over the next three years. Personally, I think you should just maintain the 3.5 and have a shitload of fun...but that's just me. A 3.5 will get you a very good first job, and after that nobody will ever look at your grades again.Take a few deep breaths or something.

just a thought:If the US goes to a flat tax system while you are still in college, you should change majors. There will be a glut of out of work tax pros that will flood the accounting jobs.Good luck with school

I'm a freshman too, and also an Accounting/Finance major at Indiana University. I don't think you should be that worried, not that I have much experience to speak from, but from my interaction with other kids in the business school I have heard that GPA shouldn't be taken too seriously, unless it's just atrocious. The actual interview for a job is much more important, GPA just gets your foot in the door.

I have a BS in accounting and didn't get asked for my GPA in any of my interviews. They are more concerned with your work experience, at least at the places that I applied to. You can relax about your GPA 3.5 is fine and like strategy said better than most in their first year.

I don't really have any career/school advice, but if you are in college, I strongly recommend that you make a decision now that will affect your reputation for long after you leave this world. Here's what you need to do: whenever you clip your fingernails or toenails, save the clippings. Put them in a safe place, and don't tell anyone you are doing it. Keep this up until you die. Then, when your heirs are going through your stuff, they will find this giant box of nail-clippings, and wonder how someone who seemed so normal could have such a weird hobby. Your family will talk about you for generations.I'm too old to get an impressive collection for myself, but I wish someone had told me this advice when I was in college.Oh, and for extra effect, put them into little individual zip-loc bags with the date they were clipped. That would really freak people out.

I don't understand why you would want to work at a company that look at your grades before looking at you.
They can't interview all of the applicants if a large number of people apply. They have to weed out candidates somehow.Really though, I'm pretty sure this was just a brag post from napa.

Yep, you caught me. No, I really am worried that I am behind cause there are some really good guys in my house who have really good GPA's and haven't had an internship and I was talking to a buddy from a different college who is also in accounting and he has like a 3.98 and has some connections and idk I guess i just am to worked up over it or whatever. Plus, my gpa isn't anything to brag about.
