I was at my weekly hold'em game with my friends. We've been playing for maybe 20 mins. I'm on the big blind and I'm dealt K 9 offsuit. 5 players limp in and I check preflop. Blinds are at 25/50Flop comes:2 8 9 rainbowSmall blind checks and I bet 300... around the size of the pot. I want to win this pot now with my top pair. Everyone folds except for one player. Turn comes:9I bet 300 once again. I figured if I slowed down then my hand would be obvious. I get raised, I fear an ace kicker but I rereaise all in. He calls and we turn over. He shows pocket 8'sRiver comes:QDid I play this wrong?

Sets happen. He could easily have had T9s and you would have raked a monster pot.

what wrto said.but other than that, i don't like pot-sized bets at all with hands like TPTK. not only are they vulnerable, but with such an aggressive bet, you'll only get called when you're beat, and you won't get paid off when you're not.i tend to make between 1/2 to 2/3-pot size bets on almost any holding i have (TPTK, middle set, bluffing, bottom two, etc.) so that i disguise my hand and also get nice results (i get good value with good hands, and also give aggressive enough betting to push people off hands when i'm weak or bluffing). i almost NEVER make pot-sized bets, only pot-sized raises when i'm trapping.that said, the stack sizes in your game make a big difference. it seems like you were playing shallow stacks, somewhere between 20-40 big blinds, so you have no room to see where you're at. if the stacks were deeper, between 100-200 big blinds, you could have re-raised on the turn or simply called, etc., but with such shallow stacks, a push was the correct move, and unfortunately, luck then plays a bigger factor in who has the better hand.aseem

It's hard to put him on a Snowmen in that situation. As wrto said, he could have easily had T9 or something similar. Play it the same everytime and you take it down on the flop with the $300.00 bet, unles they hold J 10 or 6 7 for an open ended draw. In which case you take it on the turn. Well played. BTW was this a tourney or live game? If it was a NL tourney I would move in on the flop. That's just me though. I think you played it as well as you could have
