I hear players talking about having a mentor. How does it work?Do players pay mentors?Do they play heads up with instructions? Can it work over internet only?ISAAKOP so i think i need a mentor or coach.

I personally do not see how a player can progress beyond casual or recreational play without one.If you have any talent and a HUGE desire to play seriously, finding a good one is the key to getting there.GL :club:

I'm not sure if I should be getting mentored or mentoring others. I like a healthy mix of both :club: I miss my private invite only poker group :D Such a good helpful forum we had going.

Ive worked with one in the past, and still go back to him if i'm having issues, want another look at my game, etc.Basicly we just get on skype and i tell him what site/table i'm playing. From there he rails and I tell him what cards i'm playing. We discuss reads on the other players, his reads on how i'm playing hands, etc.Just depends on what i'm needing, he will also have students rail him, discussing how he is playing, reading the table, etc.We just work out the details before we begin the session and go from there.A good coach/mentor should outline pretty detailed goals with you, and provide a plan of action on what you need to do to reach those goals. If you are looking for a referal PM me and we can discuss further.

My buddy Ryan got a free lesson from Tom McEvoy so he could write a couple stories. He enjoyed the experience and even learned a thing or two ... a bit pricey ($200/hour), but if you're playing at high enough stakes, it's probably worth it.This story includes contact info for McEvoy ...http://ryanmclane.ca...cles/28502.htmlYou probably won't learn much from this one, but it might make you chuckle.http://ryanmclane.ca...cles/28496.html
Moneymaker won the WSOP with a $40 satellite entry. That's nothing compared to sixty cents ...

I don't know if you necessarily need a "mentor" per se.I think the important thing is to be surrounded by people who can help you grow.Between Daniel, Phil, Allen and Juanda I don't think there was someone who was declared the master but imagine the sharing of ideas in that group. No mentor but one hell of a classroom nonetheless.

Wasn't there a thread just like this, but instead of it being serious, it bashed on Steve?Either way, Scott speaks good words when he's not trying to kill himself. Listen to the nutzbuster.

This pretty much sums it up. (Nice to e-see you again, Blacktie.)For the OP: I had a serious mentor for a while. It was done all online and I did not pay him. I think reimbursement is what makes a mentor different from a coach. He would rail me at times while we discussed hands on IM. Other times he would go over hand histories for me. This was especially helpful with tourneys because it became very apparent early on that I was not being nearly aggressive enough in the middle rounds which is why I was bubbling so many of them. I think without going over every hand in succession of a tournament, I might never have discovered that about myself. I came to have this relationship with my mentor just by asking a simple question about a hand one day. That led to a "if you ever need help or advice, let me know" conversation and I started to go to him with all of my questions. It wasn't a formalized relationship at all but started out more as friends discussing poker. Overall, I would highly recommend a mentor. It doesn't even have to be someone really spectacular at poker. They just need to be significantly better than you and have a real interest in seeing you get better.
I keep telling myself I'm moving on
Believing my heart was strong
But every step I take that leads me away
Just circles back to your door

Wishing I didn't love you
What I'd give if I could touch you

Wishing I didn't love you anymore

I have a very well-accomplished mentor and don't think there's any books or videos out there that can explain things to me the way he explains them. I have a good feeling that it won't be too much longer until I can confidently quit my shitty dayjob.

That's good to hear. Good luck with being able to get out of your job and playing poker for a living, awesome.
