no cause if SB wakes up with a big hand, your dead. If you just call, all the others have at max 400 more, so youll call that. but if SB pushes, you can get away

I find I do best when I'm a "first-in junkie". In this case, your M is still roughly around 10 (I don't know the ante). No need to rush it. Honestly, I'm not sure what I'd do here. I figure I'm flipping coins. Sometimes I think that's a good deal, and other times I think it sucks.

If this was the final table, I probably play - with a call. No need to give the SB, an opportunity to break me. If it's earlier in a tourney, I probably throw it away.

I call here, no reason to commit your whole stack w/ 88 when someone behind could wake up w/ a big hand, and then you're scrizewwwed.

If you raise, SB is only pushing with hands that are way ahead of you. Maybe AK, but why would you want to race at this point when you are the 3rd best stack at the table and have a decent M. There is a good chance you are flipping anyway. Just CALL.

I S O L A T E. SB wakes up with a hand big enough to call that then GG me. UTG range with an M of about 3.5 could be just about anything. I push any face card in his spot. Calling here just invites the small blind to come over the top and do what you should have done....isolate. SB would have to have a huge hand to call your over the top and would have much less to come over the top of you if you just call.

I agree.

If you call, SB may come along for the ride as well. Then you are potentially up against 4 over cards, not a good spot. Or as Rdog says, SB is likely to reraise all in to push you out. If I am sb with something like KJ I would certainly like my spot getting 3-1 against a shortstack's pushing range. A call invites the SB to push with a wide range.

I might get some flack for this response, but here goes. Personally, I would rather be doing the pushing with 88 rather than calling/reraising in this situation. How have you been collecting your chips? Stealing? Hitting flops? Outplaying opponents? I just don't really like the idea of risking 1/4 of my stack to possibly even my whole stack with 88 considering the SB could wake up with a big hand or maybe not. And no, I don't play scared poker, but I'd rather be the one doing the pushing in a situation like this, I'd rather try to protect my stack here in this situation, that's just me.

But if you are going to decide to call then I think you would need to push here because you don't want the SB in this pot who could basically take the pot away from you and you've just invested over 4000 chips for nothing because some overcards hit.

I change my answer to this. I really really really really really think that someone in the SB would have to have a pretty small range of hands to risk a lot of chips against an all-in reraiser, with a decent stack.

Just smooth calling w/ 88 is the safer route, and allows you to fold to a reraise, but why allow someone to make you fold your hand? Even if a hand behind you beats you, that's poker. Who knows, someone behind could be making a move w/ AJ-AK, 22-77 to isolate...

Basically, I think that the only hands calling your isolation push here SHOULD be QQ-AA, AK... perhaps 10 10 and JJ.

Yep, 4 hands. I think that is the range for him to call your push.

I agree that this is a good spot to islolate, but this is a $5 tournament so with no read I would say SB's range is JJ+, AQ+, maybe much less if you've got some maniac with a lucky stack.
