Alot Of Money, Losing Job.

Recommended Posts

So .. I love my job. I basically sit at my desk and post on forums all day and make 1k a week for doing so. I come in Late, and leave work early. I take 2 hour long lunch breaks. I get all National holidays off paid. This is my third year here , and I have 3 weeks of untouched vacation. I had a pension .. more to that later. I now have a 401k . Paid healthcare. Damn good job . Recently .. I inherited about 3 1/2 buyins to the main event. My pension was returned fully on my behalf , as a refund , not a cashout .. due to a discrepency when my employer originally enrolled me into it. So , because the contributions were paid on my behalf , the refund was sent to me , without penalty . Lump sum .. about 37 grand. Im 26 .. 37 grand is alot of dough. Anyways .. So that happened .. back to the job portion ... I was told today that I have 25 more days before my company merges with another company. The other company doesnt want to bring me on. So im getting laid off .. My severence? nothing ... cashout 3 weeks of vacation, no sicktime cashout. I dont have a degree .. Im 26 , and got to this position by working hard and moving up the scale. I figured this to be a life long career. Im pretty bumed out about this. Yes , while I did recieve alot of cash upfront .. Im losing my ****ing job. I just bought a 250 thousand dollar house , new truck and car .. I have a fiance and a 6 year old . (She works thank god, and actually makes more than I do) , but .. Im still losing my job. My cake as job .... Anyone ever been laid off and it totally come out of the blue? Im getting really depressed as the last time I was in Vegas was wsop 06 , and we were planning on going in 2 weeks ... but now its probably not a smart move since I dont have anything lined up. Oh , and yea I can rollover my cashout my 401k .. but its not that much either .. half a buyin to the main event ... Fiance tells me I need to find a job (doing whatever) that pays what I make now ... how the hell does someone find a job without a degree , making what I make? Im screwed ... Sigh , maybe take all the money Im getting and open an underground poker room in Denver with a rake. Who the **** knows ... **** IT ALL .

it's certainly possible to find a job based on your work experience, even without a degree. start looking for a job now because your main competition in your market is going to be your fellow employees. there are plenty of lucrative jobs that don't require a degree. try something in sales. i needed a job in denver about 5 years ago and got a job as a mortgage broker. good money, and if you are doing well they will let you set your own hours. best of luck to you. don't let this get you down. it happens to tons of people.

Does that dude Mark still run his game? The Matterhorn still open for business? I don't think starting an underground club is such a great idea. The Blackhawk/Central City people DON'T like any competition and the word will spread.I don't know man. Go sell patio furniture at Broadway Furniture.I really like how you equate money to the ME buy-in. I used to think in terms of BB's.

the average person switches careers suddenly 3 times in their life. it happens to everyone. real estate brokerage, sales of any kind (vehicles, timeshares, etc) all pay fairly well + commission and badass health benefits if you get a job with say fairfield resorts which im sure has an office in denver. all said, dont panic, just take it easy, you got some money to spend time looking and you arent going to be forced to take the first job offered. at 26 youll ahve no problem recovering as long as you dont do anything crazy like go buy into the main event hoping ot cash and not have to work again. So ..
You have something better than a degree: experience. Network your *** off right now. Call the clients/whatever you work with outside the company and start talking to them. Talk to neighbors, friends, relatives.Talk, talk, talk, talk.People hire people, not resumes. The $37K is to support your fiance and kid. That's why you were given that "gift." Don't be an *** and buy into the ME. Good luck. Been there, done that about once every five years. Get used to it. Rah rah for gloablization and consolidation as business models.

I'm pretty confused. Maybe I just read it too fast, but with 401k$ could you not put that into a high interest bank account to begin with?Seriously if I had that $ i would be pretty chuffed, and not worried about a job. I mean if worst comes to worst, live off the interest or dig into it slightly whilst your studying or something. There are loads of good jobs that people have without degrees the only problem is that they have been with companies for years and worked thier way up or just learned the skills on the job. Your best option in my opinion is work out what you want to be, look at it as a fresh start and either join a company doing that and expect to be earning less but getting experience, or go learn the degree you need for it.or... just go find the same dam job as you were doing! nobody's job is unique :club:

I hate to be a hater, but maybe you needed this wakeup? Get back to working hard and moving up in your next job, and less slacking and shirking.

Buy into the main event. Maybe you'll cash and won't have to work again.Well, maybe not. Good Luck to you. I agree that you should network yourself and find a similar paying job (although you probably won't be posting here as much). Whatever you do, don't sit on your a.s.s. feeling sorry for yourself. I know from experience that this doesn't work.

As someone with a degree and little work experience I've found that people seem to value experience much higher. Maybe the UK job market is different to where you are but experience seems to be a very vauable commodity here so you have a good standing stone to sell yourself on.

What sucks is .... Last week , my fiance and I , getting this money we were pretty stoked .. have a nice vacation in vegas , pay off all the credit cards .... and then the next week Im thrown threw this loop .. were all poker players here , and while we talk about maintaining our cool when taking a bad beat .... this bad beat scares the **** out of me . Nothing like uncertainty to **** up your day. Im genuinely nervouss / scared / anxious about whats in store for me next .. I was very comfortable in life , Work , lose at poker , work some more , lost some more at poker ... I had a good thing going. Ive already smoked a pack and a half , and its only 330

It could be a lot worse. Keep your fiance by treating this as a temporary setback, being positive, and attack the problem. She'll admire you for it. Keep the house by doing the same things. A missed vacation is minor in the whole scheme of things.

Doesnt help me. *Required Education Bachelors Degree + 4 years related expirience* ... Just solidifies my problem.
Get a degree now, and work while in school too. If you don't do it now, you'll wish that you did, fifteen years from now.

Im suprised that I didnt get any flaming , guess thats why I love this community and have called it home for so long.

Not to throw a twist into this, but how your fiancee reacts while you do the job search will likely give you a really good clue of what kind of wife she is going to be. They say you don't find out who your true friends are until you are down. Well you are down right now and I don't really like her demanding that you go get a job RIGHT NOW that PAYS THE SAME. I mean, was there ever a period where you 3 lived off of your salary? At any rate, her support at this point in time (with encouragement so you don't get too used to being unemployed) would be much more useful than demanding you find work immediately. At any rate, this should help you find out if you are going to be in a marriage, or if you will just be a paycheque.Good luck to you.
