He's borderline, but I say 'just barely' because he was incredibly consistent, did win two cups (in four trips), the Conn Smythe, he was nominated several times for the Vezina, he was a second team all-star.... he gets lumped in with guys like Osgoode, the Beezer, Richter, Joseph etc. but I think he's a level above those guys (none of whom I think deserve the hhof)... If he didn't win the Smythe and wasn't nominated for the Vezina I'd probably say no, but I think those two things (on top of four cup appearances) are enough to give him my vote.

I think the real question is: Does Barasso belong?

Borderline is the perfect description. Lots of wins and cups for sure but I can't remember too many seasons where he was a leader in GAA or Save%. I'm not saying he never led I just don't recall.

I always remember a Don Cherry segment on Vernon during his Flames days. Cherry mentioned how Vernon was the master of making an ordinary shot look difficult and showed several different replays. First you'd see a standard shot to the glove with Kirk McLean (who's a stand up goalie) and he'd make the glove in a simple, unspectacular fashion. Made sense...be in position, make the save. Then you'd see almost the exact same shot and Vernon would catch the puck and then follow through like he was doing the C of YMCA and then flop over as if the force of the puck toppled him.

I think Vernon got himself into a few more highlight reels than he should've.

I say "no" but it's not by much.

Only if they have a category for "embellishers". Like you guys already said, he was the best at making a run of the mill save look like it belonged on ESPN. We used to imitate his antics playing road hockey. Everyone wanted to be the goalie just so we could make the big vernon glove save.
That's not a hall of famer.

That's a pretty poor reason to leave someone out of the Hall of Fame. Hasek embellishes saves and dives like an olympian whenever he's touched and then whines and moans to the officials. Because of that he shouldn't be inducted into the hhof?

I understand that some people don't think Vernon is hall worthy, but I don't think it's black and white answer, either way you cut it the argument's pretty close. Belfour was also pretty good at embellishing saves while he played for the Hawks.

I really hope you're not incinuating (sp?) that Ed Belfour belongs in the hall of fame!?!?

For what reason?

If/when he does, I really hope they make mention of him offering that cop "a million dollars" to let him off for whatever it was...

I don't think he's HOF material. No team will be retiring his #. If he does get in, it will be just another example of why the NHL has the easiest hall of fame to get in to.

I don't think one drunken night will be held against him.

Isn't Belfour like 3rd on the alltime wins list? Until his last season with the Leafs, every season he had was between above average and great. He was a monster for the Stars in their two finals appearance.

Yeah, there's a good case for Belfour.

People forget that he was so good in Chicago they traded away Hasek since they had Hackett for back-up already.

Those 75 shutouts put him 9th in the all-time list and that's ahead of Roy, Osgood and Hasek.

Just 3 years ago he got 10 shutouts in one season with the Leafs.

His attitude maybe questionable at times but he's been a top goaltender for a long time.
