I am a harry potter dork which i have said many times. Becaue i love the books, i hate the movies. when i read the books, i have a set picture in my mind what they look like and that is why i like the books. Rowling describes them so well but the movies ruin them for me. The movies are good the first time you see them but i made the mistake of seeing the third and fourth multiple times and now when i read the books, i think of the weakish dumbledore that is portrayed in the movies
I hear you....I hate when I've seen a movie and then read the book. Something is always off. A character has the wrong color hair and it annoys me to no end. I haven't felt the same way about Dumbledore, but I also have not reread the books after each movie. From the first, though, the movies were exactly how I pictured it....the settings, Quidditch, etc. I remember thinking after number one, that the only flaw was I pictured the cupboard under the stairs on the left after you entered the kitchen, not on the right in the hallway. That's the vital difference (to me) in all books; we can each picture it our own way and we are all right.

I love the Harry Potter series so much. Of course the books are better than the movies (which are still fantastic). I have to give them credit for Harry. The actor is a dead on lock for Harry Potter. They did some great casting with the Weasleys, too.

I really like Pulp Fiction but in no ways would it be in the greatest 50 movies ever.I completely realize what Star Wars did to the make up of Hollywood with the birth of the "Blockbuster" movie. People just always say it was a revolutionary movie in terms of science-fiction. However, I just feel that 2001 was much much much much more revolutionary. The stuff they did in that movie was just incredible. To this day I have never seen a movie with better special effects, and it was released in 1968. The concepts that Kubrick came up with about space were and are still just mindblowing. If you haven't seen it, do it now.
Thanks for reminding me of this one. I am guilty of not liking it as much as the book, which I read first, because everything was not exactly as I had pitured it. I have a sci-fi geek son though, who would probably love it. I'll have to rent it soon.

But that is exactly what I'm talking about. Instead of movies, lets talk art. I think Picasso is trash compared to Monet, but the dude that just paid $110 million for that Picasso thinks I'm crazy. It's completely subjective as to WHY you like a movie. You say 'artform' and then generalize the word artform to mean ONLY what you decide it means... but for me the word artform means amazing acting and a wonderful story which in turn entertains me, just as watching a 'technically sound' film "entertains" you.... I assume you understand what I'm getting at.ps... My top 10 list includes 7 movies made before 1990 and 3 movies made before 1970.
Come on, we all know a three year old who can paint better than Picasso :club:

I think some parts of Saving privte ryan are sluggish, and in general Im not a huge fan of war stories about individual heroism, as most wars, wars like WW 2 were fought and won by technology, industry, and the sacrifce of the many, not the few. That being said, I think the first 45 minutes of the movie is the single most powerful 45 minutes in the history of film I've never seen anyone shot, much less been in a carnage house like ww2, but the first 45 made me feel like I was really watching a modern war, with all the horror that comes with a modern war. THough the movie was a tribute to the ww2 generation, and to the veterans that fought so hard, and lost so much in the war, for me personally, it was the most powerful anti war film I've ever seen. I never want to fight in a war like that, and I never want any one else to die in a war like that.

I agree. I'll never forget the first time I saw the movie. Tom Hanks is all, "I'll see you on the beach." And then the boat opens up and BOOM. Its sick.

Great Movie, one of my all time Favs. Charlie Kaufman is a genius.Adaptation and Being John Malkovich are both amazing movies as well, and apparently Kaufman's new script for Synecdoche, New York is the best of them all.

Points. My list looks a lot like this. Except my top-two are the Godfathers. And I think I remove Fargo, but replace it with "Schindler's List." And definitely add "Silence of the Lambs" (one of my all time favorites, for sure). I really like Deer Hunter, too.Wang
