305th post spectacular: satellite strategy

Recommended Posts

305 posts under my belt, I feel really cool now. It would be my 30oth post, but those idiots in general forum hijacked me with a picture of Anna Kournikova (and you cant get mad at a pic of anna). Anyway, I got the idea of making an event out of the 300th post from TJ_Eckleburg (im not sure if thats spelled correctly) who did it last week. So hear you go.This post deals with satellite tournaments, specifically satellites to other online tourneys. Recently I have been successful in low buy-in satellite tournaments. Well, it's kinda interesting, in my last 4 online satellite tourneys, i've made the final table, but have finished one place away from getting the buy-in. I'm not sure as a player who can't finish or a duma** who thinks he's cool for making the final table. Anyway, the key during the first hour is tight play. Don't get yourself into trouble early. Coin flip situations need to be avoided. Avoid playing anything below 7's. Don't go crazy with AK. It's proly the one hand that gets people into the most trouble early on. Raise with it, and follow it up with a bet on the flop, if you're called, shut down. Unless you believe the person is on a draw, if so fire again. If you keep getting called, shut down, but don't be afraid to call a bet. Overbet the pot on the flop with AK, whether or not you hit. It will get the draws out of the way, and maybe scare away a few hands that beat you. Your goal is to double up by the first break. It gives you enough chips to work with to make bluffs. When you come back from the first break, the gloves are off, you can move and steal blinds. It is now worth your time to do so. Start raising with lower PP. If you're in the steal position, do so. I usually raise 3x BB, but switch it up. Blind stealing should be your most used play. At this point in the tourney, building a stack becomes imperative. Therefore, it becomes more necessary to get into marginal situations, i.e. coin flips. Don't kid yourself, you can't win a tourney without getting lucky sometimes. Start setting more traps, change up your play. Continue with this style until the final table. The number of seats available depends on the number of people that enter the tournament obviously. When you get to the final table, slow down. If you're in good chip position, don't attack people. Let other people do the work. Enter the pot with only above average hands, and when you enter go at it, much more aggressively maybe 4-4.5x BB. The blinds and antes are much more worth stealing. All you're trying to do is make it to the last 3 or 4 players. You don't need to win. If you're short-stacked, you have to gamble. If you're going to raise, go all in. You're forced to play lower-quality hands. Avoid stealing from early position, because it just won't work in the long run. People are trying to eliminate you and you shouldn't get involved from early position. People are too likely to call, because they dont usually need to win. Be less likely to take coin flips when short-stacked, unless you are the aggressor. Don't call your chips away, with coin flips. Your raises have equity until your opponent makes the decision to call. I hope this will help you become a successful satellite tourney player. If you have anything to add, I'm trying to improve my play also. I don't claim to be an expert, but I have had success.
