I'm sure you all remember this hand, and I remember it being ridiculed on Tv/and by me and my friends in real life as just a bad play on Juanda's part. With a good sized pot out there, Daniel is on like an 8-9H flush draw with two hearts on board, and Juanda has AQ, top pair, good kicker. One card to come.John goes all-in right before the 5th card is dealt (even saying stop! to make the bet) and it comes a rag - no flush hits. Daniel folds, Juanda wins, everyone acts amazed.I remember thinking ... 'what the hell?' about this hand, but after catching it on TV this morning a poker revelation came to me.I don't want to give it away just yet, because I'd like to see if everyone already knows this and that i am a small-minded person who just had a poker epiphany. thoughts?
juanda's all-in bet before the river (wsop) on daniel

Well, yes I know the hand, I saw it recently myself... but as for the epiphany, I'm not sure what it was, so fill us in.

this might just be standard knowledge, but i dont know. i was like 'oh' when i thought about it though.i just assume these guys have an idea of what they are on, with no raise preflop.. juanda probably knew daniel was after the flush (maybe even with the suited connectors he had) and daniel likely knew Juanda had him beat. Going all-in before the river may have been Juanda trying to protect his hand, even if daniel hit his flush.Given that they both had an idea of where they other was, JJ was telling Daniel that hey, i have the nuts even if the flush hits.. so if it does, maybe it sends daniel in the tank and even produces a fold. (there were only three left, JJ, Daniel and Drehobl at the time)So when daniel says "he showed the queen of clubs, haha, what a sicko" it may be because he recognized JJ's play (representing the nut flush) and that it was a semi-bluff..Plus, maybe they're friends and just want to go easy on eachother until Drehobl goes out

I dont recall Daniel having the flush draw, I believe the comentators said it was a bad bet because of the chance Daniel may have been on a flush draw. I mean im not sure but I thought i was pretty sure.Johnny Boy

Daniel had a pair of 9s and a flush draw, so he woulda had the better hand if a 9 8 or his flush hit, so he had lots of ways to improve, would he have called with a 2nd pair or trips? I don't know, he probably woulda thought about it if he hit, would he have called with a flush? most likely, I'm not sure, he woulda thought about it if it hit
