How Many Hands...

Hello,Newbie here on posting about poker so forgive me if i m still not very familiar with the acronyms etc or if i dont use them. i m sure it will come. I currently play on Pokerstars under a couple of names the current one being "javasoul".anyways my question is, providing a standard run of cards (not dead and not so hot either) and forgetting the extremes (loose super agressive and very tight passive) what's your average % of seeing the flop?I ask this because I think i may be involved in too many hands but then again i also dont consider myself a loose player. I dont drool over suited connectors or suited cards and have no problem letting them go out of position or even on smaller raises....but I very much like my pot odds. That being said i still find myself being involved in too many hands.any observations?thanks.

The percentage of hands you play is based entirely on your stlye and ability.Don't take offense to this, but seeing as you're asking this question, I'm going to assume that you're newer to poker and have a lot to learn, therefore your abilities are not that high yet. That being said, I'd play pretty tight and try to start with the best hand all of the time until you figure out how to play more hands and outplay people.You should probably only be playing about 15% - 20% of your hands if this is the case.

I agree with this, playing overly tight isn't a bad idea when first starting out. I hate to say it but "Play like the pros" by Hellmuth is actually a good start for beginners and preaches sticking mostly to the top 10 hands.

I think you should stick to around 20% for full ring and around 25% for 6 max but if it is loose passive you can play more. really aggressive game you should play less.... yada yada yada.

I hate to say it but "Play like the pros" by Hellmuth is actually a good start for beginners and preaches sticking mostly to the top 10 hands.

I'd hate to recommend that book as well, but I also agree with you.

None taken. I'm not really new to the game. been playing on and off for about 7 years. Home cash games paid my last few years of university but enough about that....i know that obviously the style of play determines your willingness to play said two cards but i was more looking towards what 'YOU' do and what sort of % number 'YOU' put to it. you mention 15-20%. thats exactly what i was looking for: a range of number that can be then adjusted with regards to your playing style. in other words maybe a general base number that can be lower or higher based on your style. does that make sense?

Yes. Ultra-tight = 15-18%Pretty tight = 18-22%Regular TAG = 18-25%Normal = 22-27%Fairly Loose = 24-29%Loose = 27-32%Very Loose = 29-36%Ultra Loose = 32-40%Really anything outside of those is verrry hard to maintain and play optimally, no matter your style. Of course these overlap as your cards/table determine how you will play as much as your decided style. These numbers are just how it's always been for me --- I've never been able to win consistently when playing >40% of my hands, but depending on the table, I've known people that have done well almost as high as 60%. That required tight tables and very strong postlfop play with lots of dancing.
