If you are going to make a joke, you better make sure people can understand it. Tone of voice does not seep through in text, and sarcasm doesnt fair very well either. quote from another flame war going on in another thread.there is usually some sort of contextual evidence that i suspect you may be missing in many cases.i don't see how a forum of poker players cant use the information available them to sense a bit of sarcasm.... we need to impliment a forum note taking feature... just like a poker site has. you all probably mark every LAG and rock that you run into on the tables... why shouldnt you be able to take notes on your fellow members.i've had complaints that my posts are inflamatory, ill spirited, and useless..... but i'm having FUN. there is no need to be stuck up about an online forum guys.i suggest you all open a notepad document...i'll give you some notes on myself and a few other regular posters..jayistheman- he doesnt mean anything he says... unless its a poker advice topic. his anecdotes are all rooted in fact. don't take him seriously, and try to enjoy his posts... he wants you tojustblaze- he is quick witted and has a sharp tone. it seems like he's disgusted all the time, but he's not. his poker advice is spot on.smasharoo- you all know about himwrto- solid advice. good sense of humorkdawgcometh- quality human being. excellent poker advice, and a good sense of humor... always good for an enjoyable conversation.................................................the list goes on forever....i suggest y'all start taking some notes (mine are all mental, but some like to write down) on your fellow members so you can at least have the proper information at hand to interpret their posts properly.... i think you will be pleasantly suprised that they aren't flaming you... just having a good time.p.s. if ya wanna hear the "notes" i have on you, just ask.

this is the best idea ive heard in a long time. On RGP we tried doing notation for inflection (like if you were being sarcastic you were supposed to put [SW] for sarcasm warning before the comment) but it kinda ruined the humour of most things. This plan is way better.

I'll be the sucker Jay, lay your notes on me! I can take the heat!Note: I think this is a good idea. I for the most part don't particularly "like" people, I just have a few people that I don't really enjoy.

Awesome quote Allin... " Drop the Hammer!!" Days of Thunder! Ah, i haven't watched that movie in a long time, then again i thought the quote was "Don't drop the hammer" so maybe that's not even quoting the movie. This has nothing to do with the thread but i couldn't resist after I noticed it on your post.

allinbluff35- most sarcastic entity on the face of this planet. but sometimes makes an odd transition from sarcasm to true anger... can be hard to detect. good overall sense of humor, and popularized (rightly so) the use of the word "clown"

I just noticed allin hails from hll. That's very odd, do you know Jim Bournone? Old friend of mine, I think he moved to hll if I'm not mistaken. Say Hi to him for me if you know him.

It's a shame you would even need to suggest this. Who cares what people think of you or your posts. Even if they are inflamatory, ill spirited, and useless. If you are having fun and you believe what you say, it doesn't matter. (See http://en.wikipedia....edom_of_speech)

BigMoney74: Thinks he is the Godfather. Posts only once in a blue moon, but when he does it is always constructive and cheerful. Gained much respect for coining the term "it's a shame" followed by the actions of an FCP member. :-)

digitalmonkey- good sense of humor, and creative... dont get into an argument with him, as he likes to cut his enemies up using big words and lots of evidence... doesnt take well to criticism of his light-hearted threads.

I think the solution is to have trusted eyes watching the board and PMing individuals with warnings and eventual suspensions if they continue to heat things up. This requires some not insiginifcant admin work. Some people are not following the spirit of the board, or are easily drawn to these petty fights, so moderation is going to take place -- the way to do it is to have a common "workhorse" admin account that is IP tracked, and open up moderation to a staff that monitor the boards at all hours.Often threads can be locked or even deleted - this is what is going on now. This is actually a bit more drastic than needed I think. Sometimes people get very upset about that (without merit though!). A PM and sometimes a temporary suspension until the user responds back to the admin is the quickest and least intrusive. Also, "deleted" threads should be instead moved to a private forum where only the admins can see it.Before all this is done a very clear moderation policy needs to be set out. Daniel has done a good job of saying what is cool and what isn't... it just needs a few examples listed in the new user agreement and sticky announcements. And ultimately, you want to have the community self-police for the sake of the forum. This being said, a little flaming every now and then isn't bad and can lead to some very funny/interesting threads. It also highlights factions more easily than a high school dance.

Oh also, I think the job being done right now is quite adequate. But, I think the goal should be to not involve Daniel or let him get annoyed. I've known others people with boards who just said "screw it" after a while due to the time/emotional investment.

the regulation of the forum is far too prolific as of now. i dont think this should be a sterile environment... i'm already in one 8 hours a day.i understand that DN wants things this way... and that JW is just doing his job. i am just trying to understand why people don't understand a little bit of light hearted needling..... if it leads to some of the better members here getting harassed, or even banned, its a very sad thing.when i got back to classes in a week or two, i will probably post much less... as i wont be on a computer all day.... so anyone who is offended by me, there ya go.
