PokerStars 3/6 Hold'em (6 handed) Hand History Converter Tool from FlopTurnRiver.com (Format: FCP)

Preflop: Hero is BB with J icon_suit_club.gif , A icon_suit_heart.gif .
3 folds, Button raises, SB calls, Hero 3-bets, Button caps, SB calls, Hero calls.

Flop: (12 SB) 9 icon_suit_heart.gif , 8 icon_suit_spade.gif , T icon_suit_heart.gif (3 players)
SB checks, Hero checks, Button bets, SB calls, Hero raises, Button 3-bets, SB caps, Hero calls, Button calls.

Turn: (12 BB) 6 icon_suit_spade.gif (3 players)
SB bets, Hero calls, Button calls.

River: (15 BB) 7 icon_suit_club.gif (3 players)
SB bets, Hero raises, Button folds, SB calls.

Final Pot: 19 BB

I think preflop could go either way, in terms of just calling, but I think I probably have an equity edge here.

Flop is definitely the most debatable street. I figured GS+overs were enough to try building a pot, 3 handed. C/r accomplishes that more than leading, given our relative position.

Turn plays itself.

Anyone go for an overcall on the river instead?

The problem with the flop c/r is that you very likely don't have an equity edge here. The SB at least figures to hit this board, and the button may have an overpair. After the 3bet/smoothcall cap by button/SB, its pretty evident that you are up against an overpair and set/2pair/straight. Also, between the button and sb, alot of your outs are tainted.

I would call preflop, and I don't think it's all that close. Unless button is very tight with his steal attempts (or SB is very tight), you probably have a small edge here on average. But, button will cap with many hands that dominate you, and likely won't cap with anything you dominate. That right there probably negates any edge you have.

So, since you don't have a significant equity edge, why help your opponents define your hand? You're the BB; if you just call, you can represent just about anything on the flop.

Anyway, as played, on the flop, let's give you 7 outs for the OESD, 1 out for the backdoor flush, and maybe 1 overcard out. Then you're about 2-1 to hit by the river, so your equity is abou even. So if all your opponents stay in, it doesn't much matter how many bets go in on the flop (except that if there's a lot of action, then it's likely that your overcards are worthless).

So, since the pot is large, I'd actually suggest leading the flop, and giving button a chance to raise and maybe knock out the SB (which, on average, might give you 1 or 2 extra outs). But check/call would be my second choice.
Then you go to da box for 2 minutes by yourself, you feel shame... then you get free.

Interesting hand.

I raise preflop.

Button has anything.
SB had enough to call with but not enough to raise with.
I like my AJ here with position on the opponent who is more of a threat.

As long as you don't force a continuation bet on a bad board, the preflop raise should be valuable, in my opnion.

I normally don't think about check-raising this flop.
But if your goal is to build a pot, this certainly does so.
And it gains quite a bit of info as well!

I raise the river as you did.

Going for an overacall gets you 1 additional bet from Button.
Raising scores the same additional bet from SB.
But adds the possibility of gaining 2 more from Button.
