Been reading some articles that have said the Main Event this year has up to 500 alternates for each day 1. What does this mean?

when some is eliminated, an alternate gets in and sits in their seat.

So basically its a way of allowing 2500 people per day 1 even though they only have room for 2000.Is coming in as an alternate viewed as an advantage or a disadvantage? I can see both, on one end you might be a short stack and on the other end you weren't even at risk while people were getting knocked out.

exactly. Im not sure if its an advantage or disadvatange. I guess it all depends on the cards you do/dont catch.

if you're the last alternate in (out of 500 all getting in) you would sit down with $10,000 in chips when the average would be $12,500. 25% difference for sure, but with blinds still so low, I don't think it would make that much difference in your decision making.

when you come in as an alternate you don't sit with a full starting stack, at least in the few bigger tournaments i've played that is how it worked.

Just to be clear, you are saying you come in with less chips if you're an alternate? That sounds pretty crappy to me, if that is the case.I appreciate the comments thus far but is there anyone who knows for sure how it is working at the Main Event this year?
