I'm in a tournament currently second in chips with about 12000. I'm no where near comfortable though, it's a real volatile structure. Blinds are 150/300 with 25 ante. I im in the big blind with A
T
. 2 limpers, the sb completes and I raise to 1200 hoping to take it down. The limpers call the sb folds. The flop comes 6
7
9
. It gets checked around. The turn comes 8
. Theres 4000 chips in the pot and I bet 3000 with the straight. The first limper raises all in for 2400 more, and I call. He shows JTo. I miss my flush on the river. Leaving me with 2500 in chips. Any opinions?

Maybe throwing out a big bet on the flop would have pushed J 10 o out.

I would have semi-bluffed at the pot on the flop, a strong enough raise might have gotten the 10 J off of his gutshot. Once the turn hit you were toast because he wasn't afraid of the flush anymore. It was just unlucky that you caught the straight with the 8, and he caught a higher one. Couldn't suck out on the river with a diamond, meh. Big bet on the flop might have gotten him off his hand, then again, he did call with J 10 off..don't know what ya can do.

What would you do if one of the limpers bet the flop after you checked it? you'd be in a tough spot to call. so I would keep the pressure on them with a bet on the flop. Its a tough board for them against a preflop raiser from the bb who leads out. If your out of position force them to make a descsion. there's 4000 in the middle of the table dont leave it sitting there, its yours till someone proves otherwise.

Afterward, someone pointed out that the limper with JT0 was playing reckless because he had to get up for work in 4 hours. i.e. he was trying to bust out. At this point taking a stab at the pot is going to cost me almost half of my stack, as anyone who calls will go all in. I didn't think that was a wise play with 3 diamonds on the board. I don't think i played this hand poorly. I was second in chips and did not want to do anything drastic and lose half of my chips. however, it turned out I lost about 80 percent of it. Thanks for the opinions.

You shouldn't have raised in the large blind with Ace Ten.... You can't discount the chance of limper having limped in with a strong hand... this does happen, limping doesn't nessicarily mean you're beat. if you just call, you can get away from the hand much easier than if you raise, build the pot, and then pretty much commit yourself. By building that pot with a marginal strong hand, you made yourself commit to the pot. You also would have been way better off bettting on the flop, putting j10 to the test on the flop. you have some stregth, that you proably beat unpaired big card hands, but those hands could have draws better than yours, but ones they would be unwilling to go for against a bet... like a gut shot, for example, or a jack high flush draw... Once you made the bet on the turn, you were pot committed to calling the final 2400... but you waited a card to late to bet.... No fear... if you make a raise like that pre flop, and get that flop, which is very scary to unpaired high cards, or even pairs without flush draws... that a strong bet on the flop will winn you the pot...
