Ok, my first strat post. Be gentle, but honest.

This was a 30 person live tourney, 3 tables.
I made an enemy at the first table by just running over it. It was a soft table and I knew everybody at the table except the guy on my immediate right. For some reason every time I raised, he started steaming. After we balanced tables, he was a couple of positions to my right.
Anyway, on to the hand.

Live Tourney
Blinds: $400/$800
30 players at start, down to 17

Hero t4800
Villain t5200

Pre-flop: (8 players) Hero is SB with QJ Villain is MP2
UTG folds, UTG+1 folds, MP1 folds, MP2 calls, CO folds, Button folds, Hero calls, BB checks.

Flop: 4 5 2 ($2400, 3 players)

Hero push?
Should this have been pushed preflop?

I'll detail more after a few replies. Let me know if more info is needed.

If there are antes at this level, you have an M of about 3. If not, you have an M of 4. Pooosh preflop, probably. Was MP2's stack similarly low?

As played check fold. You have no idea where you are at. Did MP2 limp with Ace rag? If so, he likely hit a pair or maybe even the straight. What does the BB have? Could be anything...25, 36, 45, AA, 22.

At first, I thought push PF. Then something popped in my head and I decided to call and push on the flop pretty much regardless of what hit.
So flop comes, I push. BB folds and villain calls with A rag . Turn comes another heart and it's done.
I think any other time he would've laid it down, but I pissed him off early and he saw a chance to get me. He came close to folding a couple times. He lifted his cards to throw them and then slowly sat them down and called.

I really wish I had thought of that, then. I had built a good stack early then donked it off playing too fast. I was somewhat tilting and looking at how short I was. In reality I could've waited and built back up.

I would have pushed preflop but you have to check/fold that flop with no hand/no draw.

I really can't believe that villain came close to folding after the flop - this is a no brainer push/call once that flop comes down. If he really thought about folding this hand post flop - that would be horrible

There aren't very many strong players at this game. I'd say 90% do not think about position, odds, anything. There's a TON of limping and they get so pissed when I raise. ABC poker pretty much kills them. I've won many times and always go deep. (I hope that doesn't sound too whatever, I know I'm a friggin n00b, but I'm very interested in getting better)
Busting out just breaks their hearts, that's why he pondered the fold. "Willing to die to live" means nothing to them. If I hadn't ticked him off so bad earlier, he would've layed it down for fear of busting.

With that sort of read, this makes pushing preflop a no doubter..No need to let them catch a piece of the flop and then call your jam

I believe BB was shorter than both of us. The people there will literally let themselves be blinded down to nothing without pushing.

It should have been a push PF, or just held off for a better spot.

I woulda pushed preflop but postflop, check/fold with 2 other people in the pot on that board.

by the sounds of things, we both play in quite a similarly structured game.

I don't like the push post flop but i have seen a few good players make the play, but its too high risk for my liking. I'd prefer solid, aggressive poker, and the push post flop is border line crazy esp when the flop is likely to have hit so many 'limper' hands. ace-rag cud have a str8 or tp/tk (even middle or bottom pair with top kicker is usually good here, whether or not the villain would no that, i dont know), suited connector could have str8 or flush draws etc.

pre flop tho, if u thot u have enuf follding equity, go with it, but if the guy is pissed at u, is it not more likely he'll call u. But even so, if u still think he fold enuf times, do it, but i dont mind seeing a flop here.
