Forum unusually crappy today…. New Poker Topic for real discussion. Not sure why, but the forum sucks today, maybe has a lot to do with Rising Shark being responsible for 80% of the threads and posts… maybe because it's Wednesday… who knows… but could I have your thoughts on the following?I have found my game has plateaud recently. I went through the discovery phase, played a bit and lossed, then went through the initial learning the deeper elements of the game (pot odds etc) then stayed there for a while playing, house games and small casino games… then I read a bunch more and really felt I had another growth spurt and deeper understanding of more of the game. now I play fairly successfully online and live, and I'm really enjoying playing smaller MTT tournaments $30 average… and I just had my first win (Yahoo!)… but I've found in the last 2 months I've stopped learning, I know there's always room to improve in the game that's what I love about it, but do any of you have any ideas on things to do to continue learning the game? Last week I went and played 2/4 and raised the whole way through all night and found out it was really informative and I learned a lot about categories of players etc… (I'd recommend it to any of you who are more confident players.) and later on in the week I played 2/4 blind to the river, the problem with that was that people just didn't know what they were doing so it was tough… I'd imagine it would be much more informative to play NL or a higher limit blind cause then the decisions you put people to would be more difficult… but I'm not ready to part with that much money yet. Finally I've been spending time learning the other games as there are new elements of reading etc to be learned in each that are helping my game… So that's where I'm at… please give me any suggestions on new ways to learn the game… basically the only plan I can think of is moving to vegas and watching the greats or something…

Well, offhand, you're learning that winning at poker is never easy.Everyone plateaus at points, the goal is not to crash and damage your bankroll severely.I'm on a huge plateau lately, haven't done much in two weeks, and having trouble even making the money BUT my bankroll is still fine.
Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

To clarify, I'm still winning, I meant my learning of the game has plateaud... but thanks.

Have you branched out into different games? O8, Stud, etc.? If not, doing so may satisfy your thirst for poker knowledge.

move up in limit, get your a$$ kicked, and be forced to learn more stuff.Have you mastered "hidden outs" yet??? Pretty deep concept, I understand the abstract idea of it but it's not something that I incorporate into my game just yet. What about learning a new game? Omaha, Stud, whatever...Or maybe you are just satisfied with the $ you earn at the level at which you play?

gadjet, sounds like your starting to try to nutbar. I think it would work better at 4-8 and 5-10(granted ou might not have the roll for those to nutbar), also what JFarrell said move up a limit, and even make it a little uncomfortable like having only 200BBs for it or 150BB(this is with the knowledge that you very well may move back down). Or take 60BBs for a much higher limit and play there for a night. Try playing some other games for a while. When I'm in a LHE rut I switch to stud(granted stud is probably my best game) or Omaha 8 o/b. It'll get your mind off of your rut and get you thinking in a different way then normal, which is good. Try it out

what we are experiencing is forum growth. The first stage was the 'everyone is new, lets not offend anyone' stage. then came the 'character definition' stage, where certain posters rose to prominence. Next was the 'flame wars'. That is still in the dying stages, but we've now moved on to the introduction of 'trolls'. These posters (risingshark, jacknoy, all the smashar00/o0/0o guys) are just making senseless posts to get a reaction from everyone. soon everyone will start ignoring them and they'll either get more creative or they'll go away. There are some exceptionally talented trolls on RGP. As for the plateau thing, read read read. Keep digesting different viewpoints on the game. Go watch a 100-200 game online and try to guess what players are holding. Play a new game, and see how well you can apply general poker theory to it.

Thanks, this is great advice, I have focused more on learning new games as I said in the original post, and it has helped. I guess the new games are the best tool for right now. I've played all the limits in my area at least once… except 50-100 but that's only offered at most once a week in my city. Farrell, I'm not familiar with the concept of "hidden outs" can you elaborate? I've never heard the term.

Regarding blazes theory on watching a higher limit game. I have about 20 online pro's on my ultimatebuddy list and always have one high roller room open, ussually the highest limit they have up at the time. This is an extremely good idea and it helps your game a lot to be honest.Just a good peice of advice I figured I'd second.

The best thing is to play other forms...when I flatilined in hold em, omaha gave me new perspectives...when that got old, stud...When I play new games, i look for more material (books, articles, forums) and I never feel like im running in one place.

it has to do with ways to win the hand other than the outs you are drawing to. i.e. if you have K10 :D and the board comes down J65, 2 spades, you are going to pay to draw for the flush. but, a lot of people dont count up the 3 kings they could hit, or the running straight draw when they calculate their outs. these outs are 'hidden'.
