Flame Wars, Stupid Posts And The Reaction To Them

Recommended Posts

Last night's rail thread for Daniel at Tunica degenerated into a series of flames and other crap that resulted in a few posters being given suspensions. Two of those suspensions have been lifted and silkyjonson and Drawing Dead should be able to post again. I deleted a ton of posts from that thread. When a flame war starts nobody is the winner and we all are the losers. If you think a post is stupid try and ignore it and don't start attacking the poster. It is also the tone that is used to say that you disagree with the poster that is a problem. There is a way to disagree with something and too often posters are over the line in how they are doing it.We try and not delete things in this forum and maybe that needs to be changed. We get slammed when action is taken and then slammed when no action is taken. Both sides in flame wars are wrong. Some of the most frustrating posts are those from people who care about the forum and community and provide a lot of value who complain about all the crap and then get involved in flame wars.

I've been involved in many internet forums. I've moderated before and I understand the hardships of staffing one of these things. As you said, you're going to be slammed no matter what action you take. BUT... I have to say I enjoy the "hands off" approach here at FCP. I think this forum does rather well even though it is lightly moderated. For the most part the flames here are harmless and we've come to accept them. It's even part of the ritual of becoming a veteran member here. I'm fine with that. I've been to too many forums where the staff feels like they have to protect everybody. On the same note though, there has to be limits. And when a flame war takes over a thread, I think it's fine for staff to step in. When two parties have shown that they no longer have any respect for the forum or the thread they are ruining, then it's time for staff to step in. As forum members, we hope the staff will be fair and just. Their job can be hard, and I don't think it's fair for anyone to publicly attack the staff when they are trying to maintain order and just get people to follow the rules.

Your right flame wars are idiotic. I get involved sometimes as I disagree with people getting picked on for no good reason. I just want to say that if I ever post anything and anyone feels offended I apologize, I am usually at work or playing online and doing a million things so I dont really check my posts to see if they sound offensive to someone, as I'm sure they do. If they do post something saying so in a nice manner letting me know I guarantee I will recognize my mistake and apologize to you.Being on an internet forum we are not privey to body language, nor do we have to look a person in the face when we say something so in light of this it is easy to regress to conflict and arguments, many posts are misunderstood and also many are'nt. I'll try to do my part to not escalate any conflicts.Paul

I think that in the FCP forums terms of service there should be a clause that allows any member who is unnecessarily flamed to challenge thier verbal attacker to a live bare fist cage match. If the challenge is issued and the attacker declines he is banned from the forum.

What happened in that thread?I actually think the climate in this forum is mostly alright, the huge majority of the people here seems to be friendly and polite as far as that's possible in an internet forum, and posters who behave decently get treated the same way. Most of the flames are well deserved too, and not meant to be hurtful imo - and this is Full Contact Poker after all...

I've never had a problem with the flames. I've never had a problem flaming, I've never had a problem being flamed. Flames have been around since way before I even started posting--and they used to be a lot worse. I've never hesitated to call a spade a spade, and I know that's not always won me friends here, and I can understand why it might appear as though I'm stepping on toes from time to time. I can also promise you that I've never flamed anyone who was undeserving of one.I know that I've also taken my flames too far from time to time, but, in a lot of ways it's difficult not to. I care more for this forum than anyone except for maybe DN himself. I've put in a lot of time, effort, knowledge and work into making strat(most specifically NLHE) a lot better place and, without the help of the admin and the moderators on this forum(even before Bob and Gov were running the show)--it's all been for naught. And that is amazingly frustrating. I have a very real, and very attainable vision of what this forum and it's posters could be and have. I've offered advice, suggestions, my time, my patience, everything but my first born, to make it what it could be, and it's fallen off deaf ears. I'm in, excuse my language, a "Fuck you" mode with it. That's not really fair to everyone else who stumbles across this forum, but, it is what it is. I'm not saying it has to, or will, remain that way, but, it'd be nice to see that those of us who do care and want this place to be something good were some how rewarded if not pacified with our wants having been met. I think Bob and KDawg need help moderating. I know that DNA is usually pretty busy, but, he handles Off-Topic pretty well. Steve, Theresa and Custom being absent certainly doesn't help. I think that would solve a lot of the problems with General getting out of hand. No, I don't think a Nazi-state is appropriate, but, cutting down on the rampant stupidity would help. As for my part in that rampant stupidity, well, I can say it's over. I hope I can hold myself to that, but, we'll see.In reality, it makes no difference to me. I have no problem moving to 2+2 full time. I'd just prefer to stay here. This place is my E-home.

Why lift des moines suspension???.. in my opinion he shouldnt be allowed to post ever again... Ive never seen him post anything worthwhile yet he always seems to have a cocky respsonse.
Visit the strategy forums much? I can't give an exact number as the search function cuts it off at 1000 returns(Just in NLHE strat), but, I'd guesss that I have 2-3k posts in the strategy sections. That's a matter of opinion as to whether or not they're worthwhile, but, I've been told they are.

Bob and I just had a long phone call regarding how discipline is handled and we both agree suspensions will be put in place to those who feel starting flame wars is the way things are solved. It's a step forward suspending accounts when necessary and full bans to those who continue to disrespect our rules. Posting is a privilage, please don't forget that. There are many forums out there where classless jokes are praised, this forum isn't one of them and will never become one.... and hey our man Daniel is at the final table of a WPT televised event today. Exciting day indeed so lets not ruin it :club:

Your avatar doesn't load, try uploading it here and not external linking it should fix it.EDIT: Nevermind, just a slow connection loading it, although I do suggest uploading here instead through your profile.

Have you been passed along the outline that Zach, Actuary, CobaltBlue(?) and myself came up with in regards to improving the forums?

Were you sure that yellow crayon on red construction paper covered in Rainbow Brite stickers was really the best option to use, though?

I have a question and it's related to some of the word wars I've been involved in/dragged into. There have been occasions where I have posted a humorous (subject to opinion, of course) response on a thread, only to be called an idiot or told to stfu because I'm not funny. This has happened to many more people than me. Frankly, I take this as a direct insult, particularly when my original post was not directed at anyone in particular. I also consider it a "flame". I realise that it is as much a matter of personal sensitivity as anything. I can take my lumps as well as anyone, imo, but should I reserve the right to respond to someone who calls me a moron or should I laugh it off? A number of people on this (and other) forum(s) have a predilection for being an e-bully and I find that disturbing.

The e-bullys are the ones who I am most annoyed with and are the ones that I intend to try and deal with the most.

I think that's a situation where you just make a mental note that so and so doesn't find you funny and laugh it off. Now if that individual begins to stalk your posts and flame every one, then you can begin to feel some anymosity. But a simple "STFU" can be laughed off quite easily.

Or maybe you should just leave the comedy to the professionals.

This seems to have been the case once or twice and it's annoying. I will not name names, however. Normally, I am more than happy to laugh it off or ignore it, but when it happens repeatedly, it detracts from my enjoyment of cruising around the boards.

That's funny on a number of levels.
