too many tough games on the schedule -- texas, iowa, penn st, michigan, wisconsin (2 decades of Wisc playing OSU tough)might be a bit much to expect them in the championship game, but stranger things have happened.defense has holes from what i seen. not as strong as last years team that had AJ Hawk, Rob Carpenter, Schlegel, Whitner, Salley, and several others, Plus the O-line lost Mangold and Sims.troy smith is a heisman candidate but i would take Quinn Brady over him. He put up some good numbers last year, in fact I believe he had the highest QB rating in the big ten. Our best chance to avoid the 2 or 3 defeat season (as mentioned below) is for troy to have a heisman caliber season and for the defense to mature fast.

Going to lose at least 2 games??? hahahaha B.S. I would like you to tell me who those two teams are going to be and how they are going to stop us and our plethora of weapons on offense. Our offense is so polished there is no good defense to throw at us. Zone.....we pick them apart short yardage at a time then hit em deep on the outside with one of our two 4.2 40 guys in Ginn or Gonzalez. Not to mention our 3 stud Rb's that would all be number 1's in any major D1 program. OUr D simply reloaded, but to be quite honest we're not going to need much from them considering our O consistently puts up 30 plus a game.

Defense wins championships, not offense. And they play one of the 5 hardest schedules in the country on a regular basis.
One of the oldest, most over used sayings ever.Defense USED to win championships, that's not true anymore. Last year OSU had probobly the best defense in the nation.... See how far that got em?The OSU offense is sooo good and so strong at RB they will literally be scoring at will, even on defenses like Texas.I'm not saying they are going to go undefeated, but to say they absolutely will lose 2 games is ridiculous. Few people doubted USC last year, and their defense was terrible. What's the different between them and OSU this year?

If people REALLY REALLY REALLY think that Texas was actually the #2 team in the nation and that OSU is now going to run the table..you are insane. Auburn and USC are a lot better than them..and probably a lot more teams as well. Just because a team is ranked #2 by some writers in the preseason..that doesn't mean sh*t. Texas could end up with 5 losses and unranked at the end of the season...I think they could lose at Iowa, Michigan could beat them, they play at Michigan St. (not saying the Spartans are great..just saying it's a conference road game that could be tough), and their bowl game could be a loss. Yeah, good win..but OSU is FAR from some dominant team that is going to run the table. We'll see what happens. USC was supposed to be some other-worldly, can't lose, better than every other team combined team.....and they lose a game and almost got beat by Fresno St. at home as well. Wait and see.

Auburn, LSU, USC, and probably 5 other teams are all better than Texas. OSU plays a tough schedule, eventually someone is going to exploit the new players on the defensive side of the ball. Michigan, Iowa, MSU are all potential losses and whatever bowl game they get into will probably be agaisnt someone better than Texas. Don't get too excited unless they get up to a 8-0 mark or so.

Man, college football fans must be in for a treat this year if there are that many teams better than the #1 team in the nation with an explosive offense containing 2 heisman hopefuls. But, then again, I guess we lack depth considering we only aim to play 57 different players by the end of the first quarter and don't lose a step to the "SUPPOSED" #2 team in the nation. USC and Auburn must be doing something I'm not seeing.

From Stewart Mandel's mailbag on si.com....I laughed...http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writ...lbag/index.htmlDon't you think it gets a little old that every time Ohio State wins a big game, its students feel obliged to set the town on fire? I am concerned that my future employees from Ohio State will turn to violence when I ask them to rewash the sinks at their minimum-wage job.-- Stu, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.In the past, whenever Ohio State had one of its infamous postgame vandalism sprees, the university always blamed it on the infamous band of lawless hooligans who have no affiliation with the school but come to town for the parties. But both the 2002 post-Michigan mayhem (48 arrests) and Saturday night's shenanigans took place in a predominately student-occupied neighborhood, and the bozo who drove his car into three pedestrians was identified as an OSU student. So, in the spirit of Stu's e-mail, let this be a message to the students not only at Ohio State but also at West Virginia, where setting couches on fire is considered a big night, and to all other student bodies at football-playing institutions when I say: LIGHTING THINGS ON FIRE STOPPED BEING COOL IN THE SEVENTH GRADE. All you're doing is reinforcing the negative stereotypes the rest of the country already has about your schools and your hometowns. So why do it? I can think of any number of fun, alternative ways to celebrate a big win that won't turn you into the butt of national jokes. Obviously, I would never encourage underage drinking, but there's nothing wrong with blaring the fight song out your window, going out for some pizza and soda or, of course, nudity.

It's dumb to even have rankings before then end of September. They are all just speculation and hype until the teams are about 5 games deep and have a body of work.

They may not be dominant but there is no question they belong in the top 4. They're a good solid team and getting better every week. They took care of Texas and now Iowa as away games. Nothing should stop them till Michigan. And they'll probably be favored by 4 to 5 pts for that one. It's 50/50 them playing for the national title.

I'm still not sold on their defense. I think they are #1 in the country though, not sure how they are going to handle an explosive offense like Michigans. They haven't faced anything even close to it, and won't the rest of the year.Texas was overrated when they played, it's clear that they are not the same without Vince and a few of the defensive starters they lost to the draft. They are a top 20 team, but #2, not even close.Penn St played them really close, and the only reason the score was a far apart as the final ended up being is because the two later interception returns for touchdowns. If Penn St had an experienced QB, they stand a good chance of losing that game. Penn St isn't even a top 25 team right now.Iowa made some mental mistakes on offense, and just had a overall bad night. They exposed places where the OSU defense can be beaten though as shown on the drive where they ran it down OSU's throats and never faced a 3rd down. Considering how inexperienced Iowa's receiving core is, thats a scary thought for OSU when they play a vetern team.MSU could cause them problems, but right now since ND made that huge comback on them they are falling apart so I wouldnt be to worried about them.Mich/OSU, two top 5 teams at the end of the year. I can't wait.

First off, let me preface this by saying I am a huge Buckeye fan.The defense isn't as good as last year, but they are definitely more opportunistic. They have 10 INTs after last night's game, compared to 6 that last year's team had all season. I believe that this quality makes up for some of the holes you see in their defense. And I totally agree with Jadaki, OSU/Mich. at the Shoe this year is going to be great.

i love this place.... ohio state might have a young defense, but they are getting better each week. as long as the defense holds teams a few times the offense will do there job.... usc plays a horrid schedule to even argue they need to be in the top 5 in the nation. that conference sucks *** and even though usc is down they will run the table in a bad conference... michigan should run the table till ohio state and i think this will be for the national championship.. the first playoff ever..... whoever wins that game wins the national championship....
