I play some limit holdem and would like to get started in 7-Stud, but I have a few questions I havent been able to get answered.1) What is a proper bankroll?2) What is the proper amount to sit with?3) How bad can a typical downswing get? (I'm sure I'm going to lose at first, but I want to know what type of swings are caused by just normal variance.)

I play a fair bit of stud Hi/Lo on Paradise, mainly at the $0.50/$1.00 tables. Standard sit-down for me and most others is $20. A few silly people will sit with $5 or $10, and the occasional guy brings his entire bankroll (ie. $127). Not sure why (intimidation?), but all it tells me is that I can lose $20 or will win up to around $127. :D 20 Big Bets is my suggestion, regardless of the table size. This should allow you to see some hands, suffer some bad beats, win when others suffer bad beats, and basically get your feet wet.

It's really not much different than what you need to sit with for a LHE game. I'd advise about 25-30x the BB. That'll be enough for you to feel comfortable, as well as giving you enough ammo to really maximize any monster hand that you'd pick up.Be aware that the average level of play at a low-limit 7-stud table is often pretty awful compared to hold 'em. You're likely to have a little more variance than when you play hold 'em, simply because you will get heinously sucked out on with people playing to 7th street with really, really bad hands (and then hitting their two-outer or something). If you have the bankroll to play it, though, it can be pretty profitable. The site you play at can make a big difference, though. Where were you planning to play?Shane

Well I have Mac, so I really have no choice but to play at PokerRoom. Table selection there looks pretty thin for Stud at the low limits, but I've only looked into the Stud room a few times.

Can't provide much info then, as I've never played on PokerRoom. Just bear in mind that ante structure (relative to the bet size) makes a BIG difference in how you need to approach a stud game. Higher ante games (a la, the low limits on Party) require you to loosen up somewhat. Low ante games (a la, Stars) mean you can sit back and really play tight and pick your spots to attack. If you're serious about learning the game, I'd advise you to visit the stud forum at 2+2. A good group of players over there with lots of experience and advice under their belts. Fairly helpful and friendly as well. I'm sure someone over there has played stud at PokerRoom and can advise you about the ante structure. Or you can tell me what it is for the various limits and I'll do my best to give you a sense about whether it's reasonable or not.Shane

At PokerRoom the lowest level that they have is $1/$2. For this game the ante is 10 cents (or 10% of the small bet). I believe the higher limits have the same basic structure with 10% of the small bet being the ante. I will be starting at the lowest level of course.

FYI - On Paradise, the $0.50/$1.00 Stud 8 Tables don't even have an ante :!: :!: :!:

Play tight then, by all means. A .10 ante on a 1-2 game is very small. You don't need to force the action or play anything other than very strong starting hands. The other best piece(s) of advice that I can give you about stud is that you are really faced with two critical decision-points in every hand -- 3rd street and 5th street. Especially with your ante size you talk about, don't play anything marginal (so your 3rd street decision is a bit easier than if you were playing in a higher ante game). 5th street is your other really critical decision. If you don't have a made hand (or very strong, live draw) by then, get out before the betting doubles and things get a lot more aggressive. If you chase in stud (especially with dead cards in your hand), you're going to get killed.Shane
